But I cried after seeing Lorry Driver Rajakannu. To watch " 2+1" dialogue from the mouth that voiced Sakthi Krishnaswami s powerful dialogues ,boy!it pains even today. When did the fall start?

OISG, Remakes in which Sivaji's performance is better than original. Vasantha maaligai springs to mind. ANR did a competent job but in VM two scenes stand out . One during the baga Pirivinai scene -sivaji comes to vanisri's rescue " Gnyayathai yaar vennumnaalum ketkallam and the scene which brings out the true colour of the character " Naan than Sorry kettutenne!".
I would have loved to remake " Bale Pandiya" with the scientist's character etched out better. What you see is literally just a glimmer of Sivaji's ability to blend with the character & subtle humour. It should have been elaborated.
I am also amazed by the dual role in gowravam where he has played kannan so very well which makes the perippa appear larger than life. and the one truly great scene in Deiva magan (which otherwise was overly melodramatic blame it on AC Tirulokachander!) where the three appear in one frame. Probably nature intended it this way we have to sift the LRD,AKs to find the pearls. My perennial favourite is Alayamani . The shades of grey have never ever been touched by any other Indian actor.

yes vengayam. aalayamani is one of the best movies. Sivaji's character was well formed and performed. All other characters except M.R.Radha are white characters. How a grey character understands wrongly and corrects itself were shown very well. screenplay by sankar. It is a masterpiece. Another simillar movie is Andavan Kattalai.

G.Ragavan,
'Paritchaikku nEramaachchu' chicken scene goes like this:
Sivaji (koonik kuRugik koNdu): adhu ennamO chicken 65 yaame adha konjam pottalam kattik koduppaa!
One onlooker: idha paarraa! ayyaru chicken vaangaRaru!
Shopkeeper: Summa irungappaa! paavam avarukku enna nirbhandhamO?!
(I don't remember if Sivaji himself says " en nirbhandham unakkup puriyaadhuppaa!")

That Sivaji's calling "Varadhu(k)utti" still haunts me.

There was one good movie "Vazhkai" i think with a good song "Kaalam maralam nam kadhal marumo" with sivaji and his trade mark coat and big wig with ambika . I assume ambika's father was thengai. But the movie was good.

sats,
I guess that was the one I was talking about earlier (didn't Pandyan act in the same movie as his son? and is it the movie he invents something in increasing the fuel efficiency of a car and becomes a rich man later in life after a lot of humiliation from his sons?)
It is nice to see the 'good' side of the great actor after we laughed at his 'comic' side.

You are correct, Pandyan is not the son but a faithful servant in that movie and takes care of shivaji after his son's leave him.Shivaji's hand become crippled in an accident in that movie. Good one though.

Vazhkai was a remake of Hindi Avatar by Rajesh Khanna.Thats what i call desparation!I would rather prefer a Padmalaya movie by Krishna for a remake.
Partichaikku nermachu - the only bright thing about that movie was PJ s "Oru Osai indri maunamaga".
Coming to back attempts on finding the small glimpses of the great actor even in run-off movies- I was particularly impressed by the scene in Mridanga chakravarthy when he tries to control his fingers -The rain drops would hit the earth in a rhythmic pattern .Being a mridangist it would entice him to go play along but he would have made a vow earlier, not to play. The crane shot over the swing- it was an exceptional

OSIG,
paritchaiku neramachu has one more good song "Mallihaip Poocharam Manjalin Mohanam" by PS-VJ. It is a very good song.
I think vaazkai is remake of a malayalam movie. Madhu and K.R.Vijaya acted in that. I doubt Keralites make remake movies. Vaazkai was ok kind of movie. I remember three good songs. Kaalam Maaralam (SPB-VJ), Mella Mella Ennaith Thottu (PS) and Anbirukum Ullangale (group song).

y'day had the misfortune of watching a song called "Varadhappa varadhappa" from the movie 'Baabu'... goodness gracious... how can an actor of the calibre of Shivaji stoop to that level of dancing and singing such a song??? couldnt believe my eyes really... is that the same Shivaji i adore and admire in 'Karnan'?

vj, I feel the performance in that song is well and good. we cant expect a rickshaw fellow to dance with rhythamic steps. it is unnatural. In the same movie there is another song "Itho endtham Deivam". He brings the feeling of having god in the front. As a rickshaw man the performance was really good. Otherwise it'll be like artificial rickshaw man in "Rickshawkaran".

G.Ragavan, my posting was not about his performance.. he did perform what the character demanded...but why did he have to stoop to that level of song with lewd lyrics, dirty dancing with erotic-kinda steps etc...? the choice of the song/lyrics and the dancing movements are the ones which make me wonder.. "is this a Shivaji movie?" or some 'director Karnan' movie.

Vj,
probably the song would not look odd in the whole context. As Raghavan has mentioned Sivaji plays a rickshaw puller (kai rickshaw) . He is dependent on koodaikaari for his midday meals( remember it was pre MGR:-)) so he has to wait for the left overs. hence the song the lyrics also underline the point
Ghulam kadar pulavila kari irrukirathu athu anumantha rao ....a ...
maryamma carrieril eral irrkuthu athu padmanabha iyer kuzhambil mithakkudu.samayallellam kalakutthu athu samthuvathai villakuthu etc
So for babu vanji carrying kanji is probably more than kanji varadhappan and hence the song!
The movie is very melodramatic but sivaji's performance including the song in q is impeccable.

Saw Bruce Almighty.Morgan s role- i once gain thought of Sivaji in Uruvangal Maralam.
Unexpectedly Morgan Falls short of expectations with his dialogue delivery and Jim carry despite his below the belt humour has done well.Kamal would have seen this - I expect Mauli or Vaali Playing god with Madhavan playing Jim carrey-produced by Kamal!
Another movie that is worth discussing for Sivaji s performance is "PeriyaZhvar"in Thirumal perumai.
Think of the father s predicament- a daughter who loves adores and wants to marry only Arangathemman.Periyazhvar himself was an ardant devotee but this one bouncer one from the daughter was above even his head! His choice was limited - either be a pragmatic father or the ultimate bhaktha.Sivaji brought in the duality wonderfully.
Another thing about the makeup for this role - I remember Sujatha s mention about " Irania Chivappu " among "Iyengars".Sivaji s make up was terrific - the Shaving Pachai on a red face with Palich Thirumann -a common sight at Srirangam.
Who taught him these things?None!
I cannot think of another person playing this.
(sivaji compensated with an outrageous performance as Neelan -(thirumangai Alwar) in the same movie)

OSIG, thirumal perumai is another wonderful movie. Just watch the "Hari Hari Gokula Ramana" song. Sivaji and Kutti Padmini stand in front of ranga mannar with bakthi and start singing. in the middle, kutti padmin will grow as K.R.Vijaya and sivaji becomes old. still they'll stand till the end of the song at the same dot. but without much body movements(in fact no movements), bakthi over ranga mannar was shown well and enough.

"Comedy is serious business. Making people laugh is definitely no joke. And Sivaji Ganesan understood it as much as the greatest comedians. That's why his attempts at levity continue to live. To this moment actor Sivaji Ganesan remains
ubiquitous, thanks to television. Not a day passes without one channel or the other airing his film or at least clippings from his films. Two years have passed but you still cannot believe that Sivaji Ganesan is no more. "

Actually I tried to a CIA job, mount anti-sivaji campaign and bring out the Sivaji-Fans to come out with spectacular write-ups.
I am not sure whehther Malathi Rengarajan of hindu was impressed by my audacious campaign! In fact I was thinking of this link here. But i was stuck at work and could not reach newtfmpage for about 4-5 days.
Thanks.

Hi,
Sivaji is a true genius. All his Paa-series movies (mostly directed by Bhim Singh) and all his bhakti movies (directed by AP Nagarajan) are master pieces. Can any one matches these performances? I guess none can match them.
May be his late 70 and 80 movies are below his standard and flops. But he did give good movies like M.Chakravarthy, Thevar magan, mudhal mariyathai and so on. I guess Tamil Cinema never used him fully and never matched his expectations.
