Continuing on the GKV retrospective:
“ Do you mean to say that only a couple of MDs have the requisite capabilities to compose songs for Tamil films? I can’t understand why it is impossible for any other MD to get a firm foothold in tfm” GKV is said to have vented his frustration thus in the course of an interview sometime in the beginning of the 70s. Quite natural for someone, who despite being associated with tfm since the late 40s, and despite notching significant successes repeatedly in kfm throughout the 60s, found patronage still not forthcoming in tfm.
In Kannada, GKV was enjoying a cult status, with his songs becoming immensely popular. His works in films like Devara Makkalu-1970, Kasturi Nivasa- both 1970, Bala Bandhana, Taayi Devaru, Pratidhwani- all 1971, Bangarada Manushya- 1972, Doorada Betta, Sampathige Savaal, Bhakta Kumbhara-all 1973, elicited rave reviews.
It was towards the last years of the 60s that GKV took under his fold a young talented musician called Raja. (Originally Rasiah, later to blossom into Ilaiyaraja) Raja, whose soul was soaked in music, had his skills polished and trained by Dhanraj Master, an acknowledged genius. GKV recognized the innate talents in him, and admitted him in his troupe, where Raja quickly justified the trust that GKV placed in him. Another gifted musician who was assisting GKV during the same period was L Vaidhiyanathan.
In spite of the popularity of the songs of Sabatham, GKV was not flooded with offers in tfm. His next opportunity in Tamil came again from P Madhavan, who had been impressed with GKV’s work in Sabatham. When P Madhavan turned producer under his banner ‘Arun Prasad Movies’, he called GKV to compose music for his film Ponukku Thanga Manasu-1973. (Directed by Devaraj-Mohan under P Madhavan’s supervision)
PTM starred Sivakumar, Jayachitra, Vijayakumar (debut), Vidhubala and others. It was an interesting story of two college mates (Jayachitra & Vidhubala) who were once inseparable, falling out due to ego problems and marrying two friends (Sivakumar & Vijayakumar) who, also by a similar quirk of fate, have drifted apart due a misunderstanding. Later when JC finds that Sivakumar’s new boss happens to be VK, she takes a vow to see her husband rise to a higher level. She works determinedly towards it, and of course, succeeds in the end. To add to the happiness, all clouds of distrust with VK and Vidhubala get cleared. All is well that ends well.
The film was an impressive success, and GKV had contributed to it in no small measure:
Penullamae ponnaanadhadhu -PS & LRE. Lyrics: Poovai Senguttuvan
Then sindhudhe vaanam- SPB & SJ. Lyrics: Kannadasan
Neram iravu neram- LRE. Lyrics: Kannadasan
Thanjaavooru seemailyilae- SG, SJ, BSS & chorus. Lyrics: Muthulingam(his first song)
All the songs are repeatedly featured in AIR’s Listener’s Choice to this day. ‘Then sindhudhae vaanam’ is a song that ensures forever that GKV will be saluted with awe in the chronicles of tfm. I have often heard that it was actually IR who composed this song, and I raised this doubt while talking to PBS. “Oh no, I can vouch that the Kannada original was entirely a GKV creation” he replied promptly.
Every bit, every note, every moment of the song is spellbinding. A wondrous creation.
With such a bewitching opening line as ‘Then sindhudhe vaanam’, that summons vistas of a rain-drenched evening--where the showers beckon the lovers-- where the monsoon waves its magical wand--where the love-stricken hearts are afire with desire within, whilst all is damp and cold without, where few tremulous words of love are shyly whispered, while most of those exciting feelings remain forcibly withheld---
P Madhavan (and Devaraj-Mohan) had sufficient inspiration to come up with a stunning visual sequence. Alas, it is a matter of eternal regret that they were completely bereft of imagination to do justice to this song sculpted to perfection by Kannadasan, GKV, SPB and SJ. The rains fall all right—but through a leaking roof! Sivakumar, clad in banian and lungi, looks on, as Jayachitra, the owner of the house where he is a tenant, is busy mopping up the water that has flooded into the room. And even when he fantasizes of romancing with JC, his facial contortions befitted the agony of someone in the throes of some unbearable pain!
A famine--- in such a fertile field : -(
Yet, that does take away the spotlight from GKV, as he shines in his finest hour.
Listen on to his best song ever--

Thanks BB!
This is one of my all-time favorite song. The song just takes me over every time I listen to it.
Th melody line (esp. the charanam) is mind blowing.

Saravanan,
I felt this song had the distinct touch of GK Venkatesh. It wouldn't be difficult for a good listener to identify the composer of this song to be the same person who composed 'Thoduvathenna...'. The style, I felt, is more 'MSV'ish (if it needed comparison) than anything to resemble of Ilayaraja.
You know what, listening to these songs invariably brings in my mind my childhood days when these songs were played through the transistors. It is not the sound quality of the songs but the impression they created unconsciously in my mind, I believe, that make such an association.

Excellent song. The melody shows GKV's mastery of the ghazal format. Tabla work is exquisite especially during the charanam.
The melody is so very unworldly. The only other melody that comes to my mind is Naan pesa vandhaen sollathan o varthai illai.
Arrangement shows new idioms, which show good
familiarity with Western classical music writing.
The following touches are worth study:
-Sitar/veenai(?) in the prelude and during second interlude
-first interlude's key change, dueting flutes and jazzy flute and the string section lead into first charanam.
-The melody that rounds up the charanam - Kondaduthae sugam sugam paruvangal vaazhga
which uses repetition and turn around and creates a nice expression of emotional longing.
-Second interlude's (AnandShankar inspired?) pizzicato-veena-flute-hihat section built entirely using short motifs, not longdrawn solo melody.
As I was listening to the second charanam, I felt the song was coming to an end and was so short, there came a bonus third charanam!
Then I realized that the song format itself is interesting. Male sings pallavi and charanam and then girl comes in and sings pallavi and charanam and the third charanam is sung as a line-for-line duet. It gives a nice feeling a love felt, stated, responded and lived together story line in three minutes. Shows how composers and lyric writers used to think afresh and create song structures with soul.

I am extremely sorry for intruding-this song was actually done by IR when he was GKV asst.I read this long time back in a magazine.this was done with full blessings of GKV.In fact there was another song in that movie which goes like thaavi vandha ponniamma or something done by IR as well. This was recycled by IR into the title song for Enga ooru pattukkaran. In fact this song(then sindhudhe)I have always thought was a classic IR number. All this long time before annakili.

there are only few songs that are comparable to this one in terms of sweetness, beauty and sustenance of joy. (the one song that comes to my mind immediately is "geethA sangeethA..." - both in the same raagam!! ).
bb: is this the song for the weekend?! (please say yes :-) )

yaaro, apparently not. Many people in the industry including PBS have clarified that this song was GKV's original work.
AruL, no, it is not :) I have a song lined up for tonight :)

Every silver lining has a dark cloud........Sivakumar confirmed his status as a "Kadhal villain" in this extraordinary song!JC was the hero of this movie and as usual Sivakumar played the 7th yard of heroine's saree! The movie was a resounding success those days.Despite the mediocrity personfied actors the movie did have a story line & was well scripted. But picturisation was equally bad for "Neram iravu neram" too.
The song bringsforth once more talents the "akshya pathram"SPB.GKV-MSV-IR-GA-SG-ARR-VB-KVM-Deva-Hamsalekha-Sivaji Raja-Ramesh naidu-shyam-.......Yellarukkum the pathiram had something to offer.

Yaaro, Thanjavooru seemaiyilae is an age-old folk song.
And I too suspect that this song's arrangement is done or at least polished by IR, because of the sophisticated harmony in the preludes and interludes. (I know Udhaya might jump on me right now for saying this!).
I may be wrong, because I have not heard any GKV prior to Raja association, which might have this richness of arrangement.
In any case, what is more important is talented genius-es working together to create masterpieces. Recent listening to Punnagai Mannan I suspected arrangement/production contributions from you-know-who too. Unfortunately, tamil/indian industry is too ego-istic to acknowledge team work, which prevents from more team work from happening. And composers hide their sources, creating an illusion that every song is a suyambu (what is the english for this - origin-al?). Rahman has done a lot by crediting the musicians openly and Karthick has done a lot by finding and publishing some sources!
