Dear Friends,
Let us vote for 'Adi Rakkamma' from THALAPATHI as our choice for the World's Top Ten Songs poll conducted by BBC!
I am suggesting this song because if in case the BBC people listen to the nominated songs, they will feel knocked out on hearing our Maestro's 150 Vioins' Strings Ensemble!
Let us all do it at:

Yours Always Musically,
Vijay.

>>>At the same time why should we be so fond of making an indian to win and hence go for consolidation of vote etc? Its music right
Agreed 100%. See, I too don't consider these voting business and all. Its all like our newtfmpage music chart.
But, having said that, in some corner of my heart I have a aasai that one day an Indian should be at the top. Be it Anu Malik also, I don't mind.
ARR, I thought would become a good consenses candidate here has he has fans all over India and he is not that bad. So, I suggested his name. I will be more that happy if IR gets the recognition that he deserves, but I have a feeling that IR is constantly digging his own pit and enjoys being there for ever. You can't talk all sorts of philosophys and try for fame in this materialistic world.
ARR knows the market well and has the urge to be in the top. He might be less knowledgable that IR (in terms of overall music knowledge and experience) but he is sure to touch heights that many have never dared to even stare upon.
Okay..leave it...I will be happy if Britney Speres doen't get that one.

Vijay, amazing! Raakkamma is a good pick, though not my least favorite choice for the purpose, but the right for the audience to be blown away by the prelude alone! It is easy also, because I am going crazy thinking of the 2000 odd hit songs what should be mentioned as a suitable choice.
I've sent emails to friends and family! This is interesting. but why did SPB and Swarnalata' name figure is what i can't understand.

archivist,
I feel that foriegners give importance more to voice(singers) than composers..In most of the cases composer and singer will be the same in english songs...and moreover they(BBC) might have expected MJ,Beatles etc to be voted as the best..
let us all send the link to everybody and the name of the song too..without any spelling mistake..

I also believe :"Yeh Oraariyaram" from Meendum Kokila is also another choice for a second IR in the top 10!!!!! That SPB voice and emotion and the mood plus the dramatic and sweeping interludes has no parallel ever.
SO, PLEASE VOTE FOR A SECOND SONG ALSO OF IR IN THE TOP 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PEEPS: NOT IN MOST CASES, BANDS PLAY SOME UNKNOWN COMPOSER' TUNES, EXCEPTION WERE FEW LIKE EAGLES, BEATLES, SIMON GARFUNKEL, ABBA, ETC...
AGAIN, SECOND SONG TO VOTE FOR: MORE FASCINATING THAN ANY CLIFF RICHARD AND BEATLES SONG IS:
"YEH ORAAYIRAM" FROM MEENDUM KOKILA

I personally have always felt that IR really hit perfection with andhi mazhai-what a song-this should have been the nominated song.what beatles...?let them try compossing one song like this!
that ''jangu chakku jajaku chakku ...''chorus -i have always felt a bit grating.but no second question about the tune and the orchestration-and the majestic voice of SPB!

Udhaya,
i have already listened to the english translation of this song when i was in the college and had gone to one culturals. But im not sure whether that was a bonafide translation or a translation by some other groups for fun(groups like college students, leoni etc).

If there is a second choice, it should be 'Andhi Mazhai' from RaajaPaarvai. A tamil song in all its beauty, emotions, orchestration, excellent singing and superb lyrics. Can't imagine the feeling if and when this song is played in a world stage.

Congrats Vijay! atlast some results after all your hard work!!
That explosive start for a prelude is the selling point of "Rakkamma" and indeed the melody for the vocals pales in comparison to it, notwithstanding SPB. The jarring "jangu jakku" part was a let down. Poonkathave and Ilamayenum poongaatru should have filled the gaps.
Anywayz, great that it's No.1

Vijay: You deserve it more than fans of IR or even IR himself. You know why? Because you are the most enthusiastic and sincere and cheerful fan of music that I've observed thus far! This is an accomplishment, I did not even think anyone would've cared to vote leave alone go by your choice!!!!! Uthaman (you are the man!)

I think we should all vote - not because we all believe that this is the best ever - but definitely Indian popular music has not received the accolades and fame it deserves. Let us NOT get divided into IR fans vs. ARR fans at this stage. Honestly, the victory of Raakkammaa Kaiya thattu will do more good to Indian pop music than for IR, or IR fans. And ARR is already in a position where he doesn't need this recognition now. Having a motivated IR and ARR trying to do their best will benefit all of us in the long run.

HOT NEWS
Illayaraja foot-tapper leads BBC World Service Top 10
Adi Rakamma featured in Dalapati, Mani Ratnam's runaway hit of the Nineties
Adi Rakkamma, kaiya thattu, the foot-tapper rendered by S P Balasubramaniam and Swarnalatha, from Mani Ratnam's Tamil megahit Dalapati, starring Rajnikanth, leads BBC World Service's Top Ten list for the 70th anniversary celebrations.
Illayaraja scored the music for the film, a runaway hit in the Nineties.
Also on the Top Ten list, based on entries from 112 countries, are two other Indian songs. One is Vande Mataram, composed and sung by A R Rahman, at the fifth slot. Another Rahman-scorer Chaiyya chaiyya is at the seventh place.
The Indian three are from among the 1,000-odd songs in pop and rap, Western classical and African tribals listed in thousands of votes that have thus far been recorded.
The final list will be run by BBC World Service December 21, according to a BBC release.
