Rafi simply excels in romantic numbers..I believe some songs of his like "aaja re aa zara" (which is one of amy all-time favouites), "abhi naa jaao chodukar", "rukh se zara naquaab", "aaj ki raat baito paas" etc. were trendsetters and have been the standards set as far as delivering romantic numbers are concerned....

Since you are talking about Rafi's songs, what about the passionate songs that he sang for Madanmohan - 'meri diniya mein tum aaye', 'tum jo mil gaye ho' (BTW the lead guitarist for this song was Bhupindra) and 'tumse kahoon ek baat'(Dastak) ? Rafi although lacking 'machoness' in his voice, still could convey the passion very credibly.

A few pages back (in this or a similar thread?...there are so many `northie' threads around), someone pointed out that in the same movie, for the same hero, a different singer is used for specific songs (semi-classical or whatever reason). This IMHO is inadequacy on the singer's part and/or probably a sin committed by the MD.
To me if the singer is changed for the hero in the same movie, a lot of charm is lost. Just imagine these scenarios: (Disclaimer -these are purely imaginary lest some XMF will start a row)
....
a) Film-PM. ilayanilA is a typical SPB song OK but this is a high pitched semi-classical, let me ask TMS to sing rAgha dheepam...mani Osai is slow pathos, KJY is well suited...let me ask KJY to sing vaigarayil too... after all he sang `vAzhvE mAyam' for KH in similar situation, while SPB did all the others in that film...
b) Film SB - Oh, thaNNiththotti is a typical dappAnguthu, let me give it to MV
c) Film MM - Such a soft song, I shouldn't give this to MV, let KJY sing this `poongAtRu' (SPB won't suit Sivaji but KJY will)....
If IR had been making decisions like the above, he would have proved himself GA's brother and never the great MD that he is! Similarly, if SPB or KJY were considered only that much, we won't call them greats...

Are u talking about 'shadjane paayal ....' ?
BTW - is the music track of this film available anywhere? Also, do u know the other songs from this film?

"shadjane paayal..." was never released because the producers felt that the song was too classical for the market!! To the best of my knowledge, the movie and the music track were also never released. This was one of KJY's favourite songs and he used to sing it regularly in his stage shows.

While on the topic of singing, has anybody here heard Luciano Pavarotti or Andrea Boccelli? The vocal range of these tenors is simply mindblowing. Though I havent' sat at the piano trying to figure out the notes they hit at the extremes but just wondering if anybody here has heard them. Now these guys have THE range. And the best part is they have a certain trick to overcoming the upperlimit of their natural voices and amazing vocal power (ie diaphram support). Thoughts?

I would agree with Srikant. Rafi iis the greatest.Even SPB has acknowldeged that.Simply his voice range is unparellel.THe voice frequency in all the three tara, madyama and mantra sthayies
was superbly controlled. unlike most of the other singers today.he could sing from mantra "pa" to Tara "pa" with ease.
His melody, modulation, gamakam and emotional delivery were outstanding.tHere are several shining examples in his songs.
Perhaps only SPB comes closest to him.

dear mahesh:
And pray what makes u say so??? Is it just a feelin, or a logical conclusion. If u feel SPB is the best, that UR esteemed opinion :-)), but the PROVEN FACT is that he is ONE of the best male singers of the India, the world, the universe, mankind, humankind,of the set of all living organisms etc etc whatever u want to call.

neels: Why put TMS last out there - I cannot understand. MSV-TKR-PS-TMS was a wonderful group in the 60s. IMO - rafi, spb,KJY,TMS are easily on par.

lv, i am only saying spb is the greatest in the world. when one can say rafi is the greatest in india, i am entitled to say spb is the greatest in the world. i mean and always mean spb is superior to any other male singer in India.mr neel, it is a tragedy that the greatest singer in tamil film music,(spb greatest in indian film music)tms is placed behind a very ordinary cine singer but a good ghazal singer. KAAAAAAAlam.

On what basis is SPB superior to KJY,RAFI,TMS. Please let us know, rather than parroting out the same statement 1000000 times in the same thread like this. That show u lack substance to support ur arguments.

Rafi, SP and KK(some people may differ about KK) stand unique among male singers.
We may have out own personal favorites for reasons best known to us.
Each of them have something very special in the way they sing and thus we have songs from them which we wouldnt want to be sung/repeated by any other.
Though there is absolutely no doubting the talents of Sirkazi,TMS ... one thing which differs with them is that their voice was limited to a particular time period and may not suit today.
Small digression:
Can someone tell me if there any influence of BalaMuraliKrishna on SPB. SOMETIMES the VOICE is strikingly similar(
for instance just before the TMS's "Paatum Naaney" in Tiruvilaiaadal there is an Aalap? by BMK and that voice is strikingly similar.

shruti, you are exactly right. each of them is great in their own way. lv, spb's greatness is reflected in the number of awards he has won, the span as singer, voice, modulation, variety, versatility, sweetness etc.

mr mahesh:
And pray when have I denied SPBs greatness at all? Awards do not necessarily reflect an artist's calibre. The voice modulation, sweetness, versatility, span, variety etc etc was also present in Rafi.

I think TMS's talents has been grossly underminedin this thread.
"pattu Naane", Vasantha Mullai, Yerikarai mele, naan petra selvam, his songs in 'PA" series ,padagotti are truly out standing. HH is no comparison to TMS. HH sounds awful and blarring in higher octaves; He can't sing in western light numbers for nuts. He used to be good as a ghazal singer.that's all. TMS is an alltime great play back singer.
TMS did not maintain his voice well and after the MID 70's he met with his downfall which coincided with the rise of KJY and SPB.But Many of TMS songs are inimitable.

sundar,
Not only the classical songs. Can anyone other than TMS sing a song like "engE nimmathi", "yaarukkaaga", "iraNdu manam vEndum", "neeyum nAnumA kaNNA", "antha nAL gnAbagam nenjilE vanthathE", "thEvanE ennai pArungaL"?
pAdugiREn pErvazhi endru cumma oothugiRa Hariharanai, listla TMSkku mEla pottuttaangaL. enakku manasE aaRalai. Sometimes I wonder what did they do in the 60s and 70s in TeluguFM, MalayalamFM and KannadaFM without a voice like TMS who came to define TFM of the 60s and early 70s along with the queen PS.

Well said. TMS blabers oflate and the reason is because, he did not get his due recognition. His voice is unique and it's only because of him that most of Shivaji and MGR songs are still popular.

neel, there is no doubt that tms is the greatest ever tamil film music singer.he just picturises the scenes in our mind thorough his songs.but luckily, we had an excellent successor to tms in spb.unfortunately we dont see any present day singers coming anywhere near to spb. it is a tragedy that spb also doesnt sing much in tamil whereas he makes good numeber of songs in telegu.
