*women being beated thrice in the movie...
+ i guess u happened to close ur eyes when Arjun slaps madhubala in GM, When pankaj kapoor slaps his sister in Roja, When kamal slaps revathi in Punnagai mannan. [ i hav given one example each frm the films of ur fav Directos. can giv more if think abt it]
and all the instances ive mentioned were serious instances while in PM the whole sequence was made to enhance comedy effect.
______________________________
The only answer I am going to give for this is that they were 'necessary' though not completely for the emphasis of the story or the character.
You can't have a brother slapping his younger sister for misbehaving terribly (according to him, freeing his captive was a loss).
In Gentleman, yes, it was a bit harsh, but again, it was enforced as a normal interaction between the characters and NOT for the viewers (spectators) of the film. That is, Arjun's character wanted to reinforce the idea of Madhubala's character not loving him.
And, of course, Kamal's slapping Revathi is both to reinforce the character of his, and also the above reason.
But, in Pithamagan, it was deliberately done - according to you, for comedy effect. Ha! You laughed in that scene? Well, I (and, I believe most people with normal sense of humour) wouldn't have!

Well abt sridhar iam not much knowledgable cos ive watched very few movies by him and dont remember much.

Then again, you shouldn't have commented about Sridhar from then.
But, why did you still comment about K.Balachander and Sridhar? Well.

film has absolutely no story line at all!...
+ who gav u the idea that films need a story line at all? many world classics like bicycle thieves, roshoman etc., doesnt hav a definite storyline. u can always comment upon them as well ' a man needsa bicycle to work, tries to steal one, gets caught, gets thrashed up, cries aloud - That is the story? Well, again!

Quote: Akira Kurosawa - The difference between a documentary and a feature film is, a documentary has no story.
If you don't know Akira Kurosawa, he is the best and the most-famous (world-renowned) Japanese Director.
Now, by saying it had no story line, I didn't mean it figuratively had none. I just meant that it literally didn't have one. That is, even though the story was there, it was thinner than a wafer.
And, as far as the films you mentioned are concerned, they were good films 'cause of the excellent screenplay, which is happily (not meaning I am happy) missing from Pithamagan.

*not to mention about the screenplay...
+ ive got everything to mention abt screenplay abt PM. if u hav no comments abt janakraj a tamil josiar leading his life at a terror filled state like kashmir in Roja or a Terrorist who studied at coimbatore speaking tamil [ the hindi version was worser]. or if u hav no comments upon sethupathi getting into airport runway with a jeep and after killing his son gets away colly to hongkong [ or is it Australia] in Indian.then i dont notice any flaws in PM screenplay.
__________________________
I am sorry sir, but you have to really learn the difference between screenplay and logic.
Take for example, Mudhalvan. Arjun being a Chief Minister for one day is the story (a part of it, rather). But, HOW he does it. What activities he does. HOW he gets the favour of the people. Those things make the screenplay.
Take Alfred Hitchcock's Birds. Can you tell me the story of that film? In 200 words? MINIMUM? Impossible. But, HOW it all happens. What are all the sequence of happenings that take place? THAT makes the screenplay.
Janakaraj being in Kashmir, a terrorist who studied in Coimbatore, and Indian Thatha going to Hong Kong all comes under Logic. I was NEVER speaking of that in my review.
But, I have to comment that however ridiculous these instances are (logically), there is always a possibility that they could have been possible. Take for example, Harry Potter stories. Though some instances (in the story) are not logically right, there IS a possibility of them happening.
Or, coming back, why couldn't have Indian Thatha gone off in another International flight, at another terminal? Did they tell you all flights were suspended after the blast in one terminal? And, a character who had shown so much of "planning" throughout the movie could well have arranged for a smooth travel, with passports, visa, tickets everything (could easily be fakes as well!). Or, there could also be some other possibilities.
And, do you mean to say no tamil people live in Kashmir and Jammu? Please ask somebody living in there (if possible on the internet) how many tamil people they know living there.
And, do you mean all terrorists are pure Pakistanis? You mean to say NO indians are terrorists fighting "against" India? Well.

*How did Laila and Surya start loving each other?
+ isnt it funny that when we had no questions asked when Nirosha says I love u to karthick in Agninatchatram or Shobana loving RK after seeing him doing a gruesome murder we hav all sorts of questions like this!
________________________
Well it isn't! What was told in Agni Natchatram was Nirosha LOVED (past tense, mind you) Karthick, and so, she tried to express it to him. You will agree only when the actress tell her friends that she is in love with Karthick?
But, in Pithamagan, Laila starts loving Surya just after he talks to her (in that fashion) in the jail (hmm...). Don't see it ridiculous?
And, as far as Shobana loving RK, which movie is that? Who is the director? Does RK stand for Rajini Kanth?

*And, finally, people are talking about excellent characterisation. This is agreeable to a certain extent, but still, this could be done with a "little" bit of imagination or by actually visitng places like lunatic asylum, or even some really OLD villages or the like places, watching many people there, merging their characters and going on from there.
+ Exactly this is wat we call homework and a Directors potential of keen observation over the society. thank god u didnt ponder upon teh question often asked lie mwhy did sithan behaved like that.
______________________
Well, of course, I didn't ask "why" the character of Vikram behaved like that because it is obvious that Bala made a blunder. So, why is it that Selvaragavan took that kind of a time explaining why the teens became like that (in Thulluvatho Illamai) or why Dhanush's character acted like that in Kadal Kondein.
So, you mean to say just keen observation of people (or society, saying it your way) would make a good (though not great) director? I do NOT think so. The real potential of a director stems from his imaginative power and his ability to make people act! And, not just copying some rare real-life characters.

* the ratings
+ the people and almost all magazines like Anadavkatan, kumudam, kalki hav given 5*s for the movie. even a literary magazine like theeranadhi has applauded the movie. so we over here care a damn abt ur ratings.
_____________________
Did I ask you to "give a damn" about MY ratings? I just gave what "I" thought was appropriate and NOT for others. And, did I say that Kumudham gave 70/100 (maximum being 80 though) for Arasu?

In non-relative term(i.e. without comparing with other directors and/or films), if we see the movie, the development of love between surya and laila is crappy, comparable to the a junk run-of-the-mill-masala-thamizh movie. That too when lot of things are being raved about the film and the director.
Also, to some extent, the reason for vikram(siththan) being "animal-like" character is not depicted (even implicitly we could not make out why and how vikram behaves so).
you mean those directors as craps esp. sridhar and K.B? Just to defend bala? You could have avoided such a unfounded sweeping statements esp. on those two greats. Even i have many reservations about K.B. but wouldn't make such statements against him.

to an extent this a format of film making where the director decides upon the character first then builds upon the plot [ this is usually done for all rajini/ mgr movies :-)].

Am I right when I say Balachander and Manirathnam who had taken movies with Rajinikanth doesn't do in this fashion?
