I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Thanks for that AVR.
Yes, everybody else is less talented.
Yes, everybody else is fit for the bathroom, a non-singer, maybe average, awful, or accented.
Your objectivity, restraint, scholarship, sense of justice is staggering.
Please forgive me for my frustrated ramblings, my lack of knowledge, my disgusting views of Lata and Asha (they are supreme, invincible, noble, beyond compare),my poor debating skills, my sense of (il)logic, my obliviousness of my own contradictions...
Oh, I do feel terrible. I feel like I have lost all good sense. I feel so incompetent.
Thank you for making me see the TRUTH (with all its exclamations). I am so indebted to your vision, clarity, sense of purpose, mastery of argument and analysis.
I REST MY CASE.
Please tell LATA and all those Anti-Lata Marathas, I really, really, really did not mean what I said.
I promise.

Hello Neel,
I am awaiting your response to my queries. This morning I played the two songs from Moondru Mudichchu:
Aadi Velli - VJ PJC
Vasantha Kaala Nadhigaliley VJ PJC
The lyrics are by Kannadasan? How wonderfully he weaves in the "Gal" endings in the latter song. And VJ is perfect with her nuancing of each ending. A true gem of a song. (Reminds me of the old Kannadasan hit - PBS and PS duet: Parthaean Rasithaen Pakkam Vara Thudithaen...amazing how Kannadasan does this wordplay. He does it also in another duet of VJ-TMS: Ammannai - from the old Shivaji (I think the film flopped, but this song was very popular in the 70s)- Kanchana (?) movie: Avan Oru Sariththiram.
Please get back to me about the Lottery Ticket song if you have any info. I would really appreciate that.
Many thanks,
Naaz

Ammanai song, I like it very much. Great lyrics (really), very good music to support the lyrics, nicely modulating voices to enhance the tune. One of the great songs of TFM.
Ammanai
Azahu mihum kannmanai
Aadi varum penn maanaith
Thedi varum perumaanai

Nambiya Penn Oru Tharagai
Aval Nadiya Nee Oru Vanagam
Vinnagam Mariya Pothilum
Indha Pennagam Maruvathillaiye!
Yes, VJ's extension of the Bhavam at the end of that verse on "illaiye" is miraculous.
I am glad you agree Raghavan.

All things considered I shouldn't have bothered explaining the whole Monopoly of the Mangeshkars, after all. I just read the singers page (on Vani Jairam) which is not written by me....And it makes all the points I made. I wish I had read that before and saved myself the hassle.
TFM Singers: for those interested - Look up Vani Jairam on TFM singers. It tells you (and this can only be objective as it is not one of MY postings - but one written by the editorial board of this site)about VJ training in the classical styles, her impeccable pronunciation in Hindi and Tamil (among other languages), her unterutilised talents in Tamil by IR and other MDs... AND the editorial profile states in no uncertain terms that VJ was discouraged in Bombay by other TOP singers.
It also gives you a good list of her songs in the Tamil Language.
Now the readers/participants of this thread can judge for themselves where the real BIAS is.

Naaz,
I don't have any info or links to those two songs you asked about. You may want to try the "Song Stats" thread. Experts visit that thread to answer queries. http://newtfmpage.com/forum/songstats.html
Here is some more about the songs from 'moonru mudichchu". Both of those are based on the traditional andhAdhi poetry style. Every line begins with the last word from the previous line (pallavi, charanam, all through the song).
vasanthakAla nadhigaLilE vairamaNi neeralaigaL
neeralaigaL meethinilE nenjiraNdin ninaivalaigaL
ninaivalaigaL thodarnthu vanthAl nEramellAm kanavalaigaL
kanavalaigaL vaLarvathaRku kAmanavan malarkkaNaigaL
malarkkaNaigaL pAinthuvittAl .... and it goes on.
The other song:
AdiveLLi thEdi unnai nAn adaintha nEram kOdi inbam nAdi vanthEn kAviriyin Oram
OrakkaNNil ooRa vaiththa thEn kavithai cAram ... and it goes on.
They are both great songs. Just listen to how Vani begins "ninaivalaigaL" and "thalai aNaiyil". Vani begins every line at perfect pitch, she doesn't take even a fraction of a second to warm up or to rise to the note.

Thanks a lot for your input Neel. I truly and really appreciate it.
I wonder why you have been so awfully quiet during the "monopoly" debate and being accused of Slander when I did no such thing.
Another of the less heard - but beautiful and unusual numbers by Vani is:
Yen Peyare Yennakku Maranthu Pona Indha Manandharathil Yenna Peyar Solli Azhaithathu Yaar
Classic MSV - Vani team work.

There is a solo by VJ in the film 47 Naatkal (music: MSV). It was picturised on Rema-Prabha. Neel/Ragavan - how about jogging my memory by providing the opening line?
Another fine SPB-Vani Duet is from the film Natakame Ullagam (music: V. Kumar): "Sapathaswaram Punnagayil Kandaen, Sangeethathin Taalatai Kaetaen"
The last few moments of that number, where VJ softens the "vizhi jaalathil uruvanatho" is another memorable touch.

Neel D:
Can u tell me very briefly what are the themes/situations of the foll. songs (a brief translation of the first line)
-meghame meghame
-yaarathu sollamal
-elluil engo
All three are fantastic songs. The last song shows how effortless VJ sounds at high pitches.IR I am sure must be considering this composition a gem.

Another very delightful VJ song is thattchich chellum.... sung for MSV. Who is the person who sings "twinkle twinkle little star" in the middle.

"Thathich Chellum muthuk kannan" is very good. Listen her tone. Konjchal irukum athil.
Do anyone remember a song "Oru Paadalai naan ketean" from Osai. I think Sankar Ganesh scored music for that movie. Any idea?

avr,
It is a tough job to translate poetry and produce the same effect in the translation. I will try.
megame megame (a huge hit when it came out) - A young woman dying from cancer, but keeps that to herself, moves to a new house with her father. There she becomes good friends with a group of young unemployed men in the neighborhood. But they don't know that she is dying. Slowly one of those young men falls in love with her. But only she knows about the impossibility.
First two lines:
"Cloud Oh Cloud, the milky moon is eroding away
Though the body erodes its sweet light still shines".
Vani will move you to tears with pAvaiyin rAgam sOgangaLO and the humming that follows.
yaarathu - I don't remember the exact situation. It is a love triangle story. Singer Poornima falls in love with married man Mohan, not knowing he is married.
"Who is that stranger who took away my heart,
Womanhood that cannot bear the pain shall sing in sadness".
ennuLLil engO - A modern woman marries a coutry man. Then she meets a modern man from the city and starts liking him. She expresses her forbidden desire but still enjoys the way she feels.
"Inside of me, a song of yearning
Why can I hear it, why does it bother me so much
But still it is joyful"
Very cryptic lyrics. You can sense the yearning throughout the song. The mood is Vani special.

Oru Padal Naan Kaetaen was the tamil version of the Hindi Tune EK Pyaar Ka Naghma Hai from the film Shor (literal translation in tamil: Osai!)

Neel D,
Have you heard this number: Indha kangal rendum kathal deepangal, andha kaaman thandha vannak kolangal..."
From the film Vellichchthukku Vaanga (the film was a flop and disappeared without a trace.)
The song was another beautiful number by VJ.
There is another song from Pozhuthu Vidinjachchu (music Gangai Amaran)
Kaatrae Sellu Oru Kaadhal Thoodhu...
Another one of Vani's lesser known ditties - but just as alluring for it brilliance.

There are two more good songs under GA-VJ combination.
1. Vaa Vaa En Veenaiye
2. Appapa Charanam Charanam Un Paathangkal (or Ammamma?)
