Quick Note on Pani Thirai Song...
Note traversal order
"C# F F# G# C C#"
"C# C G# F# F C#"
root note of the scale is C#. And for melodic familiarity sake, listerners can tag it to "Gambeera Naatai" rather than with kedaram.

Satsona, thanks for your comments on my veena composition...Length of the score is 4min:42sec and it seemed very short one:-((
I don't think there's any good substitution for veena tonality...may be you could find or make some alternative tones that can evoke similar moods...Srik was kind of appreciably making such alternative sounds (Listen to Elle interludes)...But you know what it involves...GAS, Money, Time, Patience and ofcourse lots of creativity (Sound Design)...
Depending on the driving factors of interest
(commercial, academic, Hobby ) for you to make music, you can also give a try. Sometimes it's easier if you be friend of a veena player that they can simply play:-))
Anyway...who knows there are already software or keyboard which has substituted veena sound:-)) Perhaps somebody here is already using it.
Let's listen it and Enjoy as a sound in a good score.
regards,
Aditya

satsona , thanks for you comments.
One the scale change, the second line is a reply, the entire lyric is a conversation. the change in mood is highlighed by this,
i would requset you to read the lyrics you will get it.and on the sounds I use Keyboards (Triton), sound modules and percussion (roland, EMUs etc etc :) Recording was done using Protools.
Seriously after reading many posting here, it encourages us to proceed on this delicate subject. we will hope for the best. and please wish us luck :)
Aditya, imo making music is a good alternative to sleep, making music provides the needed mental relaxation from a day long work load and prepares us for the next day :):)
and on the instruments, the sound source does not matter at all, it is what you play using the sound is the key.

satsona,
Thanks for your comments.
"Pani Thirai" is about 70% Triton. The rest are soft synths. The drums are all from Triton. Very basic for this song. Recording and mixing was done in Cubase SX. I also used a lot of plugins to polish up the tracks during mixing.

Mahati thinks positive about artists in this page...
Sound source doesn't matter...We have life full of experience with it...
Some good examples that we should think...
Ramaswamy Dikshitar worked on Violin and it's indianized. Srinivas's mandolin is now part of carnatic music...Those instruments are not alien to our music because they are played as they are supposed...These instruments have not replaced anything but only an addition/alternative to play music...
Artist doesn't have to become popular because of his/her instrument/sounds/voice...perhaps it's the other way:-)) We have innumerable examples to learn about this fact in classical, light, film music.
That's why -> "Let's listen and Enjoy sounds in a good score"...I am sure Aditya means that Good Score will summarize more than just sounds:-))
You guys here are capable of producing good scores.

All,
Thanks a lot for all your appreciations and feedbacks.
Ajith,
Recording is always fun. Srikanth & Sridhar use typical Rahman approach for all their recordings. They are very good in extracting the best out of singers. They have the basic sketch ready during the start of the recording and create magical loops on the fly during the recording. They give complete freedom to singers all the time.
Srikanth just had pallavi ready for Elle before the recording and constructed rest of the melody during the recording. I think complete Elle took around 2 hrs or so. He recorded couple of songs the same day. Watch out for his classical number, it has come out very well.
Also, Watch out for Sridhar's Gam Ganapathi as well. Extremely complicated and rich melodic score.
"Pani Thirai" team, "Sweet home" team - Great job! Best wishes to you all.

Hiya Guys,
Finally, I finished that song I was working on. Please download it and give it a listen. Pump up the bass and notch up the mid frequencies :)
Let me know how it is. It was arranged on FL Studio, recorded with a laptop sound card, and processed with a WAV editing software.
Have fun.

Hi Guys..I am really impressed with the compositions that have been linked in this page.
I myself am a novice musician, I can play some western songs with chords in my keyboard. I understand the concept of a carnatic ragam. I can, to some extent, figure the raagams used by playing my keyboard for some of the favourite tamil film compositions. Ofcourse there are quiet a few that elude me.
Given my novice back ground, how do I hone my skills
1) In finding a raagam or a scale for a composition
2) What are the steps in creating a tune in a particular ragam? like what makes a good melody.
any suggestions, books to read or links on the web would really help.
Also, what are the differences between a composer, conductor and arranger?
If a conductor merely helps in playing a pre-written composition (a bach or a beethoven) then why say a Zubin Mehta is so famous. What exactly is his role?
TIA....

Eswar did you use real violin player

Attention please:
I think it will be nice to know where all guys are located in the globe. This may help each to contact better and exapnd on the projects. So if you guys are interested you may send a mail with your Name, Location, e-mail and webpage (address and phone numbers no needed). I can put this information up in a page.
Eswar:
Very nice work. The lady who has sung it seems to have a less powerful voice ( or is it intended to be so ?) Hamsdhwani ragam I think. Very nicely done. My sincere wishes for you to come with such work in future.

UV,
I used a Intel onboard one, the one I got with the laptop. Pretty low end I guess. The real credit to it goes to the GoldWave I used to notch and relieve the distortion of the recording. I used a real violin player, and just did some filter work on it. Thanks for your appreciation.
Aditya,
Thanks. As I told you she is doing college in my homeland, Cochin - Kerala.
MS,
She is a 17 year old girl, maybe that is why. It probably has something to do with my post production work too.
Thanks.

WantToLearn (It would be great if we could know your name too),
I am not sure how I could explain the way you compose music. I would suggest you listen to a lot of classical music songs/instrumental renditions and try developing skills in that. Meanwhile, whenever you get some idea, play it record it and keep it with yourself. That will help you to understand your skills. Don't worry about raagas, just concentrate on your ideas. We can build stuff on raagas later. Any gurus can comment more on it.
Thanks,
Eswar

Eswar..My name is Karthi.
So in your case how it did come about. Did you formally learn carnatic/western music. Can you for example map the melody to the notes as you listen to a song? Thanks

Eswar,
It was a pleasing work. Would you mind if I asked you a couple of things ?
What is GoldWave ? You made a note earlier that you used the regular sound card of the laptop. Well, I am not a techno, nor am I yet affected by 'GAS' (courtesy:Srikanth, and my wallet, hence, is still healthy :)). I also have a pretty similar set up : a good key board (PSR 540), an acoustic guitar, a computer and an audio input device that someone could mistake for a mike ! But, I have in mind a motley of tunes I am unable to give any shape, because of the handicap I have in understanding the recording techniques. I even bought an AWE 64 Gold sound card in ebay but I cant fix it in my PC, since it seems to be old for that kind of sound card. Now, do you mean to say that I can patch up the output with 'Goldwave' if I can record with my present set up ? The quality of recording I am able to get from my set up sounds bad to me. Also I can't get all the sounds of my keyboard either. I would appreciate a lot if you could explain in detail your recording process. Thank You.

Da Vinci,
While you wait for some good answer from Eswar...
if you have a line in on your sound card and a transducer pickup for the guitar...
Download the evaluation version of GoldWave and go from there - if you like it buy...Rock it with strums and some lead melody as whatever tunes you have...you appear to be tasteful in your listening and critic dimension, and I believe this is a good quality to eventually help you as a musician to do some good work in creating music.
Given the constraints, you may or may not have a great quality recording and many instruments...but that shouldn't stop us anybody to appreciate the music.
"Let the gadgets/software doesn't come in your creative process"...Learn them to their end if necessary.
Regards,
Aditya
