he felt the jury appreciated the way he has sung that song. He was saying that song expresses many emotions of a person whose lover has not understood his love. - Sivaselvam...do you really believe that SPB hasn't sung better representing emotional songs before this song came out? Many of SPB's old songs (before IR's entry)in telugu were literally filled with the honey of his voice and were much more superior in terms of melody and emotions than this "Minsara Kanavu" song.
If one looks at the awards of SJ, one can come to a solid conclusion that awards mean nothing. Take a hard look (listen!) at those three songs of hers which won the national awards (I am excluding Oppol in mallu since I haven't heard the song at all). How difficult are those songs to any seasoned singer? But hasn't she done many more amazing feats and handled much more difficult songs in her entire career which deserve national recognition. Of course, she has. In "Gems of chithra" thread, this topic was briefly discussed and a poster named Meerakrishna has even mentioned a few of SJ's songs in kannada which were inimitable and unbeatable to this day. Where did those songs go when national awards for that particular year were being considered?
KJY was given the award for Aakasha deshaanaa for Meghasandesham in telugu. You guys listen to all the songs in that movie and you'll agree with me that this would be the last song of choice for a national award. He has sung many good songs in telugu and many of them were better than aakasha...
So, nothing much different than what is already pointed out by other posters - National awards are not exactly a true reflection of a musician's potential

It again goes down to personal tastes. The jury contains human beings like us and they have their own taste. If any particular song appeals to the majority of them then that song gets the BEST attention.
But yes, awards mean something becoz once we know that SPB got an award for that song(Thanga thaamarai) we give spl attention to it.:-) and hear how has he performed in it.
But for a true music listener awards doesnt mean anything.Even if IR is my fav. idhayakiol songs are not less in anyway to award winning sindhu bhairavi songs.
And we all know that the Doctor who treated Mr.Vajpayee's leg got an award.:-)

There is no scale to decide who is the best. It is very hard to judge. Awards don't mean anything. KJY sings atleast one very good song in every year that is better than all the other songs. Can we give it to him every year? The awards are used to encourage new and upcoming artists. "Veedu" won the national award. Commercially it was a failure.

Porale Ponnuthayi was a mediocre song. She sang "Malayil yaro" very well. S.Janaki sang "Vasantha kala kolangal" from Thyagam ultimately. This song turned me into an ardent fan of SJ. She didn't win any award.

By the way,
Virasat was a remake, agreed.. but the MD in Hindi was Anu Malik. He just lifted IR's Inji Iduppazhagi song and voila, the songg gets yet another National award!!!
IMO SJ should have got one for
'pOn vAnam panneer thoovudu' (Indru Nee nALai nAn, MD: IR)
'SangeethamE En JeevanE' (kOvil PuRA, MD: IR)
PS for:
'mAlai pozhudin mayakkathilE' (Bhagyalakshmi)?
Azhagan muruganidam Asai vaithEn (PanchavarNa kiLi)
Sonnadhu nee thAnA Sol Sol En UyirE (Nenjil Or Alayam, MD: V-R)
Mannavan vandhAnadi thOzhi (Tiruvarut chelvar, MD: KVM)
KJY for 'dEva Sangeetham neeyallE' (Guru-Malayalam, MD: IR)
'AkAsha thAmara pOlE' (ayAL katha paRayunnu, Malayalam, MD: Raveendran)
SPB & MSV for 'Nitham nitham En kaNNODu inbak kanA'(Koottu puuzhukkaL)

The award for female category (BEST FEMALE PLAYBACK SINGER) was introduced only in 1969. The first award went to PS for NaaLai indha veLai paarthu (Uyarndha manidhan) in 1969. The songs listed above (most of them) were before 1969, I guess. But anyway, they are classic songs, which deserves something more than National award.
In the 80's, PS sung a heart-beating song in "ThaNNeer thaNNeer". Song: "Kannana poomagane...". In that, the last line "Veetu viLakerivadharkku ThaNNeer... eNNai illayada" endru, nenju vimma paaduvaar.. what a song? what an emotion... She did not get award for that... But I guess Vairamuthu got an award for that...
What to do? hhhmmmmmmmm.

National awards for songs and bgm....
What chance is there from the nut committee in India for truly identifying the real good songs and the BGMs when even in Oscar the hollywood committee are so biased and can't even identify a score which truly deserve the award??
Don't know abt amateur composers but the genuine one won't bother.
Don't know abt amateur composers(=hummers=arangers) but THE GENUINE ONE won't bother.

You think these nuts can identify the brilliant bgm in the movie "Indru Poi Nalai Vaa" during where Bagyraj crosses the road opposite his house to approach the little child in Radhika's house? You think they can tell the brilliance in that circus like theme with that infant beauty attached to it?
Nor do you think these idiots can identify the recurring very beautiful and emotional tear jerking theme for the baby in 'Munthanai Mudichu'?
You think they can?? Don't waste your time with these toy presented from these time wasting nuts.
Dream on.

Reg the national awards for music (since this is TFM Page)...it always happens that people talk about the uselessness of these awards when one of the composers they hate gets it. For instance, now would be the best time for a HCIRF to discuss how biased the jury was and how silly they behaved while zeroing in on the nominations. The reason? ARR has won this yar's best music award for Lagaan.

Kaumudi,
Awards or No awards, I dont care a bit and I like SPB any day. I am not saying Thangath Tamarai is the best song of SPB. I was only saying it is not really unfair, the award for that song. In my opinion singers like SPB, PS, SJ and VJ are beyond awards.
"I wish",
All the songs you mentioned are too great for any awards. (I dont know about Malayalam songs though). If awards are given to those songs it the award that is awarded and not the song.
"SPB & MSV for 'Nitham nitham En kaNNODu inbak kanA'(Koottu puuzhukkaL)"
When I heard this song i was stunned of its beauty. Another similar song I would recommend is "SPB and MSV" in Enakkoru kadali irukkindral.

Karthik S,
I congratulate ARR for Lagaan,
But I sure am disappinted that the jury again ignored one of IR's best works in terms of songs and BGM - Azhagi ... same happened for Bharathi last time - lost to a commercial movie (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam ??),
I am NOT telling Lagaan music was Bad or Commercial movies shouldn't get any award at all ... But I feel when it comes to awards, we have to give more importance to things than their commercial value / popularity among people ... thats whe B. Lenin has won an award for a film which was not even released in theatres / not seen by more than 1000 people in tamilnadu !

Irrespective of ARR's nomination, the jury has been condemned for years. Don't u remember the articles in kumudam, vikatan etc..etc.criticizing the jury when Sivaji Ganesan's name was left missing..I have never understood the reason for not choosing "Bharathi" movie as the best of that year. There is hell lot of North/South politics, Language discrimination & Recommendation favors playing in. Yes, it looks serious sometimes, but most of the times they look like big jokes. First of all, is any common man ever concerned about these National award stuff. If you take that so serious, you should be out of your mind...
