Dear Friends,
Let us vote for 'Adi Rakkamma' from THALAPATHI as our choice for the World's Top Ten Songs poll conducted by BBC!
I am suggesting this song because if in case the BBC people listen to the nominated songs, they will feel knocked out on hearing our Maestro's 150 Vioins' Strings Ensemble!
Let us all do it at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/us/features/topten/
Yours Always Musically,
Vijay.

Well written. Its time the south or rather the non-Devdas part of India got its due.
As remarked , ARR is now not the genius from south anymore. He is touted as a bollywood property. Although it doesnt take away anything from the fact that he is still an Indian,it still hurts. The true recognition of the fact that today bollywood film music is in a rot and it is south indian film music that is in trailblazing form is the competition we see in TFM.
There has not been a single genuinly talented music director from bollywood after RD. Ilayaraja and ARR are geniuses beyond compare that have spawned an entirely new generation of MDs in the south who dont hesitate to innovate. HJ, KR, YSR and of course vidyasagar are involved in a contest where they would impale any other MD in the whole of india..(there would probably be a few exceptions of course..like a few mallu MDs who are brilliant with classical based film songs).
I am hoping this paves the way for more recognition of the fact that the south indian film music scene is hot.
Also, as I had remarked in one of my earlier posts, Vande Mataram is a very good composition indeed. It revitalised our national pride among the youth. But as far as innovation in music goes, Rakamma is a pioneer. Even today, when I hear of the violins in the song, it fascinates me to think of the genius of the MD who envisioned it.
Also, Sundari in Dalapathy is a landmark composition that might appeal to the so-called purists of western classical music. It is an amalgamation of southern tunes with western classical overtones. Its brilliant.
And yes, for ARR fans, who think IR fans are making a hue and cry about something..well..yes..but I am damn sure if VM had been 1 and Rakkamma 5, the ARR camp actions would have been worse.
I hate it when I have to use the IR and ARR camp references in my posting, but then I had no choice.
I am happy that two Indians (tfmds at that) have created a furore in the bbc polls.
I personally feel Irs composition is better.I dont think personal grievances, bad blood and what not should cloud once decision in choosing a better song. After all, if we claim to be true music fans, it is the song and its appeal that matters. Not the MD who did it..is it ?
I still think "En Kaadhale" in Duet is an all time classic and ARRs compositions at times are world class. But that doesnt mean, I refuse to accept the true genius that is IR.Lets give the man his true due this time..

They are good for sure.
Personally Hotel California is a favorite of mine. But spell-binding no. Good listening-definitely.
Anywhere close to Rakkamma or VM- absolutely not.
PS : Opinions differ.

I don't think Rakkamma kaiya thatu is the best IR song. But I do'nt see, why it can not be voted as no one song.
I have listened to all other songs currently in the top 10, except the cliff richards song.
To me, personally it is a better song.
What is so great about the song imagine or yesterday?. Though beatles songs were good, but all of them have very short tunes. Most of the songs were just few lines repeated umpteen number of times.
It is just like our MDS compose few lines for pallavi and fill the whole song with it, with out any saranam.
If our composers followed this method, they could have composed thousand of songs more.
This is true for most of the english songs, where tunes are few catchy lines put in a ear-friendly package.
I do not want take anything away from western musicians. But I do not subscribe to the view that always english/western songs are much better than Indian/Tamil songs.

Having read words of wisdom from WN, Suresh, Are Yaar and musicfan, I have come to the conclusion that all of us regardless of who's fan we are, must vote for Rakama kaiya thattu.
It will be nice to have Tamil recognised for a change.
But that does not stop us from voting VM for the no. 2 position.
Hail IR. Hail ARR!

Any song of IR has got several levels of appeal. There is no way an western pop or rock song can better IR' musical ideas. There are of course some classic stuff from Leppard, Elton John, DIre Straits, but u can see their stuff appearing in some form or the other in IR' interlude works. IR's instrumental portions of songs follow an entirely different idiom than the song tunes themselves. So, that is the appeal, tune, instrumental pieces, rhythm and then surprise twists that keep you engaged all the time througouth the song not any much for the 'recording quality' than it is for the twists and turns.
Rakkamma he has put some verve that he thought it fit for the song and the situation or the director and actor. I personally like Putham Pudhu Poovu Idhu as an extraordinary composition. Sundari Kannal is not so strong tune as above but the interludes kicks Star Wars movie themes out of reckonin! Amazing stuff not exploited enuff by our undimensional film makers.
I have heard a lot about Stairway to Heaven, even heard it a couple of times, but did not grab me too much as would a Money for Nothing type or Rocket-Man or Super-Trouper. Hotel California is certainly a classic classic, but Eagles had only a few other hits and that not at the level of HC.
Beatles was pure right time and right place and appropriate stuff for the times. Those guys were just late teens when they started it all and that amazes me. Their lyrics were so beyond their age and times too. Tunes (as pointed out short, effective but sweet ) were original - especially Hey Jude is a classic beyond doubt. But other stuff, i would say not that Sankar-Ganesh did not do those!
Rahman is over-hyped for the benefit of webber. I was a fan of Rahman, but he dropped once I caught up with many songs of IR! Maybe Rahman is as good as the Beatles but not good enuff.
Anyway, Rakkamma has to stay on top that is the goal and definitely our sloppy record companies are going to cash in on this. Too bad, Sony went with Rahman!
I am a big fan of Western music overall and they are perfectionists and precisionist not adventurists and experimentalist - only Philip Glass was!!!!! Their songs suit almost all ocassion and our composers really have not thought of songs for social ocassions, we've to rely on Western songs!!!!!! For instance, Christmas carols, Wedding songs, Party events and so on.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/us/features/topten/feedback/
Yesterday, The Beatles
Why: It reminds me of my late brother Andrew who used to play it during his school holidays. The songs of the Beatles were like a national anthem in our home.Sylvia, Zambia
Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu, S.P.Balasubramainam and Swarnalatha
Why: Mind blowing orchestration from India's greatest composer.Vignesh, Netherlands
Nothing compares 2 U, Sinead O'Connor
Why: Beautiful song, brings tears to my eyes every time.Natalie, UK
Can anyone see the mystifying juxtaposition of the feedback? Ironical heh?

People like archivist and his comments are the cause of IR hatred by ARR fans.
I am beginning not to blame hard core ARR fans for ditching the Tamil song.
Well, let's see how much of such nonsense we can tolerate.

Tamil recognised by TAMIL is no big deal.We have grown up with this attitude.
If Westerners say X is great and you also like X -"VeLLakarene Solittan"
If westerners say X is great but you do not like X, "These westerners do not know the intricacies, value, blah, blah""Britain is smaller than Tirunelveli district"."American population is lesser than South Arcot population" etc..
Still i feel propping up a Tamil song like this (BBC Poll)is not the best way to promote.Recognition should be spantaneous from the other side and sustainable.
"Padhaviyum,Pugazhum thana thedi varanum."
By the end we would have only established our
1. Numerical superiority
2. Enmass voting pattern (Methods used by the likes of Ram vilas Paswan!)
Unless BBC Poll establishes the right spread in the voting pattern across the globe the win would prove nothing.I am sure a song like "Imagine" would get votes from Philipines to Dubai to San Francisco without factors like nation ,caste, religionr as music transcends these issues. But votes from Vignesh from Netherlands,Venkatasubramanainam from Chennai,Velmurugan from Kansas -the common denominator is something other than music.
Amitabh became the Actor of the Century by similar polls - Not Newman -Heston -Marlon Brando-Al Pacino-Balraj Sahani-Sivaji-SV RengaRao ..It is Amitabh, your Own Vijay ,wearing checked coats having direct conversations with God ,tirelessly playing Robin hood again and again with a borrowed marathi accent.Well ..what has this established? Nothing but systmatic enmass voting by our bhais, bhaiyyas, banias and baradwajs.
Yes,Suresh ..I am ready for your AK-56.(But have not i used a B-52?)

I wish in the next Olympics we should be allowed to vote for the best athelete rather than athletes settling it out on the track and field.
