Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.

bb,
Though my 'vaaaaaaaaram' suggestion was turned down, I wholeheartedly enjoyed the strong 'nakkal' in 'muLLangi vaaaaaaaaram'!!!!!
Seriously, if not vaaaarams, at least, Ninaivaanjali days you can observe!

Fantastic selection bb. This would probably rank in my top 10 if not top 5 of SPB solos. I am not a great fan of the long preludes and interludes of this song as much as the others(the recording is also not that great), but the tune is incredible and SPB's version is better than Lata's IMO. I am pretty sure for those who were in their teens probably in the late 70s this song would definitely evoke a strong sense of nostalgia when they listen to it now.
The tabla work in this song is also noteworthy.

bb- you are right. It is the title song. AK, as you know was Balumahendra's adaptation of some English film (Summer of '42?)- Its about three adolescent boys in a village, and the crush they develop for their new teacher called Indhu (played by Shobha). One of the boys is totally infatuated with her, and is bitterly diasappointed when he comes to know that Indhu already has a lover- Pratap Pothen.
If I remember right, the film begins with Kamal (guest appearance, one of the boys now grown up, and an officer in the city), gets the news that Indhu teacher is no more, and he sits back, thinking of that summer, many years back--and as he goes back in time, this song is heard, and the titles are shown.
All the lyrics were by GA. The other songs were the lovely 'Poo vannam'-JC-PS and the naughty 'Kidacha unakku sugam'-SJ (in the same lines of Salilda's 'Thakazhi')

Azhiyadha Kolangal is a testimony to how SC adapts a tune to the particular region. Take Poo Vannam, Poley Nenja. In Bengali it is made to sound very Bengali, in Malayalam by KJY you think SC's songs are totally malayalee sounding and in Tamil that song sounds so very Tamil. Just take a look at the other one too. Kidacha Unakku... here it in Mal as Kadhali, it is so mallu there!

Song of the Day: nee pournami from oruvar vaazhum aalayam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/nEE_pournami.rm
- MD: IR. Sung by KJY.
- In Classical Ilayaraja article series, Lakshminarayanan writes:
His next Simhendra Madhyamam came in oruvar vaazhum aalayam. The song is
nee pournami. He starts this song in middle octave Ri2! The song goes like
this: Ri2 Ga2 Ri2 Ga2 Sa (nee..) Ga2 Ma2 Pa Ma2 Pa (pournami). The swara
structuring of this song is just marvellous. He uses groups of swaras up
and down like a thrilling roller-coaster ride, and later in the end of the
song he starts presenting alternating swaram-sahityam sequences that are just
wonderful!

bb- great choice, as usual!
OVA-1988 had a wonderful score by IR. All the songs were excellent- 'Pallaviye saranam'-SPB-SJ, 'Uyire uyire urugaathe'-KJY-SJ, 'Singara pennoruthi'-Mano and 'Malayoram mayile'-MV-KSC were the other songs.
The film starred Sivakumar,Ambika (guest role), Prabhu, Rahman, Radhu (Nighalgal's Rohini), G Srinivasan and Senthil. All the lyrics were by Ponnadiyaan and the film was written and directed by Shanmugapriyan.

rajaG :
Enjoyed your write-up on Salilda's gems. To just correct one unfortunate 'commission' - One other song from ANAND has a Bangla Orginal - The Mukesh solo "Kahin door" was infact a re-do of Hemant Kumar's "Amoy Prosna Kore". The latter version is ,IMO, more rounded and better-rendered

Song of the Day: mazhaiyum neeyE from azhagan.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/mazhaiyum.rm
- A great song by Maragathamani. He did very few films in thamizh, most of them with K.Balachandar. This one is a classic with SPB singing. I think this song won some state award.
- I think one stanza in this song was cut in the film.
- K.B film songs: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/709.22.36.44.html
- Lyrics by Pulamaippiththan (?)
- In http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/20817.9678.2.html , Sriram Lakshman writes:
MM is a genuine SPB favourite. The reason could be his ability to create strong melodies. My favourite of his is "Mazhayum Neeye Veyyilum Neeye" in Azhagan. Unfortunately, only the second stanza was played in the movie. The scope for improvisation the tune with its longish notes in the charanam provided, was fully capitalised upon by SPB. I have the original version with both the stanzas and SPB keeps you guessing all the time with his sangathis.

Its a very good song bb, Thanks for the selection !!!!!
I agree with Sriram Lakshman that MM is a SPB Favourite - I can only add KSC also to that list - almost all his songs with these two masters are classics (in tamil, not sure abt. telugu :-)
yes, Lyrics are by pulamapip piththan ...

Thanks,bb, for another great song.
Yes, all the lyrics were by Pulamaippithan in Azhagan. The lyrics of 'Saathi malli poocharame' are especially wonderful.
I don't know about the song in particular, but Maragadhamani won the TN State Award for Best Music Director in 1991, for his score in 'Azhagan'.

Though other songs in the film like, 'Thathithom', 'Sangeeta SwarangaL' and 'SAthi Malli' were more popular, 'Mazhayum NeeyE' is my favorite. A song tailor-made for SPB. The song has everything: excellent lyrics, very good melody, structure and great rendering!
I especially liked the rhythm.. (misra chapu tALam?) With this album I thought he's going to create a big splash in TFM. But alas, KeeravANi, turned MaragathamaNi turned MM Kreem (Is this progression any indication of his career graph?? :)) hasn't shown much consistency after decent scores in 'vAnamE Ellai' and 'KshaNa kshaNam'. But for an occasional single hit in 'Criminal' and the Hindi 'Zakhm' he hasn't shown any of the brilliance he showcased in the above song.
