some similarity - especially the humming at the end of the pallavi - with the raagam pudhu raagam song. Please check the first song by Ramakrishna - yEdhO yEdhO annadhi.

Totally different moods in both the Kannada and Tamil versions. The kannada extended charanams to suit the movies'classical background i suppose.Very good compositions and arrangements.Veenai interludes are smooth flowing and pleasant. As Udhaya pointed out many of Mano's songs could have been by Deepan.
The gap between Janaki's singing and shailaja's humming is another point.Shailaja is really fortunate to have got so many chances. She strikes the sore chord in this song.
bb,2 naaL munnadi "oru veenai thannai ever meetinalum"pudhdhaga thondrum ragam"ennikku "meni veenai ondru athai meeti paarkavo" - will it followed by "Veenayena nee meetu meni thanil oor paatu"?
Pratap and Poornima ? the choice of non-actors should have been an effort to match Rajesh/Asha. Did Rajesh started his "kite flying" dance movement after kati patang? Actors choice ....naa koyi (ta)rang hai.
bb,
For the series win keep the following songs ready:
1. Vetri ettu thikkum by Vengayam's manaseega paati
2. Vetri meethu vetri vanthu by SPB with cold
3. Vetriyai naalai sarithiram sollum by SG from USV
4. EngaL DRAVID a Thiru naade by TR Mahalingam

Song of the Day: malargaLil aadum iLamai from Kalyaanaraman.

- I recently rediscovered this wonderful song from Kalyanaraman. A few of us were discussing songs that the singers haven't done justice to (Jency's name came up a lot), and one person mentioned this song. Going back and listening to this song, I tend to agree. S.P.Shailaja has sung this in a manner not doing full justice to this great song. The prelude and interludes of this song are captivating. The song gets us closer to nature and the beauty of dawn, however cliched that might sound.

bb: Panchu Arunachalam is the lyricist. I don't think the MDs used him very much.

Shailaja has a voice that could've benefitted from raiding her older brother's liquor cabinet regularly; as it is, it's a voice that could break a thousand glass windows. She did have her share of great songs like "soalikkuyilae kaalaippaniyae" and "chinnanjiru vayadhil".
Panju gave many songs in IR's early years. Pretty much all the Devaraj-Mohan and many S.P.Muthuraman directed movies had his lyrics. He also produced a few Rajini, Kamal movies where he penned some songs.

Udhaya, Shailaja could have shattered the glass on her BLC by just singing. Raiding it then would have been a piece of cake. :-)

OISG,
I was thrilled for two reasons.
1. there could be no better song than vettri ettu thikkum
2. your remembering "my manaseega Paati!" when did I tell you about her?
your fourth choice was cheek and apt ;-)

Kalyanaraman has another under rated number "ninaithal inikkum" by SJ which has mind blowing interludes. Whenever the song traverses from interludes to chanranam the landing is so rejoicing .. It is one the songs that blends in to night time loneliness in 'mottai mAdi"

In the Hindi heartland,Kaka's dancing style is known as 'Pamphlet baantna'(Bit notice veesudhal!!).

Besides 'Solaikkuyile' and the SOTD, IR gave SPS so many solos in the late 70s and early 80s, perhaps with the hope that she may come good eventually- 'Malai aruvi manikkuruvi'(Annai Or Aalayam), 'Orey mugam nila mugam(Oppandham), 'Poyya Poyya ulagam perisu'( Dharmayudham), 'Vaada en raja kanna' (Rishimoolam), 'Maaman machaan'(Murattu Kaalai), 'Poonthottam'(Nadhiyai Thedi Vandha Kadal), 'Appavoda kalyanam paaru'(Uthirippookal), 'Aasaiya kaathile thoodhu vittu'(Johny), ''Pala jenma jenmaandhara bandhangal'(Azhagiya Kanne), 'Katta vandi katta vandi'(Sakalakalavallavan), ''Rasve unnai naan ennithaan'(Thanikkaattu Raja)-- and though many of the songs became popular hits, SPS did justice to very few of them.
Kalyanaraman was based on S.Balachandar's Idhu Nijama-1948, which in turn sought inspiration from an old English film called Wonder Man.

Saravanan,
'Kalyanaraman' was remade in Hindi as 'Ghazab', with Dharmendra & Rekha. Recently, there was another clone in the form of 'Hello Brother' with Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan as the brothers (but not twin, with Salman Khan playing the ghost ), & Rani Mukherjee. Years later, Panju Arunachalam himself did an 'ultaa' with Gautami playing the twin role in 'ooru vittu ooru vanthu', shot in Singapore!!

Yes, CV- I remember Ghazab (shudder!)
And poor Panju thought SPM would do a better job than GN Rangarajan, but SPM let him down very badly in Jappanil Kalyanaraman.

Malargalil aadum has excellent flute , violin music and the second bgm is freaky. SPS 's vocals without volume control at high range suited the child-woman character of Sridevi. But "Ninaithaal inikkum" is the best song in Kalyanaraaman with marvellous music and SJ was at her sensual best to suit a maiden in full bloom.

Regd. "MalargaLil aadumiLamai pudhumayae". It could have been another "sendhoorappoovae" had SPS did better in the song.

"MalargaLil Adum Ilaymai PudumayE" is a great melody.
The raaga seems to be Mohanam, however IR has constructed it in such a way that it's not very apparent at the beginning.. I think he has also used "Shruti Bedham", where Mohanam transposes into Suddha Saveri and vice versa. Can experts please comment?

Rasika, I thought it had shades of Madhyamavathi too.

Rasika, Almost 7 to 8 months back, I had included "Malargalil aadum" song among the lo..ng list of Mohanams , composed by IR in some thread. But Purv had refuted this claim , saying it is SudhaSaveri. Yesterday, my dad and I again resumed the argument over the raaga of this song. We have not yet resolved this.

I have been trying to become a theorist in carnatic music for the last 12 years ......still trying!
The song is in Suddha Saveri with occasional Kaisiki Ni (which makes it sound like Madhyamavathi ).A general observation is that if the MD fixes the raga the Pa Murchankkaraka gets its colour too.For eg if the basic raga is fixed by MD as Uday Ravichandrika (Suddha Dhanyasi) the beauty of Hindolam(Malkaus) singing will always be attempted. But when Hindolam is the decided raga then Suddha dhanyasi becomes the Ma murchana and generally the MD & Singer would stick to Hindolam(malkaus)and would not attempt SD.You cannot hear even the shades of SD in Malaro Nilavo (Raga banthangaL).
MSV-TKR must have fixed Valaji as the base raga for Nanadri yaar tharuvar to allow the TRM & Komala to swing to Abohi.
the lesser use of Ma murchana could strengthen the theory that Anthi Mazhai pozhikirathu cannot be Ramani as mentioned by some seniors.Ramani is the Ma Murchana of vasantha.(adiyen karuthu..mudinja othukunga mudiyati vitrunga!).Possibly the the cycle of fifth is the fundamental.
Again generally IR used to keep the raga portfolio clean. This could be one of the few exceptions.Mixing anya swaras is MSV's territory like ....Desh moving close to Dvijavanthi,a predominantly Kalyani with more than occasional suddha Ma is his style to suit the solladal by KKD.
