Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Song of the Day: Background Music - II from Pithamagan.

Surya's body is discovered in the morning, in a sack.

The big scene in the movie; Vikram doesn't react to Surya's death, but finally it catches up with him when Surya's body is about to be cremated. Vikram realizes what death means and breaks down. IMO, the movie should have ended here, but true to tamil film formula, it meanders on till the hero kills the villain and brings closure.

Good stuff, bb!
Do you also have the clip they showed Raja conducting(?) on SunTV. I think it shows up in the latter part of the movie sometime when Sangeeta is slapped by Vikram.
My favorite clip is #6...and like always, makes you think what Raja could've done with a Hollywood soundtrack.

pKitcha, may be my memory is playing tricks, but I thought Clip 6 BGM was very similar to the work done by Karthik Raja in the TV serial "Bible ki kahaaniyaan" (or something like that). So, for all we know, this might have been KR's work.

indha BGMukku 2 naal continuousa SOTDa? :-) I would have preferred a re-hosting of Johny BGM pieces.
Karthik Raja is definitely capable as is quite evident from the various excellent songs and BGM(I hear that part of Siraichalai was scored by him) he has provided. Its just that when our man works solo he gets disinterested eaeliy :-)

"...Clip 6 BGM was very similar to the work done by Karthik Raja.."
for me it reminds me of the theme music in an old computer game called Caeser3, where you'll have to build an ancient Roman city out of farmlands, fishing holes & mines, with farmers, industry, army and so on.. the theme invokes a similar mood of human industry at work, getting things done. add in a mix of spookiness & a bit of barbarianism and it gets there almost perfectly.
Pithamagan had the spooky element in it throughout. for instance, listen to the second interlude of "Adada" when they play the traditional funeral sangu & the urumi melam(?).

Song of the Day: ennai vittaal yaarum illai from naaLai namathE.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ennaivittaal.rm
- Sung by K.J.Yesudas. Music by M.S.Viswanathan. Lyrics by Vaali.
- Most of the songs in this MGR movie are hits (especially naaLai namathE and neela nayanangaLil). The movie was a remake of the famous hindi movie, Yaadon Ki Baarat. This particular song is a favorite of mine, mainly due to its rhythm. As a friend used to say, "stage pakkaththilEyE irundhu jing jing-nnu thaaLam pOdara maadhiri irukku indhap paattu". There are also a few lines of Vaali that are appealing in this song, like
'yaanaiyin thantham kadaindeduththaaR pOl
angamellaam oru minuminuppu'

1. naalai namathey
2. neela nayanangalil
3. kaathal enbathu kaaviyamaanal
4. naan oru medai paadahan

bb,
Recently, I had posted this in some other thread:
One tidbit which MSV keeps mentioning in most interviews: He was under tremendous pressure to compose good tunes for 'naaLai namathE', as 'yaadOn ki baaraat' songs were still being hummed by every Tamil movie buff! As MGR was known for putting pressure on MD's, MSV requested him with folded hands " Sir, neenga recording-kku varadheenga! I am already under heavy pressure!" MGR agreed, but being the stickler that he was, he used to stand stealthily outside the recording studio, get satisfied and go away! [though I wonder (going by his status in 1975)whether it was possible at all for MGR to go anywhere stealthily!]. Needless to add, till today, I enjoy 'naaLai namathE' songs!
In this song, if my memory is right, there was some alteration done to please the censors:
"aanaiyin thantham kadaindheduththaaR pOl
angamellaam Or minuminuppu
arasa maraththin ilaigaLil onRu vanthu ninRaaRpOl oru ninaippu"
was modified as
"aanaiyin thantham......
azhagar malaiyin silaigaLil onRu vanthu ninRaaRpOl oru ninaippu".
I can only broadly guess that 'arasa maraththin ilai' is the only term that could have been remotely objectionable!!!

I was doing a google search on Naalai namathe because about 2 years ago I had mentioned it in some thread as a mark of Msv's genius that he gave original scores for such apopular remake and got questioned as to what is the big deal etc.
I did not get my comment but the following piece by Raghavan will suffice
From: G.Ragavan (@ 195.207.101.123) on: Fri Sep 15 06:30:46 EDT 2000
Do u all know the movie "Naalai Namathey"?
MSV refused to score music for that movie first.
No one refused to score music for MGR movies.
But he did. There was a reason behind that. He was
afraid that he'll be asked to reuse the hindi tunes of Original Version "Yado Ki Barat".
Only when it was assured by MGR not to reuse the tunes, he agreed and scored. None of the songs had resemblence of Hindi movie songs.
The same hindi movie was remade in Telugu with NTR with same old hindi tunes.
Thanks bb & when do you intend playing Paadum bothu & madai thirandhu?

Vengayam, any one would have been daunted when asked to work on a remake of an album that had such colossal hits like 'chura liya hai'/ 'meri soni meri tamanna'/ 'yaadon ki braat nikli hai' etc., and it was quite natural that a man like MSV would refuse to lift tunes of another composer.
I heard both the director Sethumadhavan, and MGR had to persuade MSV to undertake the venture, and MSV came out with his reputation unsullied. Though Naalai Namadhe didn't do too well, the songs were big hits.
Another song not mentioned in Ragavan's list is 'Loving is a game' by SPB & LRE.

saravanan,
Exactly. I am a die hard MSV ( and Visu-Ramu Fan!)The film while it did not set Coovam on fire did reasonably well . If you consider that it had MGR in a garish wig & a Chipen dale look alike Chandramohan it was a minor miracle. The songs were as to be expected exceptional!

Song of the Day: oru poo ezhudhum kavidhai from poovEli.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/orupoo.rm
- Sung by Chitra and Unnikrishnan. Music by Bharatwaj. This was Bharatwaj's second film or so.
- The film was produced by K.Balachander, directed by Selva. It was roughly modelled on Chithram and A walk in the clouds. Starred Karthik and Kausalya.
- Mano noted down the lyrics in our lyrics thread: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/27592.lyrics.html
- Other songs in this movie are "idharkkup peyar thaan kaadhalaa", "kadhai sollap pOrEn", "muththu muththu mookkuththi" and another favorite of mine, "vaazhkkai vaazhkkai", a short and slow song by Srinivas.

Wonderful song, bb, and a favorite of mine too :)
The song was also filmed in a very appealing manner- I still recall the shot of Abbas and Kausalya amidst hundreds of lamps.
