Keeravani get best MD award (National) for Annamayya. Why not "Guru"

Hi,

I was surprised to find that Keeravani has been awarded the best MD (National Awards). I was thinking all along that the best music to come out in 1997 was "Guru". Not b'cause I like IR but the music is very involved. Lot of effort has gone into it. I have heard the music of Annamayya and it is OK at best. Maybe the committe decided to give the award to some movie which has a classical base. BTW, Guru was also not given the best MD even when Kerala State announce the awards. Guru got some other awards in Kerala but not music. Any reactions.

  Nothing of that sort venus. I know quite a few people who thought that
  song was not good - but they were in the minority. So I just wanted to
  know if there is big crowd which feels that that song was not good. That's all.

  The discussion on this page about Ilaiyaraja and GURU being ignored by the Kerala Government
  was premature, if not prophetic. Kerala State awards were announced today. Winners in the music categories are:
  
  Best Music Director (songs): KAITHAPRAM (Song:
  "Marakkumo Neeyente.." Film: KAARUNYAM)
  Best Music Director (Background): RAJAMANI
  (Film: AARAM THAMPURAN)
  Best Male Vocalist: K.J. Yesudas (This is his
  18th Kerala award. Song: "Harimuraleeravam"
  Film: AARAM THAMPURAN)
  Best Female Vocalist: Bhavana
  (Song:"Ennodenthinee.." Film: KALIYAATTAM)
  
  GURU won the awards for Best Costume Design
  and Best Makeup.

  Telling IR didnt get an award bcas he's not a MalayaLee is somewhat
  unfortunate considering the fact that MannaDey,SalilChowdhury
  etc. are considered on par with the biggies in MFM. Also even now
  for the carnatic music oriented films Yusufali for lyrics &
  BombayRavi as MD, who aren't regulars, is considered to be a
  hit combination.
  The malayaLam movie U R mentioning is ThenmavinKombathu - Muthu in
  Thamizh, SaatRangKeSapne in Hindi; In that film, the debutant music duo
  beNy-Ignasius, used rehashed tunes of old Hindi-Tamil hits for majority
  of the songs in the film, including the Asai adhigam vachu.. tune.
  As far as my knowledge goes this film fetched the Kerala State music
  awards for this MD pair & some technical awards and thats the
  end. It hasnt got any other awards of importance...The award generated
  so much heat that one of the previous recipient returned his
  award to Govt. telling that the award has been reduced to nothing..
  
  Obviously, I'm digressing.. We cant hav discussions on MFM.. Yenda
  ivlavu sonnathukku apram ippadiyannu kekkatheenga...:-)))

  People like sivaji and IR have already been acknowledged internationally so we should'nt be whining about

  I have been hearing GURU songs and the songs from Yatra Mozhi for days together. Particularly, I am hearing Yatra Mozhi, which I have believe has gone unsung and unheard in Kerala despite being one of the finest films I have ever seen, the songs THEYMAVIN THANALIL, AND PON VEYILIL are just bring tears to my eyes. I have never heard such touching music since I heard the song Devan Thiru chabai malargale, again by Raja.
  
  I mean, Raja's brilliance is going under-appreciated in Kerala is calling for some sanity check on the music lovers or the musical judges in Kerala. How could Guru can be sidelined? I know the 50,000 rupess is sheer nonsense, but then special recognition should have been bestowed on IR for his contribution so far to Malayalam films.

  The Minaaram and Thatharam are Pure Gold.
  Melody and Music in their Pristine form.
  
  IR kills me with the Best Mallu Trio
  Kiliyoonjaal,Guru & YM.
  
  Yeri Kanal & Yaatra MoZhi are so rich in
  poignant emotions and render me speechless.
  
  I dont really care if IR gets the Award or Not..

  ARR's Minsara Kanavu was a very good album, by ARR's standards. But giving it the Natioanl Award was taking things too far. By these standards, Daler Mehendi should also get the National Award.

  I like Keeravani's songs in Telugu, but I do not have to be too unbiased to say that Guru deserved the award more than anything else.
  First of all the songs of Annamacharya are just a compilation of old keerthanas and are not original with the exception of two songs.
  Second, GURU is by far the most experimental/ innovative/ground-breaking album of 1998. Ignoring this work for anything else speaks very poorly of the selector's musical qualifications. No wonder, ARR got an award for Minsara Kanavu!!!

  strawberry-latin balle
  mana madurai-carnival etc that shows you have blalantly agreed that arr has flicked these songs
  how can an album with copied songs bag the award,
  originality comes first and not westernisation
