In comparing Kannadhaasan and Vairamuthu objectively, why don't we all prove to ourselves that we don't need to take sides with a poet and only take sides with good poetry? I can come up with enough examples for both poets and I'm sure many others can too. Let's consider this a tiny saevai for TFM lyrics. I will gladly set forth the categories that we can judge the two poets by and we can all go to work. If anything I hope this exercise will make one diehard fan of Kannadhaasan appreciate VM and vice versa.
Here are the categories to judge both poets by giving examples of lyrics they wrote for TFM:
1)Iyarkai Varnanai
2)Kaadhal Paadalgal
3)Thaththuva Paadalgal
4)Vaarthai Prayoagam
5)Nagaichchuvai Paadalgal
6)Samudhaaya Seerthirutha / Puratchi Paadalgal
7)Vingyaana/Naveena Karuthoottum Paadalgal
8)Ilakkiya Moolam Ulla Paadalgal
9)Kadhaikku Porundhiya Paadalgal(situational songs)
10)Kavidhai Milekarkal (Poetic Milestones that the poets will be remembered by!)

Udhaya:
Thanks for the nadhiyOram lyrics.
OK for your idea not to close this topic right now.
In the movie, 'Thiruvilaiyadal' Kannadhasan wrote
the song...
podhigai malai uchchiyilE puRappadum thendral
Does anyone know the full lyrics? Does it have
any description of nature?

Just another perspective on summations:
Isn't a rough summation will be better now--when the contents of each topic are still fresh in our minds rather than wait until 10 huge subtopics are over? Especially since most of the subtopics are designed to be mutually exclusive/ independent?
When the 10 subtopics are over, we need to focus on the ultimate summation to answer the big question, and these mini-summations will serve as efficient/independent inputs to that. A summation does not mean we are closing the subtopic now, just makes the process more systematic and crisper to have such preliminary or intermediate summations by subtopic before we focus on another subtopic, IMHO.
Anyway, I leave it to you all to decide what you think is the most efficient way for each of you; depends on how much data each person looks for to make a call, I guess.
Just in case....my preliminary summation for this topic is included in my regular posting to avoid my having to backtrack later. Sorry about that!
Keerthi:
I think podhigai malai uchchiyilE is more of a romantic song, if I remember right. The only lines I remember are:
vAn paRakkum kodiyinilE
meen paRakkum madhuraiyilE
thAn paRandhu Atchi seyyum

Wish I could remember more!

My Summary Comments/Opinions:
I find kaNNadhAsan's works to be everything everyone expects and takes for granted from kaNNadhAsan--pooraNa kaviththuvam, thamizh nayam, poruL nayam, kaRpanai vaLam, ilakkiya sugam, iyaRkaiyin maNam.
However, vairamuththu's verses on nature touch a chord in me unfailingly. "How did this guy even know my innermost feelings and dreams around Nature?" has been my first thought when I first listened to some of his songs we've listed above. He goes beyond just iyaRkai varNanai and makes communing with nature personal and real-- possible only by someone who has bonded with nature in such a personal way. Such finer feelings are very rarely experienced or expressed for fear of sounding "wimpy", but very much needed in today's cynical, materialistic world with its hectic lifestyles, IMO.
Isn't making the listener identify with his(her) feelings one dimension of good poeticism? If so, VM is very successful in this dimension with reference to nature, at a personal level for me. And, he has a social message about nature appreciation (byproduct: ecological awareness) needed very much for the remainder of this century and the next.
So, I'm glad VM followed kaNNadhAsan in TFM
as far as the subtopic Nature is concerned, and went one step ahead in extolling Nature amidst all the "glam and sham" of the tinsel industry today, and advocates to the "masses" to bond with Nature. [Sidebar: I,m glad he continues this social service thru his non-TFM works too.]
"sillu sillAgik kidakkum vAzhkkaiyai sEgarikkavE nEramillaiyE..idhil pookkaLOdu uRaiyAdalA....? pOdA paiththiyakkArA endRu parikasikkAdheergaL. iruL pOna piRaguthAn udhippadhAi uththEsam endRu sooriyan summAiyirundhAl pagalukku Edhu mugavari?"--iyaRkaik kavignar vairamuththu.
This has been a fun exercise so far. See you all in Part II later!

Okay, here's my temporary summation then. VM has surprised many die-hard Kannadhaasan fans by his vivid nature imagery and florid analogies about communing with nature. For VM, Nature is the bodhi maram that inspires and conducts his poetry. Kannadhaasan's mind is a waterfall whose origin is hard to place, it encompasses many things, iyarkai, dheiveegam, vedhaantham, sithaandham, samudhaayam, etc.
But since, we are just summing up the topic of Nature Imagery, I saythings are pretty even with the scale slightly tipped up in VM's favor because Kannadhaasan is like a General Physician who also caters to nature, whereas, VM is a Nature specialist.
Now, onto the second topic.

logical correction: "the scale is tipped down in VM's favor" tipped up would mean the opposite.

My opinion....first of all sorry for digressing but I could not resist drawing up a comparison between KD and VM. I agree with Udhaya when he says that the origin point of KD's lyrics are hard to imagine....such an all encompassing personality...he could write "Kadavul manithanaaka pirakka vendum", "Unnai cholli kutramillai" and "Iraval thanthavan ketkinraan...","Oru poojiyathile..." probably because he never identified himself with any fixed personality ... must have been a spontaneous human being ( ala J.Krishnamoorthy). VM somehow, has a limited personality ..probably to attached to nature than necessary despite his command over Tamil and general sensitivity. Some of my favorite "nature" lyrics of VM, 'ithu oru ponamaalai", "malargale malargale", "otra kaal " song from ..I think Jeans
