All-Time Great Lyrics in TFM!

Friends,

Shall we discuss about some all time
great Lyrics in TFM by any Lyricist independent
of which Era in TFM!

Lyrics should be peculiar in writing, peculiar
in meaning, different in thinking, it has to be
different from the usual ones. It has to be
Unique in its approach/writing!

I shall give a few examples of some Lyrics
which I feel is very different and unique in its
style of writing, meaning and thinking!

  Bhaskar, here are the two interpretations for the last line of this verse from ponnezhil pooththadhu:
  
  munnam en uLLaththil mukkani sarkkarai
  aLLik koduththa ponmAdam engE
  aLLik koduththa ponmAdam engE
  kiNNam nirambidach chenganich chAruNNa
  munvandha chevvandhi mAlai engE
  
  Obviously, the hero is reminiscing about the good old times and is missing the heroine. One interpretation is the straightforward one, where he is referring to the heroine as chevvandhi mAlai.
  To get the other possible interpretation, split the lines as follows:
  mun vandha chev (v)andhimAlai engE
  "nAngaL iruvarum sErndhu kiNNam nirambidach chenganich chARuNNa andRu vandha chenniRam porundhiya azhagiya mAlaippozhudhu indRu engE pOnadhu?" (metaphorically the same meaning as before--"where are the good old times?")
  Of course, we don't know whether Panchu Arunachalam intended a wordplay here, but either way the entire song is beautiful!

  Again I was pondering over this and also was
  talking to a Friend last night! It looks as
  though the first interpretation is wrong,
  since that becomes a "Double Figurative" line.
  
  I mean Chev andhi mAlai - Andhi and mAlai are
  one and the same. So the lyricist might not have
  thought about to write a double figurative line
  to describe its intensity.
  
  I feel Chev(v)andhi mAlai - as a garland of the
  Chevandhi pookkals is the interpretation that
  the Lyricst might have thought!

  Regarding the athikkai kai kai song there is a small interesting incident.
  
  First this song was written for the tune given by
  MSV(tunekkaaga ezhudha patt paadal idhuvum)
  
  Recording kaalaiyil MSVIyum Kanandhasanum poikondirundhaargal.   I didn't know aththikkAi was written to a preset tune. kaviyarasar being nervous...guess that was a different era altogether. Thanks for sharing the story.

  Re your friend's concern around interpretiing andhi mAlai as evening: it is my understanding that andhi mAlai refers to the end period or andham of the evening daypart or mAlai.
  
  In current usage, both words are used interchangeably due to what is referred to as podhup poruL pERu or expansion/widening in grammar: a word which used to denote a specific subject in the past comes to denote more general, associated subjects in the course of time.
  So Panchu Arunachalam is perfectly justified in using andhi mAlai, IMHO, given my high school level thamizh knowledge.
  RV has pointed out examples of such usage by other lyricists.
  
  BTW, I think there is also a third possible interpretation for chevvandhi mAlai in this song's context. Let me list the 3 meanings so far:
  1. chevvandhi malar mAlai pOlum kAdhali
  2. sooriyan maRaindhu adhan chenniRa nizhal mattum irukkum andhi mAlaip pozhudhu
  3. chenniRa andhippozhudhil kAdhalanukku mAlaiyAga viLangum kAdhali.
  
  My apologies to Panchu Arunachalam for these multiple interpretations. What surprises me is that like RV and Keerthi, I've listened to this song for so many years without ever getting the multiple possible interpretations.

  Bhaskar, very true that these DF discussions force us to analyze lyrics more closely.
  
  To Topic:
  Some of the romantic(?) duets from yester-years are more like mini-quizzes or puzzles. Some examples:
  1. kAtRu vandhAl thalai sAyum?
  2. viNNukku mElAdai?
  3. AN kaviyai vella vandha peNkaviyE varuga
  
  The last one is actually a formal contest. In the end of the song, the heroine throws the following verse (by kALamEgam?) at the hero:
  thAdhi thoodhu theedhu thaththum thaththai sollAdhu
  thudhi thoodhu oththiththadhu thoodhu sellAdhu
  thEdhi thiththu thoththu theedhu dheivam varAdhu
  indRu thuththi thaththum thaththai vAzha thiththiththa pOdhu
  The hero stumbles and accuses the heroine of coming up with some meaningless mumbo-jumbo, but the heroine explains the meaning thru kannadhasan's words. Would anyone like to try to solve the above?
