Actually, I have not been listening to Anuradha's songs very carefully. But recently I did listen to her number in the Hindi film "Taal" with Sujatha.
Looking at her methodical approach to the Hindi accents and pronounciation while singing,I feel she may be another south Indian to strike and conquer the Bolywood musical scene with a big bang.
We should be thankful to ARR for getting the south Indian singers elevated to a nationwide image

Anuradha Sriram is probably the most talented&knowledgable female playback singers and definitely the most versatile. Her singing may not be in the Sujatha Chitra class but that is because her voice is not that melodious esp: in the higher registers. But have you heard Manvaasanai from her album Chennai Girl.Mindblowing stuff.Showcases her compositional skills too. Also remember she is the only singer who came up on her own steam with no back up from A.R.R.

Mr.Genuine musician,
I just looked at your comment that Anuradha Sreeram is the only singer on her own stream (what you mentioned as 'steam', I presume, is a spelling error and should have been 'Stream')with no back up from ARR. Chithra and Sujatha were very famous even before they started singing for ARR.ARR is a great music director and would have given chances to many famous and new singers, but it does not mean that he was the person instrumental for bringing up all other artistes other than Anuradha. There are many other music directors who introduced many singers who became very famous
in the subsequent days.
Also please remember, the reason for rise of a singer should not be fully attributed to the music director alone. The singer's talent and proficiency are the most important and because of that only they achieve the success primarily . The music director acts as a catalyst and/or as an accelarator in this whole process, that is all.

Anooradha Sriram mentioned in the Atlantic City show in July, 1999 that her first movie song was the part in 'ini achcham achcham illai....' from Indira (by ARR). Later she followed that with anbendra mazhaiyilE (minsaara kanavu - ARR). Her first 'hit' was nalam nalamariya aaval by Deva for kaadhal kOttai which was around the same time.

rajaG,
"Kaadhal Kottai" was released around a year before "Minsaara Kanavu", I guess.

She has sung an excellent North Indian folk/classical number in her 'Family Album' : Three Brothers & A Violin. This is the only solo female number and is excellent for its changes in rhythmic patterns and also in the surprising scale-shift at the end.
The album however was poorly marketed (rather not marketed at all) by Magnasound though it had a fresh sound and was very original. (well, I guess that's the reason);)
The song I mentioned above goes like this: 'Barkha Ritu Ber Hamaar'

Watz up PPL??
Anuradha Sreeram is a great singer and is even better LIVE!! Do you know how much energy she brings to a concert?? I have seen Sujatha and Chitra at concert, they don't bring any energy to it really. They stand still, smile (sometimes) and keep singing. But AS, WOW!! She dances, makes jokes .. she's just great. If you don't know what I'm talking about. Go to my webpage and download two vdo's of her concerts. One she is singing a song w/ hariharan which is great. "Un odathoda sivvapaen..." and the other song is with the MD Deva singing the song "Kanakathe" from the movie Adimai Changli. My website is located at http://members.nbci.com/Theva/ and you have to choose the Videos section. I hoped ARR would bring AS to his concert here in Toronto. But he didn't. That's OK. Next time I guess. :-)

This is to the person who was praising Anuradha
for her hindi accent..
Well, I guess you haven't the very first line
of the Taal song. She got 'Jeena' wrong.
She was pronouncing it as 'zeena'.. pretty basic, IMHO

I would say, Anuradha Sriram is one gifted, beautiful and talented singer. I simply admire her voice and the songs she sang. Recently she was in Malaysia for a concert with Shanker Mahadevan. Her performance was superb. She was so energetic all the time. I didn't want the show to end, it was that good. Shanker was good too but the crowd cheered for Anu more, eventhough there were a number of them who were unhappy with her for not speaking in Tamil. Everyone cheered when she sang "Kanangatha" and when she also danced for "Karuputhan".When she sang "Nilavai Konduva", the crowd was really amazed. But we enjoyed all the songs. Well it was the first time I went for a concert, and I'm glad that I went for a superb one. I hope Anuradha Sriram will perform in Malaysia again. We Malaysians want her to.

Frankly put, the way a person behaves on stage is in direct context to his/her character. Most male singers other than KJY are known to be easy going and rather jolly. But I believe the disposition of singers like Sujatha, Chithra, and Harini is different. Even ARR can't get over his shyness on stage, even though he looks to be enjoying the masti numbers if he doesn't have to look at the audience. They seem to be rather shy and introverted, at least on stage. That is not the case with Anuradha. She is extremely outgoing and very active on stage, as she herself has mentioned. At the present time, I think that youngsters like dance numbers so they want the singers on the stage to vibe with the audience. This was not always the case. But personally, I would feel rather wierd if I had to see Sujatha, Chithra, S. Janaki, Vani Jayaram , Harini, Bavatharini giving a stage performance like that of Anuradha or Anupama. Not because that is wierd in the actual sense, but because I have come to know there disposition and it would seem very fake.
But of course, I do think that Anuradha is wonderful on stage. Even Shankar Mahadevan is good without going overboard with things. But Hariharan can get to be a little too full at times. SPB is a wonder. KJY is a rock on stage:-)). Please don't be offended, it's the truth.

I heard that Anooradha Sriram (that's how she spells it these days) studied at the Berkley College of Music. This is where she met her husband Sriram Parasuram. Sriram is a graduate from IIM Calcutta and gives concerts in Hindustani music. Sometime last year, Anooradha accompanied her husband in a jugalbandi and was 'kizhichufied' by the critics who felt that she hadn't done enough 'saadagam' for her concert.
Many may not know that Anooradha is an excellent long-distance runner and I remember her from a 5-km charity run a couple of years ago. She went on to arrive first at the finish line and she did it pretty effortlessly. I believe she has a small daughter.

wrt Aruvi's comment about KJY, KJY is a great and gifted singer, but as Aruvi pointed out, he is too serious on the stage. It is very difficult to see a smile on his face when he performs in a stage.
Few years back , I watched a program in Muscat where KJY and KSC performed.KJY was singing only his songs, although the audience wanted some duet songs which other male singers have sung with KSC.
But KJY sang number of duets with Chithra on the stage on that day- many of his old songs which he sang in sixtees and seventees with PS,SJ, P.Leela etc
I feel that the singers should not put a restriction that they will sing their songs only when they perform in a stage. Well,it appears this is generally a trend seen among male the singers. If their counter part female singers stick on to a similar trend, the songs that can be sung in stage performance will be very very limited.
Well , I am not trying to generalise male singers with this trend-may be I am wrong about my observation. I have definitely seen singers like Mano, Unnimenon etc singing songs of other male singers while performing in a stage.

A correction in last but one para, it should be
" among the male singers" and not "among male the singers" Sorry for the inadvertent error.
