  Gayathri: Yes, but Natabairavhi and Natakapriya can be taken as the Melakarthas for Sindhubairavhi - It takes both R1 and R2.....

  I agree that there are some Sindhubairavhi sounding Paryogams in Jiya Jale, but they are shared with Natabairavhi a lot.
  
  Do you hear any mix of Dharbari Kanada in it? I don't!
  
  Kanada and Dharbari K, both kind of come from Mela 22 KaraHarapriya, Dharbari K having D1 as well.
  
  Karaharapriya is:
  S R2 G2 M1 P D2 N2 S | S N2 D2 P M1 G2 R2 S
  
  Typical Kanada A/A is:
  From Mela 22:

  Dharbari K sounding very similar, as Sindhuja said, but with the Hindustani touch and N1 appearances in places.... It is basically the Hindustani equivalent of the Carnatic Raga Kanada.
  
  I personally can't hear the co-relation b/w these and Natabairavhi....
  
  If you could please point out the pharses in Jiya Jale, I would appreciate it, although, I still stand with my point that it is Natabairavhi, predominantly.

  Angeli: Kanada and Dharbari K, both kind of come from Mela 22 KaraHarapriya, Dharbari K having D1 as well.
  
  Dharbari Kaanada is a natabhairavi (20) Janya raga and takes dha1(only). Kaanada is a Karaharapriya Janyam 22 - Dha2. It is the Shudhdha dhaivatham that clearly distinguishes DK from Kaanada :-) Am sure you were in a hurry when you mentioned the melas :-)

  Listen to the final humming of Jiya Jale by either Latha/Janaki (esp the last 2 rendering of Jiyaaaa Jale). Does it not sound like S Bhairavi?

  Gayathri: Yes it does sound like Sindubairavhi, but, as I mentioned before, the Ragas, Sindhubairavhi and Natabairavhi have some similar paryogas. It is a debatable one and I read that Lata had been doing some improvising on the song outside, which ARR had proceeded to record - I guess she added these touches, being trained in the Hindustani fashion, where Ragas take what in Carnatic are called 'anya'(accidental) swaras.

  MS: SAR seems to like Sivaranjani more - e.g. Vaanam Paadi un vaarthail Sooryodayam in Unnidathi Ennai Koduthen and he manages a Sivaranjani per movie if possible, even in his latest movie, Anandham.
  
  None of his NBairavhi's spring to mind. Pls.
  remind me.
  
  But yes, I do like the Raga, as it is a heavy Mela which can be diluted nicely in film songs. The best example is how Harris Jeyaraj has used NATABAIRAVHI in 'VASEEGARA'

  (1) yEdho oru paattu
  (2) natchaththira jannalil
  (3) enakkoru snEgithi snEgithi
  
  He also has the great ability to churn out tunes from aabheri ( aanandhan aanandham paadum, rosaappoo), keeravaaNi (innisai paadi varum - a recyle of pOvoma oorkolam) which can be called sister ragas of natabhairavi or some of the pentatonic ragas like hindhOLam. The greatness of his music is that once you hear a song u can easily recognize it as an SAR song..oops.. that is not a compliment :-)
  
  IMO his best songs were:
  
  (1) Oh ponmaanguyil - set primarily in sudhdhadhanyaasi with ni3 peeping in occasssionally for beautification
  
  (2) aayiram thirunaaL - ( slightly malluish) - has some touches of gambeera naattai(?? sa ga ma pa ni sa) goes to yeman kalyan in the sharanam
  
  (3) sangeedha vaanil - set in SD once again.
  
  I shall stop here since it seems to be more like an analysis of his works.

  Aanandhan aanandham paadum has a lot of Sivaranjani in it.
  
  Innisai paadi varum also is a mixture of Keeravani and Sivaranjani.

  MS: it's from Aval varuvaalaa. (You won't forget this song if you have seen this song/movie :) The song is very telugu-ish - i think SAR used his telugu original tune directly. I'm also not sure about the raga.

  Kadhal oviyam sounds like Jonpuri(like Thendral vandhu theendum bothu of Devadhai)
  Madai thirandhu - Suddha Dhanyasi
  Chinna Mani Kuyile - Keervani
  Pillai Nilaa - Charukesi
  Maniye Manikkuyile - Kanada?
  Kuzhal Oodhum Kannanukku - Shankarabaranam
  Ooru sanam Thoongiduchu - Dharmavathi?
