That was an emphatic way you chose to prove your point!O manju was actaully CVS's reincarnation as a substandard movie maker!(Leave out AlaigaL !)
The haunting effect brought by the violin interludes & preludes is superb and both the versions are equally good.IR's one more Nallothor veenai dumped in puzhuthi.Another case which would have strengthened IR's personal theory that lyrics ARE NOT IMPORTANT.
PS version?I don't remember seeing PS name in the titles and her version does not come in the movie either. If it is true then it is a certain coup that IR had managed so early in his career making PS,SJ,VJ sing in the same movie and the same lyrics.

In "Katriniley varum geetham", Kavitha acted in 3 different characters. The first Kavitha dies in mystery.
The title song "Katrinileyyyyyy varum geetham" was (supposedly) recorded 3 times sung by 3 different singers (PS, VJ and SJ) for 3 different Kavitha's. IR had mentioned this in his interview for "Anandha vikatan" (one of the issues of early 1978). IR said that PS' version was in a different tune singing for the Ghost character...
Versions of VJ and SJ are available in net and in CD/Cassette but PS version is not traceable. It was not included in the movie as well. May be IR can dig it out :-)
Both ‘available’ versions are good; IMO, VJ’s is mesmerizing. Wherever needed, she stretches and moulds her voice… not too much… it is just as it should be :-)

What a nice song from IR! In both songs, both singers excelled with ease. Good choice for the day. But really interested about the PS version. Here there many IR fans who can meet or contact him at necessary situations. Can anyone of them please contact and get more info (if possible, the song itself)?

It will be great if the PS version gets too posted SOTD.I think this a very rare thing attempted ever in TFM and as PS website admin you have a duty to unearth this song ASAP.Hope PS personally will also have some memories of the song to share with because of its extraordianry uniqueness. The song should go down as one of the collector's item.It is a request on behalf of all the DFers.BB should feature it for Pongal.Hope some IR fans too lend their support to get this song.
Is there any song similar by 3 male singers..say TMS,SPB,KJY?
Mannippu - had the "Nee enge" in 3 different tunes which is certainly a showcase for the MDs(SMS's) talents. How about them as SOTD?

Is it just me or is the SJ version of the SOTD blank? I am able to hear the VJ version just fine,
but not the other one.
As a first-time poster (but a long-time fan of the SOTD series), I just wanted to thank the people maintaining this list for their efforts.

Song of the Day: oLiyilE therivadhu dhEvadhaiyaa from azhagi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/oliyile.rm
- Sung by Karthik and Bhavadharini. Music by Ilayaraja.
- Shanmugam (Parthiban) who is married and has kids, comes across his classmate Dhanam working as a labourer on the streets. He saves her and tries to give her a new leash on life. Memories keep coming back to him. He remembers the day when Dhanam joined their school for the first time. He remembers how beautiful she was, and how he liked her then. She was the most beautiful girl in his class, the centre of attraction.
In one of the best flashbacks in tamil films, Thangar Bachchaan weaves a wonderful story of adolescent love. Shanmugam and other kids try to catch a glimpse of Dhanam at her coming-of-age ceremony. Luckily, he is called to Dhanam's house to help with some household work. He has to find a basket in a dark room. Trying to find his way in the dark, he realizes that Dhanam is there, sitting alone after reaching her puberty. Then, in a magical moment, Dhanam lights up a lamp and Shanmugam sees her in a whole new way. "oLiyilE therivathu dhEvadhaiyaa", he wonders! The song starts off so seamlessly, so hand in hand with the situation, that it attains a whole new dimension. I had heard it before I saw the movie, and didn't think much of it. Watching the song in the movie changed it for me.
It is as magical as "paarththa vizhi paarththa padi" from Guna, where the hero sees the heroine for the first time.
- Sadhna Sargam won a national award for "Paattuch cholli" from the same film.

I liked the Janaki's version of "Kanden Engum" song much better than Vani Jeyaram's. The echo effect in Janaki's voice in the line "Kaatrinille varum geetham" is haunting me. The opening humming and the humming in the middle of the song moves me totally. Wow!!! Janaki had the voice of a nightingale

bb,
Thanks for making this wonderful song as SOTD. You may be knowing that lyrics for this song, 'Paattuch cholli' and 'unkuthamma' are by IR.

This seems to be somewhat of a mini trend for IR songs these days. Same could be said to a certain extent for "elangaathu veesudhe" as well from Pithamagan.Didnt think much of it until after I watched the film.

bb,
Entha song apottu ennoda thukatha keduthuteengale ..I shoudl say this is one of the most apt songs for the situation ..
1.First the choice of the singers ,both less than 25 ...Both have refelcted the feeling perfectly ...Bhava's voice is just great ..
2.IR' slyrics is just amazing ..esp " ariya vayasu ...." ..Splendid .IR should have got a award for lyrics too !!!
3.he second interlude has the same patter as that of illangathu vessathu

oLiyile is one of the most beautiful soulful numbers which leaves you tired when it ends. The theme music of the film though is very reminsicent of the start of "yedho mOham", is soul stirring. Ths film is nice portrayal of a beautiful monisha (monica ? ) degenerating into a menial nandita. I earlier had used a description while chatting with Srinath (of DF) in our private conversations. I am now re-using it to describe the impact of this song on me.
When a portion of flesh in some part of the body gets exposed by, say, attrition, anything that touches the exposed flesh even mildly, evokes a complete body stir as if it were a junction of all the nerves in the body. A mild feather touch with a cool breeze and drops of water then smoothens the firy sensation that you received initially and makes you unruffled though you still the feel the tender touch deep inside you, albeit painless.
This song had exactly the same effect on me. The word "oLiyile" in the begiining was the shock, and the rest of the song that followed served as the feather touch.
