That s from this person who has seen Gauravam,Ooti Varai Uravu,Anda Naal atleast 10 times.I had wept seeing Pasamalar,Kappal ootiya thamizhan.

But I cried after seeing Lorry Driver Rajakannu.To watch " 2+1" dialogue from the mouth that voiced Sakthi Krishnaswami s powerful dialogues ,boy!it pains even today.When did the fall start?

I watched all these dud movies.MSV was a saving grace in some of them.(Appada TFM connection established!)

  you are off by a long mile. the movie is Bandham and the moppet " Baby Shalini". Even as i type the line I shudder. That was one time while watching the movie in a picture hall that I almost lost my cool and felt like tearing the screen in the fond hope of silencing her.( Till then I had always been amused amused when people used to abuse MN nambiar when he as much as pushed MGR in a fight... but Shalini was an eye opener.she made me forget that I was watching a movie!!)Of course in the wake of the movie had I seen Baby shalini in flesh & blood I might have strangulated her. such was my reaction. It was my & Ajit's good luck that she did not come my way.

  Shalini set the bench mark for "Pinjil Pazhutha Kuzhanthai".You are indeed saved of Brahmahathi dosham due to Sisuvathai!
  
  We were seeing Uthaman in our Talkies.Frustration was growin every minute with the audience.Sivjai cries " En Kavalayai naan yaar kitta solli Azhuven"
  
  Suddenly a voice from the becnh ticket replied " MapLai(a Trichy dialect!) 75 kasu koduthu ondrai mani nerama porumaya utkarthukittu irukkenla? Engitta solli Azhu".
  
  What is more intriguing is Sivaji s sudden love (is it lust?) for steamy scenes - In Uthaman with Manjula,With JL in chitrapournami,With Vani sree in Nallathoru kudumbam and with KRV in many movies? Was there an advice from Palani Dr.Kalimuthu?
  
  But even during this time Neethpathi there was some underplay.
  
  For the whole fiasco i put the major blame on the half-baked directors and Sivaji himself takes a 40% and fans like me who went and saw General Chak take the balance 10%.
  
  Every time while watching a post 75 Sivaji movie the last episodes of Sujatha s Kanavu Thozhirchalai would come to mind.Sivaji has a heavy share of Moondru Rojakkal!
  
  Thanks to Kamal ,Sivaji signed off with one of the best movies of the last 2 decades with a great performance.Prob the only insider of Gollywood who knew his worth was Kamal.

  OISG - Sivaji acted in "oncemore" and "padayappa" after Devar Magan right ? As u said its the directors who should have put a hold when Sivaji "overflows" :-). Look at Mudhal mariyadhai and Devar Magan. BR, did not let Sivaji to do any overacting stuff. Same in Devar magan.

  Yes OISG so it was that I saw Kathalukku mariyadhai after the whole world had seen it. I still could not get over Shalini! I have still not seen Amarkallam or any other Shalini movie. In tamil the only child artistes I like are(were) Shamili ( her overacting is very much acceptable) and the one real Pinchil pazhutha Haja Sharif, be it Puthiya vaarpugal, uthiri Pookal or the unforgetable Antha 7 naatkal he was always good( even though as u say P.P.p. anju was great in uthiri Pookal but she was too small too overact!
  Coming back to Sivaji for every Uthaman he had a Uthama Puthiran
  for every
  LDR he had a Pacchai Vilakku
  for every Bantham he had a Paasa Malar.
  I cry everytrime I watch Sean connery, Jack Nickalaus, Anthony Hopkins play lead roles. Inge nobody wrote mature roles for Sivaji appadi vandhal kooda there has to be a flashback anda duet.
  We are talking about a man who in the late 60s starred as a father to Kanchana, Jayalalitha et al in Motor Sundaram Pillai. A person who could bring out shades of grey better than anybody else. that we did not use him upto his potential is entirely our fault.

  I was also audience of the times when Shivaji became comical with his extra ordinary 'wigs', oversized blazers that hung from his chest etc and etc. I would say he still did a good film now and then; I remember one with Pandyan in his son role (does any one remember the title of it?).
  
  It is nice to reminisce a lot of Shivaji films of that time. I was reading this thread for amusement (No, I wouldnt certainly belittle the great actor; I would only say he made us laugh too in his harmless way!), but it is nice to go through nostalgic memories of the times when movies were released lesser in number and actors were of great prominence.

  I think later part of Sivajis movies were bad because TFM was going through a period where they got introduced to formula movies (gangster movies was like everywhere)and someone who tries differently like Mahendran, Mani ratnam (He could have given us another face of Sivaji) or Balachander didnt use him. I would anyday watch some of Sivajis color movies and most of BW movies. He is a genius who did not get used by TFM properly and made to overact (and many praised his overacting like last scene of pasamalar than the early stages where he was very natural).
  
  Though old movies were good (story wise), its over dramatic, because TF directors and viewers did not understand the medium and treated it like drama where you need to exaggerate your expressions and voice, so that every one of the audience can get the experience. You can see alot of this in western theatres even today ( I really doubt that true drama exist in Tamil Nadu now). Mahendran and others changed the way movie is made and Balachander adapted to it. So you cannot blame Sivaji because most of the actors of yesteryears did this.
  
  I wish there were actors like Baliah, Ranga rao with MR Radha and Sivaji acting in movies now in a mature role.

  saravanan, who acted in aalayadeepam? any good songs? even if there, cud hv gone unnoticed. like some of the songs from Varam and Kootup Puzukal.
  
  Sabesan, I have heard Sivaji does what the director wants. Also heard that he accepts all the corrections told by the directors. I feel the main mistake was the half-boiled directors. Have u seen "Pooparika Varuhirom". It is a real nice movie. His performance was very good. Normally he was not intruding others domain (unlike MGR). That anger he shows in Thevar Mahan by throwing the chair was enough to show what he cud do. He was not utilized properly by may of post-75 directors. Even he did well in Uruvangal Maaralam and in Muktha Srinivasan movies.

  "gigi gik geee" Gili akooooi...
  "shoWlApur raja kolApur rani"
  "Halo my dear doctor or something similar"
  and all songs from a movie called Sivapu suriyan.

  That's the sterling and sad point about the great man. He treated the profession with the sort of respect that borders on the devotional, never questioning even the rookie director. And this is precisely the quality that our 'veterans' exploited to such miserable ends.
  
  OISGs point about Kamal's (rather late in the day) tribute in the form of Thevar Magan was right. I'm not sure how many of you have seen Prathap Pothen's "Yathramozhi" (Mal) that has SG pairing with Mohanlal, another great actor of our times. Even though the screenplay meandered from the poignant to the mundane every now and then, the movie provides enough substance for students of acting to mull over.
  
  To my mind, the latter half of Sivaji's portfolio has precisely 4 such films in which both his role and his equation with the other lead character was well etched - 1) Dorai's film "Thunai" where he plays a govt. servant travelling in the electric train to work, and develops this special relationship with Saritha 2) Muthal Mariyathai with Radha 3) The classic Thevar Magan with Kamal and 4) Yathramozhi with Mohanlal. To Dorai, Bharathiraja, Bharathan/Kamal and Prathap/Mohanlal, we must be grateful for those few crumbs that came our way to illustrate his brilliance and virtuosity.

  One can add YG Mahendran's 'pareetchaikku nEramaachchu' to your list of Sivaji classics in the past two decades. In fact, I would rate it a shade better than 'Gowravam' and 'Vietnam Veedu' where he played Brahmin roles to near perfection!

  The steamiest for me was the scene in a loghouse in the jungle with Sujatha in 'Andhamaan Kaadhali' ! On those days, I remember how with a 'guilty' conscience, we used to enjoy such fits of romance of the Nadigar Thilagam.

  Nice ones Suresh and Ragavan.I saw both Uruvangal Maralam and Oh!God.(Yet to see Bruce Almighty ofcourse!Morgan Freeman another 60+ ..hmm ).Sivaji gave a good performance more or less equal to the award winning performance of Barnes.
  
  It is indeed sad that we did t have enough stock of good directors to script for a 60+ Sivaji.Even Jai Shankar, a lesser actor got a fair chance when Katretha Kilikoodu was remade in Tamil.Even a dull, yet a veteran, like Sivakumar had "Ini oru sudhanthiram" and "Marupakkam".
  
  60+ Rengarao s nice cameo in Selvam is another pointer.When great actors grow old we should leaarn to use them in short spells.....short cameo roles.....they will get used to the new developing trends.
  
  LEarn a few lessons from Richard Hadlee s career post 85.
  
  Kamal OTOH should break the jinx and i see him taking cues from, if not emulating, Connery,Hopkins careers.

  Uthamaputhiran,Pachai Vilakku -Andha NaaLum Vanthidatho? I remember with joy his innocent dialogue "Mama! Andha VaaLai Kodungal.Satru veasip paarkiren".
  
  Even in remakes he used to excel bringing in better emotions and understanding the roles more effectively than the original s heros. For eg.Enga Mama - The "Kanivu" which was missing in Brahmachari s Shammi was ably brought out by Sivaji -as a guardian of an orphanage.
  
  Engiruntho vanthal - Watch out for his expression when he returns normally after the Villain s death.A delighted JL running from person to person saying "Avarukku ninaivu vanthiruchu".Confusion,Curiosity, written all over his face -watching JL....Sanjeev a decent actor could not bring it in Khilona.
  
  Sivaji in essence was the Character he played in Thillana moganambaL."Enakku Nadhaswaratha thavira vera ethuvum theriyathu" -ShanmughaSundaram s words fit him to a T.Avarukku nadippai thavira ethuvume theriyathu!With Vaithis in plenty in Director s garb he ended up manipulated and thus maligned.

  Yes. "Paritchikaiku Neramachu" was the one about which I was talking. It is a very good movie. As u said, it has better brahmin performance than gowravam and viyetnam veedu. YGMahendra asks for chicken. He goes to military hotel to buy. That sequence was too good. It is difficult to explain. Worth watching. In one more scene, he'll try to buy question paper for money. With guilty consious ....it is real good movie to watch.
  In fact I liked "Keez vaanam Sivakum". Sequences of competition with saritha were really good.

  I think I remember "aalayadeepam". Sujatha, Rajesh and Illavarasi *ing movie. Sujatha becomes cine star. right?
  
  Thillana Mohanambal is ultimate. No need to talk. Also in navarathiri, the drama artist. therukoothu with saavithri. There are many things to discuss.
