Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Hello Neel D,
Sorry for addressing a few of the points to you. I hope I did not offend you. Thank you for your patience.
I see what you mean: It is true that anybody can have an opinion. And everybody does. It is the thinking "through" of one's position which makes for an "analysis." I hope I have demonstrated that I don't use my words thoughtlessly, or without a certain rationale/reference. I am sure you can see that in my postings here.
Some people get what I am saying. Some people don't. But that's the way it goes. I hope my responses here reveal that I am not a person who is into "slander" ( I have never given examples of songs by Lata which I think are rather insufferable,)nor have I demonstrated any specific "ethnic" bias (Let's get this: No MARATHA is ever going to diss the Mangeshkars. You can bet your life on it. Of course, they're all being objective.)I am an Indian Muslim who speaks Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Malayalam and a few other languages. Vani and Lata are both artistes - and both only names to me. I have no personal axe to grind.
Having said that let me say this once and for all: Intelligent debate can only emerge from reasoned analysis. Let's all hold ourselves responsible, and try to measure up to that standard. Let's not indulge in more myth-making or sycophancy.
Many thanks,
Naaz

No MARATHA is ever going to diss the Mangeshkars.
Naaz:
I was going to bye-bye out of this, were it not for this statement.
Naaz, I literally IMPLORE you. Please listen to this carefully. I have come to respect ur qualifications. However this statement of yours ABOVE is in extremely bad taste - EXTREMELY BAD.
Just as Tamils complain of being looked down upon by Northies, we Marathi speakers feel we get the same treatment from Northies. And sometimes from Southies too. There have been such idiotic statements made by people of late. But if I start discussing those here, we will digress even further and things will just get uglier.
There HAVE BEEN Maharashtrians who have said POOR things about Lata and Asha - indeed go to the other VJ thread. See a post by a certain Mr Bilolikar. Its egregious. Its fashionable nowadays, I feel, to start slandering such legends by calling them "devdasis". Indeed even today I have heard that the Mangeshkars arent allowed to enter Goan temples. My uncle told me about this about a few weeks back.
Now, u say no Maharshtrian is going to diss the Mangeshkars due to ethnicity, provinciality, however i will NOT make similar statements about the Tamils, for whom I have great respect (and the reasons are more than JUST music - i'll tell u some other time maybe).
However if u feel u are the ONLY PERSON who has demonstrated "high objectivity", thats sadly wrong. So stop accusing me of myth-making or sycophancy, I again implore.

Lastly as far as the insufferability of Lata songs post 1990 (there are a few exceptions though) - I, or more that matter all of her most knowledgeable fans, couldnt agree more!!!
But again I do not see why only SHE is being targeted - all the veteran singers have had ghastly effects on their voices of late. U just pick one song by any of those and u can realize it.
And the thing that people forget when they criticise Lata now is - when did she START singing. The answer is 1941-2 (she was 12-13 then) when she became a PROFESSIONAL singer for films and dramas (not an amateur radio artist). And I think the other singers started much later. Asha started in 1947 and PS I think in 1951.And VJ in 1971 (at the age of 25).

AVR: The statement was made in context of your prompt and fleeting denial of the "Mangeshkar Monopoly." What did you call it: The ramblings of frustrated souls? Did you even pause for a moment to think of Asha (never mind the rest) and what she has said during her fight with her badi didi? Perhaps you should look up Asha's interviews in her heydays of singing for OP.Nayyar. Secondly, the statement was about the "monopoly" and not about the "quality" of Lata's singing voice or stature. What I find most interesting is your infinite ability to overlook the "context" of my statements, ignore their import, and then accuse me of slander. Please do me a favour: Read my postings here a few times - and see where I have said one "bad" thing about Lata's voice or her achievements. Do me that favour.
And while I am at it, let me add this: To attribute everything to "frustration" of "souls" is to implicitly acknowledge denial. If there were just one or two "frustrated" singers who have said things about a monoploy one can dismiss it as sour grapes. But when the list extends to encompass an entire generation of singers, I would think it to be more than a coincidence: Suman Kalyanpur, Sharada, Sulakshana Pandit, Dilraj Kaur, Chandrani Mukherjee, Hemlata (I don't beleive she has sung for many songs of others, predominantly singing only for Ravindra Jain), Runa Laila, Vani Jairam,...have all gone on record, at some point in their Bombay days, and have stated in unequivocal terms their experience with the "monopoly." Frustrated souls, indeed.
More proof: Lata even thought of suing Sai Paranjape when she made "Saaz" and acknowledged it to be an adaptation of the factual Asha-Lata rivalry.
So please spare me the sanctimony. And no, you are wise not to digress, although you seem to miss my points entirely by taking them so personally, mostly by taking them entirely out of context.
I hope I have helped clarify where I stand on this.

Hi Neel D:
I thought you might have heard this number:
"Kannil Vandhai Nenjil Nidrai Nee" from the film Lottery Ticket (MD: L.Vaidyanathan) Duet by VJ -Jayachandran. It is quiet, soothing and immensely alluring number. Know where I might find it on the net? I know it is a tall order - but I guess if anybody knows where it can be found, it would be you.
Another duet I heard recently was by VJ-KJY:
"Isaiyin Mazhaiyile Undhan Idhayam Nanayave." Music is by Narasimhan. Film? Any ideas?
Hope to hear from you.
Thanks,
Naaz

Naaz:
Yes the Mangeshkar monopoly is a mad rambling. And I am going to accuse you of slander.
I have a tape of Asha in the early 50s with a few interviews recorded too. She has VEHEMENTY denied that her didi ever troubled her. In fact, I have read in an article by a journalist called Gangadhar(and another person - some south indian name) that Asha and Lata lived in the same house on the same floor for more than 3 decades. It was Lata who pulled out Asha off the mess with her marriage. Go and check a few facts before pouring your pompous rubbish. And then talk about the objectivity of Marathas.
In fact Gangadhar says that OPN often used to record songs in the same house. Lata has openly praised OPN time and again.
And if the Lata Monopoly existed why were people like OPN,KANU ROY, Ravi so successful though they showed open preference for Asha. Think before making myths.
But when the list extends to encompass an entire generation of singers, I would think it to be more than a coincidence: Suman Kalyanpur,
In the same article the man has quoted that Suman has never accused Lata. Indeed it was a famous interview 2 years ago where Suman praises for Lata. The whole of Pune knows that. (And Lata as a person, not just a singer.)
And in some songs like "ajahun aaye" or "rahein na rahein hum", we easily come to know that Lata is the one with the superior voice control.
Try the two versions of "rangeela re" if u wish, or of "garjat barsat.." or "rahein na rahein hum" or ......
Sharada,
Sharda is at best a bathroom singer.
Sulakshana Pandit, dilraj kaur
She is simply not a patch on Lata.
BTW I havent come across a SINGLE instance where DK has accused LM. See who invents myths.
(And these two are much better than VJ for Hindi songs)
Chandrani Mukherjee,
She is a good singer but not in the league as Lata. But I guess a person who can equate sharada with Lata, will never be able to understand this.
Hemlata (I don't beleive she has sung for many songs of others, predominantly singing only for Ravindra Jain),
Pray what happened. Why did nobody want her. They all wanted Lata and Asha, see the entire clan of music directos, lyricisists, producers and directors was not made of fools.
Runa Laila,
She was a non-singer too. And I have heard her in Cal. LIVE. And she is pretty awful.
Vani Jairam,...
WARPED PRON. was THE factor why she lost out!!!
And a whole clan of Northies (and several Southies too) agree with me.
But u will stubbornly insist that her Hindi and Urdu is of the polished Lucknow-Benaras style!! Great!!! Is Lata-slander a necessary criterion for Vani-fanaticism???????????????
Frustrated souls, indeed.
How true!!! :-)
More proof: Lata even thought of suing Sai Paranjape when she made "Saaz" and acknowledged it to be an adaptation of the factual Asha-Lata rivalry.
Yeah yeah. I know some of my relatives who are part of the anti-Lata bandwagon to come up with this idiotic and poorly made movie which Sai Paranjape made to sustain her flagging career. How about the fact that SP often says it has nothing to do with the Mangeshkars.
And its such a pathetic movie. Why do you think Asha was the first to crticise Sai P.for this. Because she is mad??
If all the MDs had preference for Lata, then they knew something. Or no?? U will not apply the same yardsticks everywhere becuase u want to slander and vilify her reputation. I think Lata must have been moving around with scimitars and AK 47 rifles
which prevented MDs from using other voices.
She must have dismantled the recording equipment in the studios I suppose???? Or maybe she hypnotized a whole FILM INDUSTRY (as big as Bollywood) to dance to her directions????
I feel the MDs almost always have wanted Lata and only Lata. Directors and producers alike, all have wanted to have her golden voice in their movies. U are trying to compare her to singers who arent an iota as good as she is. But thats a characteristic feature of the flimsy arguments of the frustrated anti-Lata bandwagon. Your thoughtless and puerile outbursts will not affect her at all. She has nothing more to achieve after having been honoured the nation's highest civilian award for her singing AND social service. Indeed she and Asha are regular donors to the social service wing of the RSS and the output has been the biggest hospital in India.
Now let me quote Gangadhar again. He says that the following people have always spoken well of Lata's personality, her generosity, her humilty and her helpfulness. I wonder why u will not like to believe them. But u might say that its pure diplomacy or the interview was taken on gunppoint (thats what a few of my relatives say too!!)
Here's the list:
1)Manna dey
2)mukesh
3)talat mehmood
4)GEETA DUTT
5)ASHA BHOSLE
6)SUMAN KALYANPUR
7)SUDHA MALHOTRA
8)Alka Yagnik
9)KAVITA KRISHNAMURTHY
10)SADHANA SARGHAM
11)KL SAIGAL
12)Naushad
12)Madan Mohan and his family
13)SALIL CHAUDHARY - his wife Sabita and Antara
14)S Janaki
15) P Sushila
16)MS Subbalaxmi
17)Suresh Wadkar
18)Noorjehan
19)Shamshad Begam
20)Suraiyya
21)Hemant Kumar
22)Naushad
23)Laxmikant Pyarelal
24)Kalyanji Anandji
25)sajjad Hussain
26)majrooh Sultanpuri
27)Narendra Sharma
28)Bhalji Pendharkar
29)Yash Chopra
30)PAMELA CHOPRA
31)Gulzar
32)Vasant Prabhu
33)Snehal Bhatkar
34)shrinivas Khale
35)Anil Mohile
36)Mahakavi Pradeep
All these people have time and again spoken of the sheer kindness and humility of this person called Lata.
Sometimes I feel being too good is also a sin!! Thats the case with Lata. She is so good (and her voice so flawless) that people must invent myths and spread ugly rumours. U probably rank amongst the foremost in the divine and angelic (and indeed sanctimonious) mission to speak ill about her.
What I find most interesting is your infinite ability to overlook the "context" of my statements, ignore their import, and then accuse me of slander.
Indeed I accuse you of slander coz I have read your statements which are in extremely bad taste!!! You have continuously contradicted your own claims from previous posts. I have even showed u a place where u claimed "X" and "Complement of X" one after the other.
U use a proposition "Y" to prove an absurd claim "X" and then use that to prove "Complement of X" too. This process has been called "objectivity","fairness"...... any more abstract nouns????
Please do me a favour: Read my postings here a few times
They are not worth that!! Sorry!!!But maybe u could do the same????
Here is a link to it. Theres another one by Gangadhra and the other journalist, the links to which I do not have.
http://hindu.com/2001/05/18/stories/09180701.htm
Since u are so desparate to vilify Lata's reputation (though you slyly and sanctimoniously deny the same), u will always come with convenient arguments to suit your parochial views. However I have learnt from you what personal attacks on online fora can mean. I am indebted to you. Thank you so much!!!
Since u are also very interested in knowing what Asha says, here is another quote. Coincidentally Ihave watched the interview a few days back after she won the Dadasahib Phalke award : "Didi is incomparable. Lesser singers who accused her o monopoly have no right to do so - they were less talented. The efforts taken by didi to improve upon her singing constantly have been extremely admirable.People should learn to think before accusing such a noble person of things she never did!"
Now let me see whether what is true for the goose is also true for the gander!!!! Maybe it will not be - the slightest negative remark on Lata is always trusted and the largest positive remark is thrown out of the window.
Please do not post if u do not find satisfactory explanations to this!!

Mor to it... Sai P. uses a girl whose face resembles Asha's - spews nonsense about the character of Lata,Asha and other members , then she says it had nothing to do with them. That shows what a pathetic, pitiable coward she is.
And best part - ASHA HERSELF denies it that Lata stifled her(asha's )chances!!Golly!!
