  haris - get your ears checked - MECHAKALYANI is Kalyani - there is absolutely no Prathi Madhyamam M2 in Nenjinile

  IsaiPriyan: IMO, most of the songs you have listed cannot really be called as based on some raga. Like, I would classify 'chinnakkannan azhaikkiraan' as Ritigowla. It's a light song but the raga saayal is clearly there.

  Angeli - I guess Haris was just expressing his opinion! Freedom of speech :-) Lets not be harsh on him...
  
  we have had these kind of conversations with haris before! I think Haris likes to place the shatjam differently and thereby comes up with a different raaga and notes. MechaKalyani, being a Sruthi bedha raga of Natabhairavi, is possible if he had placed the panchamam of MechaKalyani on the Gandharam of Natabhairavi :-) That is probably why he came up with Ma2 Pa Ma2 Pa (Kalyani) in place of the actual Ri2 Ga2 Ri2 Ga2 of NataBhairavi.
  
  But, Nenjinile is a clear NataBhairavi/SIndhuBhairavi combo song and the percussion is tuned to the shatjam of NB! Kalyani in this case is ruled out :-)

  Recently, i was able to play sivaranjani using prathimadhyamam. ( here again - shift.) s g3 m2 d2 n3 s. Again, i may be wrong. ( i would not post if i'm sure of something. whenever i (we) post, its because i'm not sure and get things confirmed for the knowledged.)

  Could anyone tell me on what raaga is the devotional song "Ayigiri Nandhini" (in praise of Goddess Durga) based on ? I also recollect Deva (??) or someone base on of his songs on this tune.

  ayigiri nandhini is in Revathi (?)
  
  baju: don't struggle too much. :) Deva used the exact tune in Periya Manushan, for a duet. (sick!)

  ayigiri nandhini has just 4 swarams:
  
  n2 s r1 g1
  
  (n2 as in n1 n2 n3)
  
  IT does not fit in any raga. But it has cast a good influence on some MDs. one example is Rehaman's "thaiya thaiya". It has the following phrase:
  
  "naan enum aaNavam aziya vaiththaai
  un kaaladiyil ennai kaniya vaiththai
  en aaradi uyaraththai abagariththaai"
  
  or in hindi
  
  "taaveez banaake pehnoon use
  aayat ki tarah mil jaayen kahi"

  MadhurAn nagaril thamizh changam - seems to take all the swarams ( except may be r1, m2 ). Are u sure its thilang?
  
  Now nobody question the quality of my ears.. i accept that god unfortunately did not tune my ears ( nor my fingers ) to fix ragas/swarams..
  but curiosity kills.

  The site http://www.aoe.vt.edu/~boppe/MUSIC/PRIMERS/kprimer.html#5 says Mechakalyaani and Natabhairavi are Grahabeda cousins.
  Visit the page and search for 'Grahabeda Groups'.
  
  Hence, there is nothing wrong in saying 'NenjinilE NenjinilE' is Mechakalyani.

  Particularly contradicting me and not any others who mentioned this. I took it personally, especially as this song has been discussed here since it came out! HARIS - check out old threads..... and the general consensus agreed with me....
  
  Whether it is a Graha Bedha or not, Natabairavhi can never be Kalyani.... If you listen to the Ragas and Krithis or even film songs, the paryogams and everything are very very different....
  
  I guess you will never agree with me on this one, hence your last post! - "Hence, there is nothing wrong in saying 'NenjinilE NenjinilE' is Mechakalyani."
  
  Haris - The reason is because the ragas can never be the same. You cannot listen to a song in Hindholam ans say that it is in Suddha Dhanyasi, technically or non technically!, unless, like Margali poove, they are purposly mixed, the same goes for Mohanam and Suddha Saveri - the SAAYAL(paryogams) of these Ragas are very different - that is what you need to understand about Graha Bhedham.
  
  Sorry for offending you, my choice of words was poor - apologies! I guess your particular 'picking' on my name about Nenjinile annoyed me.
  
  If you play the songs on keyboard, instead of listening for paryogams, it is hard, as it depends to where you fix the Sadjam. When I was really young, that was how I started to 'catch' Ragas, but as I started to listen to Carnatic music more and Krithis more, I started to pick up the Paryogas, which helps.... This was what I was trying to convey to you. The more variations on a pure Raga you here, the more trained your ear gets.
  
  HARIS: "Unnai Nanariven" from Guna is in Keeravani, if I remember the song correctly. It is in it's Hindustani form - THAT 10 KIRAVANI

  It is indeed a tricky excercise and I was pretty much surprised when Haris said he hears natabhairavi as kalyaNi. Man ! As Angeli says, atleast for me it does not sound that way ! There are some specific songs where u have this confusion of grahabedham BUT the two ragas associated in confusion have similar prayogms I guess ????
  
  Some examples:
  
  (1) sumam prathi sumam sumam (IR's telugu song from film Maharishi)
  (2) nalam vaaza - where is the Shatjam in this song ?
  
  And there is a genuine confusion in fixing the shatjam of hindolam based songs angeli. I have got lostin songs like punjai uNdu nanjai uNdu and unnaal mudiyum thambi thambi many times.
