Your logic behind the "mottai vaNdi" is absolutely hilarious! But then again, that's the humor we all expect from you, right? :-)
Do you want me to post a line-by-line meaning of aththikkAi? If so, let me know, and I'll do so within the next hour. It will be such a pleasure to delve into those type of "meaty" songs from kaNNadhAsan.

Was mulling over this lyrics discussion during a rather stiff, formal dinner get-together today. Some thoughts to share....
In ponnezhil poothadhu pudhu vaanil, there seems to be a clever wordplay in the second line of the following couplet:
kiNNam nirambida chenganich chARuNNa
munvandha chevvandhi mAlai engE
The possibility of two interpretations in the second line had escaped me all these years; not sure if the wordplay is intended by the lyricist.
Now, moving on from ponnezhil and aththikkaai I'm wondering if any of the following two "songs" are unique in terms of "lyrics".
1. pEttai rap from kaadhalan
2. oorvasi oorvasi from kaadhalan

Kanchana:
Thanks for the explanation for aruNagirinaadhar's
song. The first line is "muththaiththiru". I am
also confused about the first line. Your explanation
for the next 5 lines look very right. We probably
have to look for a good help for getting the exact
meanings of other lines.
Your explanation for 'aththikkaai' song is useful
because, in my experience in talking to people,
I find that many think of this song to be just a
routine naming of various 'kaais' in order to have
a rhyming.
There's a story behind the endha oor song:
oru muRai arinjar aNNA, kazhaga naNbar oruvarai,
'engirundhu varugiRAy' endru kEttaar. adhaRkku
avar, 'karuvoorilirundhu varugiREn' endraar.

There are some verses in songs where you go from
one idea to another, A --> B --> C ... and at the
end you see the clarity of the whole thing. I find
such verses unique and interesting. Let me give
two examples.
1. kaadhaliththal paavamendraal kaNgaLum paavamandrO
kaNgaLE paavamendraal peNmaiyE paavamandrO
peNmaiyE paavamendraal mannavarin thaay yaarO
2.paarkkath therindhaal paadhai theriyum
paarththu nadandhaal paadhai thodarum
payaNam thodarndhaal kadhavu thiRakkum
kadhavu thiRandhaal kaatchi kidaikkum
kaatchi kidaiththaal kavalai theerum
kavalai theerndhaal vaazhalaam
Are there more like these?

Kanchana :
in athikkAi, there is a line which says veNNilavE nee thidhikkAyO.
I always used to wonder what this means : is he referring to thidhi's ?

Keerthi:
Thank you for sharing that story behind endha oor. The best bet to get the full meaning for muththaitharu baththith thirunagai may be to contact the local "saiva siththAndha sabhai" or its equivalent. Your observation re transitive logic in lyrics is a good one; I'll do some research and get back.
PG:
I had a great time laughing when I saw your question; please forgive me. :-)
What makes it humorous is that the word sirikkAyO sounds like thidhikkAyO due to PBS's thamizh pronunciation(!). I rewound my cassette and listened to that spot several times and realized why you thought it was thidhikkAyO. The actual line:
veLLarikkAi piLandhadhu pOl veNNilavE nee sirikkAyO
:-)

Few more:
- 'Theyroattaum ananda chenbagha poovaAtam' from Nool veli (KB's movie)
- 'Thenpandi theEn nila...' from Mounam Sammatham. a Mammoty starrer. Who wrote the lyrics for this song?

Kanchana:
I was not even close to 10% of the meaning that
you have mentioned for the Atthikkai Song.
Tamizh is really a amazing Language to learn!
It is a never ending learning curve ......
Thanks again for the meanings ....
The best I liked which I never thought was ...
Elakkaai vaasanai poal engaL uLLam vaazhak kaai
thOlinnuL irundhu maNam veesum Elakkaiyaip pOl
engaLiruvar manangaLum naRumaNaththOdu vaazha oLi veesu
I was touched by this explanation....
Running short of words to praise Kannadhasan!
Keerthi Sir:
Unga Endha oor endravanae explanation
DhooL! Also I was stunned by the amazing meaning
in the lines which you mentioned as A->B->C
transistion ......
kaadhaliththal paavamendraal kaNgaLum paavamandrO
kaNgaLE paavamendraal peNmaiyE paavamandrO
peNmaiyE paavamendraal mannavarin thaay yaarO ?
My answer to your lines :
KaNgal iruppadhu Kadhalippadharkku illai
peNgal iruppadhu kaNgalukku illai
Thaai iruppadhu peNmai endru karudhuvadharkku illai
kaNNukku kaanum deivam endru vanaguvadharkku!

Kanchana:
I am just pondering over the two interpretations
that caught your mind!
kiNNam nirambida chenganich chARuNNa
munvandha chevvandhi mAlai engE
One straight forward interpretation for me
is a peN in the second line.
What could be the other possible interpretaion ?
Chevvandhi mAlaiyil irukkum chevvandhi pookallil
ulla thaen-nai suvaikka varum vandugalO ? :-))))
Please clarify the curiosity!
