I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Neel/Priya yes, 'Mazhaikkaalam varukindrathu' was also for JJ. Doesn't it start with MSV's thogaiyra 'Thirisoolam sathiyam, pulitholil thathuvam'? Nice song.
Naaz, 'Sippiylile muthu athu sippikkenna sondham, thennayile ilaneer athu thennaikkenna sondham' is quite a good song, I thought! Reg. its picturisation- Due to Sivaji's hallucinations, his niece (the precocious child you mentioned) gets lost. So when he learns that his wife JJ is expecting their child, he insists that when it is born, he will hand it over to his sister to make up for their loss. It is at this juncture that JJ sings this song. Good lyrics and expressive singing by VJ. (Terrible film, I agree!)

Saravanan -
I only said MSV-VJ have had "better" songs together. Sippiyile Muthu remains a good song, I agree.
Digression: Did Pandari Bai play Sivaji's sister in the film? (or was that some other film?)
Such a long way for them from Andha Naal...and yet he still got to be hero and she was shunted to Akka Anni Adhuthaathu Mami sort of roles.
Need to vent: Just happened to see Devdas at a local theatre this evening. It sets an entirely new level for cinematic kitsch. I am yet to see a more gaudy, melodramatic and completely pointless exercise in film making. The art direction is so drenched in gold and red you begin to squint halfway through the film. The women (including extras) are so saddled with trinkets and diamonds that they're walking jewellery marts. Everything, including the camera angles if you can believe it, is loud about the movie. Monty, who gets special credit for BGM, never lets up - if its not "de re na de re na thathom thathom ad nauseum" chorus, it is noise. After sometime you forget which is which. Which in itself can be considered an unintentional blessing. Ismail Darbar's tunes (Mar Dala is well-picuturised,)also get lost in the maze of brocades and silk, while Rai and Dixit turn acting into a shopping spree. And they buy lipstick. Tons and tons of it. So much so that it makes you look at women of pre-independent India in a whole new "so-glam" light. Khan does what he does best, which is to give yet another reprisal of an earlier (already) reprised performance. It's called being in "syndication." Not that he cares if you don't get it. He's set.
Poor Sarat Chandra Chaterjee. He knew he'd written a pop-sap-classic of a novel,I am sure. A Feudal-Caste-Romance, pulpy and popular. And at least communally authentic. One of the main reasons why he was lapped up by the bengali bourgeoisie.
But even he - commercial and serialised as he was - could he have envisioned his Devdas being turned into such gilt soaked drivel.
Given the Sanjay Leela Bansalis (the director)addiction to anything ochre, one can only be thankful he held back from calling the film Midas.
(Oh, that felt good. Sorry for any inconvenience :-))

Naaz,
devdas is meant for Pop generation used to designer weddings. be thankful that Vr did not sing for Devdas.
You should see SL Bansali 's interviews - he is there in all channels-he purrs like a contented cat after slurrping milk. But one thing though he has such intensity in his eyes as he speaks he probably would have made a better Devdas Than Sharrukh "Stammerer- Shaggy Dog look" Khan.
SL Bansali & Our own Rajeev Menon are so full of gas They make stylised nonsense.
I couldn't resist replying.

Coming back to this thread I'll finish with a question.
Didn't Anbai Thedi have the " chitira mandabathil sila muthukkal serthu veithen" number?

Naaz, Vijayakumari played Sivaji's Akka in Anbai Thedi. Your query set me thinking about Vijayakumari's roles in Sivaji starrers- all possible relationships-- she has played the role of his daughter in Paar magaley paar, his younger sister in Pachai Vilakku, the girl who loves him (but doesn't get married to him) in Kungumam, the girl whose husband he's forced to act as, in Shanthi, his wife in Rajaraja Chozhan and his elder sister in Anbai thedi. Thank God she didn't get to play his mother!
Vengayam, yes Chithirai mandapathil (TMS-JJ) is also from AT. Other songs are 'Budhi ketta ponnu'-TMS-PS and 'Appavum Ammavum'-Pushpalatha, for Naaz's favourite Precocious child!

Hello friends,
Is the song "Gouri manohariyai kanden oru adavan vadivaththile" by VJ, SPB available? I do not remember seeing it in VJ.com. This lyric of the song is incredible anyday u listen to it.
The song is from the film "mazhalai pattalam". The film has another terrific SPB song "Thallu madal vandi idhu thalli vidungo"

Thanks for the rejoinder. Have you seen the film yourself? What is the indian critical response?
I am not entirely certain if I understand what you mean by "stylised." In my understanding of the word it means "conforming to a particular artisitic convention." The only artisitc convention that I could spot in Devdas was the relentless (and) vulgar display of fake gold...and more of it.
For a true example of "sytlised" cinema you might want to check Shyam Benegal's "Kalyug" (subtle ostentation) or his "Mandi" or Girish Karnad's "Utsav." If "Wealth" is the motif, or "power" is the tone, these films I've mentioned manage a fine balance. effectively. Art direction is the base of "stylisation." Devdas lacks both - art and direction. It's true - All that glitters, as they say...
SLB might have thought all the dazzle would be enough to make us feel rich again. Alas, it just numbs the brain and hurts the eyes.
Sore. Bore.
Saravanan -
I am wondering which film had Pandari Bai and Sivaji, where she plays his anni or akka...Any ideas? I distinctly remember one such film (and the subsequent irony with it.)
VJ also had two songs in Sri Priya's directorial debut Shanti Muhurtham. Could you please jog my memory with the first lines of those songs, if you can recall them?
Sivaselam - Gowri Manohari is a memorable song. Neel, take note :-)

Back in these hallowed grounds again ! I'm pleased that Naaz is back. And I am also glad that there are some new faces that add sheen to this forum. My greetings to you all. Special thanks to Neel for all the VJ songs on his site.
Neel, I have a song request too. Can you add "Dhevi Koondhalo Brindhavanam" from "En Aasai Unnodu Thaan" ? Such a lovely duet...

Another good example of stylisation is Ketan Mehta's Mirch Masala. Or Kundan Shah's Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.
(end digression.) Both commercially and critically successful films.

Naaz,
One of the duets (I think it is SNS & VJ) in Shanthi Muhurtham goes like this:
Mazhaiyae en meedhu thoovaathae..
Nanaidhaal en ullam thaangaathae...

Naaz,
I forgot to mention there was an excellent song by Jeyachandran in Shanthi Muhurtham...(Mounamae Mounamae en udan paadavaa..ezhai en vitilae pournami pol nee vaa...)

vgs,
Devi koondhalo brindavanam was an excellent duet..Very melodious...
Does anybody remember a duet by VJ & KJY in the movie Puthiyavan? (Murali, Anitha & Ravindhar). The movie had excellent songs..Music was by V. S. Narasimhan..Lots of good male solos...

Now I can recall the songs, thanks to you! Another breezy duet I've been revisiting lately is the TMS-VJ hit from (Panakkara Penn? Kudumbam?):
"Naal Nalla Naal, Un Idhazhil Yezhudhum Iniya Kavidhai Inbaththaen Sindhum Naal"
The "lalala" bit by VJ in the song is quite alluring. A hummable gem.

Priya, I do remember "Thaen Mazhaiyile" by SPB and "Naano Kan Paarthaen" by KJY, great solos, but unfortunately I do not remember the duet you mentioned. I'm sure somebody else has the answer.

Some rare duets of VJ with Jayachandran have been uploaded. Happy listening!
Speaking of "Pudhiyavan", there is a movie called "Pudhiya Manithan" with a VJ-SPB duet - "nAn solla vanthEn nalamAna sEthi". I came across this song on radio.
vgs, I don't think I have "Devi Koondhalo". If I find it I will certainly upload it.
Naaz/YVSM, I am still working on your requests. They are poor recordings from LPs and I have a hard time cleaning them up. In a few more days I will have them uploaded.

Thank you for that qualitative addition of VJ-PJC duets. What can one add to what has already been said about songs like Poonthendrale (class fade-out) and Vasanthakala Nadhigalile and Paadu Thendrale...
It's a privilege to listen to such singing and mastery.
Take your time with my requests...I know it is easier to request than to do all the dirtywork to make things happen...and you are doing an amazing job so far.
Take a break. Chill. Listen to songs from
www.vanijayaram.com !

Naaz, re. your querry. Nopes I have not seen the movie. I would n't see it in a hurry.Critical response is rather confused a bit of this & that. serious critics are all dead & gone (or are silent people like Iqbal masud, Ameeta Mallik ,etc)
you are refering to style as in direction I am refering to the movie as a packaging. Good sets, good clothes, breathtaking vistas .
The operative word is nonsense. you went for the stylised part. (that is why i gave the example of Minsara Kanavu Rajeev Menon - extended ad look but no soul)
Avr,
I do agree Songs are good - a good comeback for Dabrar after "tera jaadu naa chala"
