Geetha,
My previous posting was perhaps confusing. The neelamani scale I am thinking of comes from Sarasangi and uses the sudha madhyamam. In the nalamthana song I see the use of both ga's and dha 2. That is why I thought this song was not in the neelamani scale. Are we thinking of the scale?
BTW, I am curious to know if you checked up on Sumaneesa Ranjani.

Anon(Govindan) : Yes we're thinking of the same Neelamani, from Sarasangi - I'm not to familiar with that Nalamthaana song, but one of the parts of the Raagamalika (Kafi, Mand, Vasantha, Thilang, Neelamani) 'CHINNAN CHIRU KILIYE' - in fact, the last charanam - UNNKANNIL NEERVALINTHAAL ENNENJIL UTHIRUM KOTTUTHADI UNNKANIL PAAVAI YENDO KANNAMA EN UYIR NINRATHNRO (I'm not to sure of these words).....is in Neelamani. If you listen to it, it sounds like Nalamthaana.
Yes I checked on Sumaneesa Ranjani, the original composition (By Purandaradasar) was not written in Sumaneesa Ranjani, but Rajkumar Bharathi sings it in Sum Ranjani. It sounds a lot like Madhuvanthi....Please refer to your Raga Pravaaham book for this.

Geetha,
Your reference point of chinnan chiru kiliye clears up matters to me. The unkannil charam uses the follwing notes (at least in the Mali version that I am used to) sa ri2 ma1 pa dha1 and occasionally dha 2 (as in en uyir ninnadhandro).
Misra shivranjani uses sa ri2 ga1 pa dha 2 and occasionally ga 2. The former ragam obtains from the latter by using the pa as the tonic note. And I agree they do sound similar in structure. I didn't know that the ragam of un kannil was neelamani. However, if this is derived from sarasangi then it does not ni3 but uses dha 2 as an anya swara.
In the nalamthana song, if you use the scale of the music preceeding the song, then this song is basically in misra shivranjani.

Hi!
Thanks to Mr.Hari Govindan (aka anon in this thread), I have uploaded some songs of IR in my homepage - almost all songs set to ragas rarely used (even in concerts).
Have a listen to them, and feel free to mail me your comments/suggestions.
Regards

Thanks for the rare ragas page, RG.
Hari, is "amuthe thamizhe" rasikapriya? I doubt. the song essentially follows the pentatonic scale
S R1 G3 P D2.
Also I thought "maniye manikkuyile" is Natabairavi and "isayarasi" is Soorya (hindolam but for G3).

Rajaraman,
it was my mistake. The raga is actually rasikaranjani. The error has been corrected. About the other two ragas, I think Hari is the best person to provide the answer, I guess.

Rajaraman,
Re. Isai arasi, we are talking about the same scale. I didn't know that Soorya was another name. I checked a couple of books and got the name
Sallapam (Ramaswamy, I made a mistake in writing the name. I wrote it as Sallabam.)
About maniye, Suddha desi is a janya of natabhairavi that omits ga in the ascent. IMHO, the song is in suddha desi (hindustani:jeevanpuri, allied to jonpuri) only because the song, except in a couple of spots, repeatedly moves from ri to ma. For instance, check out the first interlude:
sa ri ma ga
ri ma dha pa ga..
si ri ma ga ri sa.
And again, in the charanam.
en uyirile oruthi...
ri ma pa dha pa pa pa pa
I think the jump from ri to ma in the ascent is prominent in the song...
I hope Ramaswamy will (some day) load the MSV/Balamurali song from Thai Moogambigai...

Hari,
Of course, I will upload the other 'thai mugambikai' song this weekend. A couple of other ones also, very soon. I will also correct the name of the raga.

haris: Please look at the old bits of this thread, we've already discussed the Ahir Bairavhi/Chakravaham. The Vidukathaya song is in that ragam. IR has a lot of compositions in this ragam.
Pagalavan: Yes indeed, Maanida Sevai is in BILAHARI. Mohanam Avarohanam, Sankarabarnam Avarohanam.
As for Isaiarasi, I thought it was in SALLAPAM too, I didn't know the raga took two names. Thanks for the info.
SAHANA RAGAM
************
The popular song RUKKU RUKKU RUKKU HARE BAABA RUKKU from AVVAI SHANMUGHI (MD is Deva) is also in SAHANA....
I can't think of any other new songs in this ragam, there are however, many old songs in this raga.
