Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Neel D,
'neeraada nEram nalla nEram' from Vaira nenjam is strictly not a night club song and it qualifies as a 'bathing song', if at all there is one such category!!!

Saravanan,
Some more trivia about 1977 and spectacles! I think Rajini wore a big specs for the first time(Many years later, Goundamani wisecracks in a film " AeNda, bussukku pOdaRa kaNNaadiyellaam maattittu vareenga?!!") in 'Aayiram JenmangaL' a 'pEy' film, remade from' Yakshagaanam' of Malayalam!
I only wish I were more conversant with English poetry, an area which I deliberately ignored in school, only to regret it today! After all, if one can appreciate poetry in Tamil/Hindi, it should be easy to cross the seven seas, as it were!

Saravanan,
Pl. visit the thread 'Extremely rare songs'. I have posted a small query in that. (I don't know if it has already gone into Archives!)

on: Mon Sep 16 08:54:39 EDT 2002
SK,Naaz - nAn chinna pAppA is from the movie "Kadamai". Dont know who the MD is. I also posted another song "Asai rAjA" from the same movie under MoreTamil section, if that rings a bell. (Saravanan, any idea?). VJ has sung quite a few songs for Silk, Anuradha, etc. which never got any air time.

Neel D -
Finally managed to download the songs. The site was jammed all morning it seems.
Devi Vandha Neram will easily make the 10 Best of S-G list. An simple, moving and beutiful duet. VJ-SPB prove their class in this one again. It was the same Tirupur Mani of Vandichchakaram who gave VJ her her last outing in TFM - the duet "Edhu Sugam Sugam Adhu" from Vandicholai Cinnarasu with SPB. And who can forget VJs solo "Ennulil Yengo" from TM's Rosappu Ravikkaikari?
Whenever I listen this Devi duet, I am reminded of a solo by SPB (for SG) from Arththamulla Asaigal (?) - "Kadalodu Nadhikenna Kobam, Kathal Kavi Pada Vizhikenna Nanam." Another lost SG original.
Upon hearing the song today I could not help but notice that while one expects good pronunciation from VJ, her style has a distinct clarity. In just the first line of her entry in the song "Devi Vandha Neram Selvam Thedamal Thanaga Serum" she makes you see the dots on "m" at the ending of the each word - Neram, Selvam, Serum - which emphasises the Meter of the verse, the music within each syllable. The merging with SPBs voice at "Kannum Nenjum Ondrai Inba Gangaiyil Adida Vandhaen" - you can feel the rush - of both vision and heart - in the eagerness of the beloved in joining the lover. And such a divine musical sangamam it indeed it, when the singers are in sync with feeling and grace. A perfect duet.

Susi,
Anbu thalaivan kaladi chuvattil...is from Kadavulin Theerppu sung by TMS-VJ. Beautifully composed by R.Govardhanam a song which was behind times one resesmbling many of MSV's late sixties. The movie was released in mid 80s.

Listen to the song " Teri meharbaaniyaan, teri qadardaaniyaan, qurbaan
tujh pe meri kaee zindagaaniyaan". A creation of the unmatchable tragic
sensibilities of Lakshmikaant-pyaarelaal. And rendered by the one pointed
talent of Shabeer Kumaar. Experience the incisive pain, that so forcefully
captivates the imagination of any sensitive listener that the entire
existence is reduced to nothing more than a lingering sense of heart-wringing
tragedy. Each and every moment of the this tragical is so filled with pain
and restlessness that at the end of the song one is compelled to sense
that there is nothing in the very existence but hollowness, misery and
and injustice.
Experience the most pungent laments of shehnaai at the outset. Experience
each and every moment of this tragical song and tell if it could have been
more striking, more lacerating?

Neel D -
Thanks for the Sankarabharanam classics. SJs "Samajavaragamana" was perhaps one Telugu film song which could be heard at all kalyana chatarams in those days. I still find it to be soothing, even though I have goose flesh everytime I listen to it and "Manasa" from that movie. Says a lot about the songs, and their timeless appeal!
Outsider - thanks for the post. I am a little puzzled about the context though. What were you alluding to with the Teri Meherbaniyan example? Was it a response to an earlier post? Or was it just a tangent?
Susi -
Have you listened to the VJ interview on Neel Ds webpage? You have not posted any comments on it, so just wondering...Also, how do you manage to store so many rare songs by VJ in your memory? Do you actually have these numbers? Would sharing be a possibility :-)? Keep those lists coming!
