I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.

Have you heard the VJ-PS-SPB song Engengo Sila Manigal? You also have to check out Vaa Illamai Azhaikkindradhu, if you haven't already. These also have a "lilt," (a very "those days" thing,) which you can never quite put a finger on :-)

Got it but still ...
I take objection on two counts.
1. Saravanan is certainly not a waste here. I just read the article on GKV. Such a fluid work.Apart from Lasara it is only Saravanan who makes you hear music even as you read. The only failing is that he -like my manasiga paati is a very generous soul - so he ends up seeing only the good ponts in everybody!

No way ,preaching of any sort is bad be it for religious or musical conversion!

Nice to know that you hear the music in Saravanan's words. So much better than silence.
"Preaching to the converted" is merely a way of saying "you have your constituents who are enthralled by what you have to say." No pulpit or messiahs here. "Religious"ness (in this context) has little to do with divinity and more to do with a "acknowledgement" I included my name in that list if you read my post.

I am curious about the "they" in your post. Who is this "they" - do they fall in the two categories you've identified?
I don't know who the "new" converts are, nor can I tell them from the "originials."
And about the "born-again" zeal - you've got to admit that, if nothing else, it makes the rest (in the world at large) look decidedly effete and lazy :-)
Whether is applies to this place: You're the best judge of that.

I didn't do a detailed research before posting those two sentences! Still, I think "They" and the "world at large" are synonymous and they(!) include the 'originals', the 'new converts' and the 'outsiders'! (who can further be classified as 'could be converted', 'neutral/ indifferent' and 'those who refuse to be converted'!!!!)

Hey let me jump in too...
I also have to disagree with Naaz a bit. To ask Saravanan to restrict VJ's rarities to just this thread is like asking VJ to sing/record only tamil songs since she is a tamilian. Had that happened, the gems that she sang in telugu, for instance, would never have been the same in somebody's voice. I agree with vengayam in that the generous contributions of Saravanan to this forum in various forms have been incredible.
And as Saravanan says, not all who listen to SOTD, post there (me included). Hopefully that meagre response to such a wonderful song should not deter Saravanan away from posting more of those.

The request was not necessarily "restrict"ive. Yes, I did advocate that Saravanan should consider bringing the VJ songs to this thread as much as possible, and also share his rare collection at the egroup where there are some genuinely appreciative members. The VJ songs presented at the SOTD thread have seldom garnered a rousing response (for that matter, the many links of songs he has presented in this thread have often gone un-thanked and un-commented)and that's just that.
Saravanan is, in his own way, demonstrates his penchant for refinement in TFM, and his words march to an aesthete's drum. His hope could only be to lead us to a higher peak of appreciation.
Least we can do is to remind ourselves (vocally) that we are the ones privileged by his ardent initiatives.
I know for a fact that you been wowed by the songs he has presented, and have said so time and again.

'Mei silirkkuthu' is from Mookanaankayiru. ( among my favorite JC-VJ songs! And I always used to wonder why JC switches to Malayalam and VJ to Tamil in the end :)
'Yaaro yaaro' is from Panam Pathum Seiyum.

Mei Silirkudhu" is a typical MSV song, with all the flavour of Dakshinam! Did the film feature Karthik and Uma (or was it Viji?) (I vaguely recall Mookkanankayriu being a stage play...and I am sure this is what led to Neel D's confusion regarding the title.) The song has that typical malayala manam (which did not really rise to the top in ARRs Nenjinile Nenjinile...with that Thakathimiaadumthanganilave moment.) and took me to another MSV composition with the same kerala touch: Svara Raga Sruthiyodhu Vilayadum Kaviye, Anuraga Mohangal Unarththugaiyu..." (thagazhi, please pardon my malayalam :-) VJ-PJC - amazing presence and grace in both the songs!

Talking of malayala vaadai. I always loved manthara malare ( naan avanillai) . Fora brief period it looked as if JC would be right there at the top - Oru vaanavil, chitira chevvanam,Pon enna poo venna kanne etc but it later proved to be an acoustic illusion :-( he did come up with rasathi unnai et al but the zing was not there.
rather like Unni Menon's Nathiye nathiye ( Rhythm) I love the song but still without being able to put my finger on it-something is missing. Am I imagining KJY's soul? It is unfair but every time i hear it- which is quite often- I end up this way.

When we sit in front of the silver screen, snatching a few moments of darkness and arc-light dreams, do we pause, do we step out into day hours later, to ponder how we’ve not just watched and reveled, but we’ve also been read and reignited – yet again -
to idealize and idolize?
In other words: We go in as a Subject, but do we step out as the Object?
The song from Cinema Paiththiyam reduces this crossover into dazzling imagery, all of it unfolding in two stanzas and chorus like a hackneyed plot, a sequined romance, and a hormone rampant fan letter.
The heroine of the film (played by Jai Chitra) is a pubescent schoolgirl in pigtails and pinafore, compulsive in mischief and obsessive in hero-worship. Her idol (and ideal man) is a middle-aged movie star (played by Jai Shankar) more huff than buff, and still Brylcreem slicked to churn a maiden’s erotic dreams. Problem is, our heroine has been spoken for. And the guy on the screen has a wife and life outside of it. Repress or Refract? She opts for the latter.
This song is what might be termed a “date-ditty.” She is out with him, but thinking of huffy Him. She sings a song to Him; and he thinks it is an invitation to him. (You miss the capitals in that, and you’ve just missed the plot of the whole film.)

The turnaround takes place in the very beginning. Although the song is about a girl’s celluloid yearnings, the possessive En makes her the silver screen. Self (the girl) and Projection (the cinema screen) are blurred, and the heart can only reflect what it sees.
It sees Him. Adhil Un Vannamae Ponnoviyam.
Within her, flashing inside and out, a film of her own, which she can choose to cast.

Some illusions are necessary. We all construct these parables of projection, but never quite get around to asking who’s playing whom? How does this Script write itself, time and again?
Fantasies are an interrogatives-free zone. We all will this merging of Subject (us) and Object (cinema/idol/sport-star). Next time you emerge from the theatre of the self, look around and you will realize that every BODY is playing to full houses. Listen closely, and you just might hear the mirror crack.
