Osho, i think i talked abt. IR's sound quality......it is really pathetic.......0/10.......he has improved with pithamagan and virumaandi but still a long way to go b4 reachin ARR's perfection......
CMU, u r a really patient man.....thnx for answering me........we all loved IR only till 1992....now i do love IR but not more than ARR......i wunt agree to the point that International,National recognition doesent carry weight.....it does...especially if ur outside of TN u know how important is recognition....anyways comparison is going to lead us nowhere.....so better enjoy these gr8s music than comparing them.... even i need to stop this unnecessary comparison....

// I'm not sure about what you mean by Recording quality. What aspect are you talking about?. Is it the mixing or just the amplification of the sound. //
Osho - i think ppl are talking about the mixing here ...i am not sure what you mean by amplification...

Recording is recording, mixing is blending different tracks together with different levels of volume and reverb (an effect which adds a sense of space, so that an instrument sounds close to you or farther away). This is the simplest explanation I can think of. IRs mixes are perfect, ie. each instrument is played at the perfect relative volume and stays right where it should be in terms of space. But not many people like his mixes, because, the voice is in the foreground and all the instruments including the percussion is behind it. This is mainly a matter of style. When it comes to recording the instruments, many times, it does not sound great. There seems to be some haze/veil around the instruments. This I think is mainly because IR records all instruments at the same time playing together. This is quite a bit of challenge in recording. People like ARR or YSR record each instruments in isolation and then mix them together. Also, many times their percussion is mainly a drum machine and not real drums (which are difficult to record).
Quite a good number of recordings of IR sound really great - for eg. the chembaruthi/singaravElan/marupadiyum sounds the best. Also, geethanjali, ninaivellAm nithya sound fantastic (but in n.nithya you can hear the sound clipping).
So even if IR recorded very well, some people may not like it because of the style and misunderstand it to be a bad recording. But when amplified in a high-resolution system, IRs recordings (when good) sound like you have the instruments playing in your room (probably because they have been minimally processed .i.e not played around with any effects/equalization etc and so the signal is pure).

k, thats a terrific explanation. This is what i wanted to convey. I know some of my friends who have watched live ARR recording. There would be only one guitar player along with ARR at times. (May be to play guitar parts!!) and then he would mix every thing at a leisurely pace. He has the cushion, to tweak any part of a song he wants. THats probably why his songs sound great on hearing in a good hi-fi.
k, the guitar sounds in Marupadiym is a treat to ones' ear.
Thops, at some times, people complain that the cd has low volume output comparing to other cd's and at once claim that the recording is poor. I just wanted to get that clarified.

i am guessing IR also does his songs in parts these days...he did mention that it takes much longer to complete a song these days - more than a month sometimes...
in any case i think the voices are done separately from the instruments and mixed in the final mastering...again i don't think IR oversees this final step for all his recent movies...i am saying this because he (IR) was actually cribbing about the level of the vocals wrt to the instruments in one of his own songs (from Time)...
anyway all this too much digression from the thread's topic...

Whoever posting in the nick of 'magix' here in this thread...pls stop using that nick for posting such messages. get some other nick to post these kind of serious music-related posts (even if it is the real 'magix'). This sounds like grossly insulting that 'magix' nick.

IR is using music as service, so low salary but Rahman is using music to make money in crores.
he dont deserve it.
see he made new vandhemataram, is it nice?
its not fashion man to change, see if fashion changes in india will you allow your sisters to wear bikini?
certain things must retain culture.

Rahman has spoiled our culture.

ramki:
" IR is using music as service, so low salary but Rahman is using music to make money in crores. "
The difference in salary is due to quality in output. If you need performance you must be ready to pay. Or else go for a cheap alternative.
"see he made new vandhemataram, is it nice? "
Isn't it nice? Did ARR mix rap or rock or metal in vandematharam? It was sweet melody which preserved the tranquility of the song. It was his tribute to the nation's 50th year of independence.
"its not fashion man to change, see if fashion changes in india will you allow your sisters to wear bikini?"
Certainly NOT. But atleast they should wear churidhars rather than following the age old dressing patterns.
"certain things must retain culture. "
Yes. But certain things must change or rather evolve. Music is just one of them.
"better know who is doing what ok? "
You better think of it.
"Rahman has spoiled our culture."
I pity you.
