aditya i heard the track idea was cool,
instead of just talking about plus points i will take the liberty of suggesting few things.
You can take this to par with scores like arabian nights theme by Disney. Basically, bottom line is the piano theme needs to change with the song. I dont hear a chord progression, might be i have missed something, just concentrate on progression to make it clear. Right now the piano part does not change while songs moves around. it will match if chords moves properly with melody.and focus more on instrumentation also. Just few tweaks will take you there. try Vocals with needs some basic reverb. If you have protools LE use the dverb- plate settings.

Srikanth, suggestions from a musician like you is always something that's thoughtful...I really have taken some of your suggestions seriously... as i said this is just a rehearsal version, some of the tracks and effects stay mute...Piano theme in the final version will not be looped this way...it will move around the melody...Although I be formal elsewhere, with the friends and in this thread, I sometimes take some liberties...
Thanks for your patience and encouraging commments.
Regards,
Aditya

Hello All,
A guitar Alaap in another pentatonic Raaga, fits the guitar quite well..this is Janya 22. Something pushed me to do it in this raaga....its on my web-site..

I hope you will enjoy this one....

Divakar, it's very soothing and nice...the way you played is good. Whatever pushed you to do this alaap...
Root note of the scale is modally shift and hence this is not sounding like abhogi or rather janya of 22 melakartha. Your ragaalap sounds like hindusthani kalavathi or Valaji which is ofcourse pentatonic scale and janya of 16 melakartha chakravakam. I don't know if it was intended or not...It's my pleasure to enjoy your music.
Keep it going...
Regards,
Aditya

Kalavathi I guess has six notes...I am not sure..but Valaci it sounds like (I dont feel that way but you may be right) is may be because if you notice the songs two guitars are playing, one plays the lead Alaap and the other with the piano traverses the chords, I guess I use the F chord (with respect to the Raga if written in note C, in my song it will be G# Major chord)too much as bass but I still think it shouldnt change the mood of the Raga....guess i should restrict the use of F chord may be.....
Thanks for pointing out....it helps me!

Divakar, average listener mind ( like mine ) is not restricted about any scales in particular and perhaps sometimes they come in handy for them as some melodic familiarity...if maintaining carnatic scale in melody is needed ever, then the chords should be careful enough not to shift modally unless intentionally done.
Grahabedam is the phenomenon! Your alaap sounds like Valaji( carnatic ) which is also popular in hindusthani as Kalavathi. Carnatic Kalavathi adds rishabham in the avarohan of Valaji scale...
Anyway I like it as Valaji itself...I am not any fanatic of Abhogi or any particular scale:-))
Keep Going! You have some more nice work coming along in future...Look forward to it.
Regards,
Aditya

Divakar,
Beautiful alaap!!!! I'm very impressed by the way you have played it. The effect is very soothing.
Aditya,
Getting into the spirit of this, if it is not too much to ask, could you come up with a veena based composition sometime.
Thanks

I just listened to your recent compositions on mp3.com. Hello keeravani is good. But I had a thought and an impression. Impression: I had an impression that the raga was not fully exploited, perhaps because the piece was short (the pallavi being repeated) and didn't provide room for a lot of exploration. But of course the guitar was good. Thought: I imagined this song with a slower tempo to give a pathos feeling. It will be wonderful. Of course, it was only a stray thought that entered my mind.
"An evening with her" is what I liked in that site. Nice slow flute-like piece, smooth transitions etc.
But most soothing was the latest composition in Abhogi/Valaji - wow this is really good. The sound was also very "full" if you know what I mean. I absolutely love when you have a guitar/piano combination with a ragam.

Sridhar,
Heard your latest song on TAMIL language set to sufi format. Extremely masterful composition. You have generated a great feel to the composition. Singer has done a nice job too - Solid voice. However, Felt that the song was little long. How was this composition performed, Rather what was the background to this situation? - Iam inspired with the sufi feel thereby maintaing the tamil mood. Great job on this nice number. Good Luck to you.

Ha! Ha! Ha!
Thanks for your patient listening.
Here goes the story.
Mr. Suhir from FETNA approached us with this lyric and wanted the song with a sufi feel. Since I did not have a tabla player with me, I created a percussion loop from "Varaaga Nadhi" song by ARR. Sundar (the singer) and I played the loop and started composing on the fly. We wanted to get the melody right before we did the improvisations. So we recorded a rough track. Mr. Suhir' plan was to use 16-20 year old tamil kids to perform this live. We had to keep it a little simple.
Unfortunately, the kids got overwhelmed and Suhir came back to us wondering if we could do this live. Though I liked the idea, I told him that we are not pro-sufi guys. We could do it with lot of hard work that would require a month. Since we had only a few days before the event, Suhir asked me to make a 10 minute(?) song out of the rough track. He said that he would choreagraph a dance(?) for this. We had no clue to what he was upto. But I liked his enthusiasm.
Then I sat an entire Saturday (8:00 - 5:00) and made this track. It is very difficult to listen on its own since lot of cut and paste(?) was involved. It makes it monotonous beyond a point.
We plan to do a full-fledged studio recording of the song soon.
The whole feel and lot of ideas came from Sundar, a brilliant upcoming young singer in N.A. I am very fortunate to work with him. He knows so many idioms that he can drive you crazy with his enthusiasm and ideas.

Guys, (Adding to what Sridhar told about Sunder)
Sunder is very talented singer with lots of ideas; he is a trained musician in Hindustani music and has a very good and clear understanding of Carnatic music. He does not stop there he can also add the pop-essence to light numbers. He clearly gives the much-needed enhancement and vocal support to my scores. Apart from singing (the most important task of all, he has good language diction Tamil or Hindi. He knows them quite well to Speak, Read and Write :)
I thank Sridhar for introducing him; We are now into some more serious music with Sunder. I will upload a song by Sunder that I composed the music and I would say Sridhar helped me and provided me lots of valuable suggestions which paved way to enhance the song. This was recorded in my studio couple of months ago.
I have taken up a tough subject "Thirupavai" and want to present this in a light manner for people to understand the mood, music and the lyrics. This is one of the greatest literary works in Tamil. I thank Ram for getting this idea into me.
The version below is the first edition. Keeping the sanctity of the lyrics, we recorded 3 songs each one in different forms of music, this one is lightest version of the all.
This is pasuram number 15 called "ellE iLam kiLeye" (What surprise (ellE)!, You beautiful parrot.)
This is actually a conversation among andal and her friends, Andal tries to wake her friends to workship the Lord. The reply part is denoted by a surprise element in the track.
I would say it is a very hard subject to grasp, I am sure it is an open target for critics. If you find any mistakes I would take the responsibility to correct it as this is not the final version.
With this introduction, I request you to listen to this song. You can download it from
