Kanchana:
I was recently reading the book, 'Kannadhasan:
Thirai Isaip PaadalgaLil kaadhal' by Saami
ThirumaavaLavan. There the author mentions that
Kannadhasan got the idea for aththikkaai
from a different song. avar sonna thanippaadal
idhO:
kadalaik kaaytharu maadhuLangkaai
kaamanaar malarch cheerviLangaay
udalaich chErvE langaayOn
oruva vEppangkaayOdu
padalai thandhaay thEngaai nee
payanaar mayila mangkaayaa
nadalaith thOgai nagar vaazhum
naadhan aruLaar nallOnE
But the seyyuL that you mentioned earlier is,
I think, more closer to the aththikkaai kaai
kaai song.

in the thanippaadal that I mentioned above,

Let me start now ........ It just took me 40 Mins!
Equation 1
thAdhi - PanipeN
thoodhu - Message
theedhu - Theemai
thaththum - Hopping
thaththai - give up
sollAdhu - will not tell! (Easy!)
Equation 2
thudhi - tip
thoodhu - Message (Silly to guess)
oththiththadhu - postponement (Wild Guess!)
thoodhu - Message
sellAdhu - will not go! (Cool to guess!)
Equation 3
thEdhi - Date
thiththu - Word not in Tamizh :-)))
thoththu - Defeat
theedhu - Theemai
dheivam - Kadavul (Romba easy Guess!)
varAdhu - Will not come!
Equation 4
indRu - today
thuththi - Not a Tamizh word!
thaththum - Hopping
thaththai - Hop!
vAzha - To Live!
thiththiththa pOdhu - When it was Sweet!
Now I am arriving at the following formula
meanings so far...
panipeN Message Theemai Hopping give up will not tell!
Tip message postponement message will not go!
Date thiththu defeat theemai kadavul will not come!
Today thuththi Hopping Hop to Live when it was sweet!
Kanchana, I hope you got the meaning Clear :-))
Now, I am stumbling and accusing you of coming up
with some meaningless mumbo-jumbo! (Morse Code) :-)))))
Eagerly waiting for the correct explanation!
Thanks in advance!

Can these lines be taken literally or is it
a comparison to the sister! Is so what kind of
comparision is this ?
- From: Udhaya (@ 205.218.142.217)
on: Tue Jun 23 20:56:24 EDT 1998
The song is a lullaby sung by a brother and sister to put to sleep the sister's child. The analogy of the first four lines are directly attributed to the child.

All of us know well the song, thaazhaiyaam poo mudichchu
where the hero, who has a physical defect, has a 'complex' that
he is no good and is an unfit match for his beautiful wife, and
his wife tries to convince him that he is 'great' in other ways.
I recently heard a song of a similar nature in the movie, veLLi
nilavE (yet to be released). RV Udhayakumar (he is an under-rated
lyricist) has written the song; a newcomer named Kiran (seems to be
a bright prospect for TFM) has scored a very pleasing tune; SPB
and Chithra have sung the song beautifully; the orchestration
complements the lyrics very well; lyrics stand out so well that the
song impresses on your mind the first time you hear it. (There are
several other good songs in the same movie: a really good album to
watch for this year.) From the way the tune keeps changing in the
song, I also get the feeling that lyrics were written first and the
tune made later!
Although I have no idea whatsoever about this yet-to-be-released
movie directed by RVUdhayakumar, I can guess, from the lyrics, what
the situation is. kaadhali padiththavaL, budhdhisaali; kaadhalanO
konjam mandhamaanavan (probably uneducated, too). avaL EdhO konjam

Keerthi:
Seems like a simple but meaningful song. The first charaNam's thuNiyinaith thuvaippadhanAl manadhinai veLuppadhanAl reminds me of kandhaiyilE azhukkirundhAl....un sindhaiyilE azhukkirundhAl from the "Aththu veLLam kAththirukku" song in thiruvarutchelvar. The second charaNam's kuRaikudam seems to derive from the pazhamozhi. Nice touches!
Even if it is not one of Udhayakumar's best by his own high lyric-writing standards (I rank him way above the pazhanibharadhis of this world and see him as being quite different from VM), the song does stand out since it has a philosophical touch--a rarity in today's TFM.
