Subbu:
If you see the topic of this thread, you will find that this has been started way back in 1998. I presume that IR has accepted the award in that year itself. Your boss himself has acknowledged LM and accepted the award. That shows that IR considers LM greater than himself. Then why fight over the issue. I am sure you do not have enough knowledge about LM. Supporting LM does not mean that we oppose IR.
I am a die hard fan of sachin and consider him the greatest. But if some body asks me to compare him with Don then, I will say that Don is Don.
IR vs LM is just like that. She is spread every where in India. She is the queen of film music. IR even though great in his own sphere, has a limitation of being confined only to south.
Your Gandhiji example is poor. When Gandhi died LM should have been in her teen. MS was a well established classical singer. Has MKG lived, I am sure he would have also appreciated LM as much, if not more, as MS.

Subbu,
Just curious.Has Gandhiji composed any album? How is Gandhiji musically?
I know a few musical geniuses who were bad human beings.

One day ARR is going to surprise us with somebody like Lata singing for him, even though she might not be around (May God bless her with a long life). He has recorded her so many times, he has enough samples. One day synthesizer technology is going to be too good and ARR being a whiz on the keyboard is just going to play her voice out on it. Or atleast he will be using her voice for humming :)

We must confer "Sowmya award" on Sri Thyagaraja,
"Hariharan award" on Muthuswami Dikshidar,
"Unnikrishnan award" on Bharathiyar..
Sowmya, Hariharan, and Unnikrishnan are good singers and Sri Thyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshidar and Bharathiyar must be proud to receive it..
Kali muthi pochu..
PS: IR has accepted the award out of his humbleness. To those who think pakavadhiyam takes the main place in kacheri[especially LV], my sympathy is always with you. Here i am not implying pakvadhiyam has no place, but it has its own place and i hope you all realize it..

Dear Subbu:
--Thanks for all the inputs from HFM (is there not a hfmpage ... oh so sad...). I agree that you seem to have spent lot of time in listening to a wide variety of N.Indian music.
ans: Dear Subbu, praising the worthy Tamil musci does not mean undermining good artists from the north.
--Fortunately, I did not have to because I could get whatever I want from South. You are saying Naushad composed Ghazals but IR did not. Come on you can not be so childish - do you wanna list of what IR has done which Naushad has not ?
ANS: This statement of mine was in response to the statement that 'IR gives variety but Naushad does not'. It does not mean to under-estimate IR at all.
-- You are trying to divert from the basic point here. Compared to a composer, how could a singer be regarded as great ?
ANS: IR has himself accepted the award!!!
By the way, the award was also accepted by RD BURMAN in 1992.
-- You are saying LM's voice is Heavenly voice ... acknowledged by so many people including Michael Jackson (what a great reference...).
ANS: I have given ENOUGH REFERNCES OF INDIANS LIKING HER VOICE. Please read my posts more clearly!! And when Michael Jackson praises Lata,
it means how much her voice proves that MUSIC TRANSCENDS LANGUAGES AND CULTURES.
This incident I read from a old book called 'India's greatest ever' (which obviously did not include LM).
ANS: I have given ENOUGH reasons why MS and LM cannot be compared. They ARE mutual admirers and fans. I also gave the example of Kishori Amonkar (If you ever bother to know who she is and try listening to one of her tapes). She has sung several MEERA BHAJANS and Marathi Bhavgeet. She has even sung in a few films. So it not that she cannot sing light music. Yet it is wrong to compare her to P SUSHEELA. If you mean that LM is not one of the greatest music personalities of India, you are saying it in bad taste and with prejudice because you haven't heard her very much.
you have no right to comment on people whose artistry you havent experienced.
--Regarding MS's Gandhi bhajan, of course who says MS is less a legend than Lata/Asha/Susheela/Kishori. Not at all - I again say LM is herself a diehard MS bhakt. But at that time Lata was barely established at all, outside of Maharashtra. Not that her singing was bad at all. In 1946 she had recorded her first ever solo It was a thumri in raag Basant 'Pao lagoon kar jora jori'. The song did not become popular - but it is one of her best songs as it shows you all of her hundreds of facets as a singer.
-- Also please understand that in addition to whatever qualities that you have mentioned about LM (a playback singer)like H.Voice, diction, bhavam etc., a classical singer like MS has one more dimension in the presentation - 'Creativity' .
ANS: The day when Lata was given Bharat Ratna, I read an anecdote about Lata written by a composer Datta Davjekar - the person who composed the above-mentioned song. He says that once Lata invited Ravi Shankar for a sitar recital at his house. The composer recalls that Lata had actually managed to reproduce(sing) the lightning speed taans of ravi Shankar spontaneously WITH NOTATIONS!! Is this not brilliance?? Lata has the ability to sing a given song in sad and happy mood without change of tune/speed but only by voice modulation and subtlety of pronouciation. Is this not creativity?
-- Do not talk about Padmashiri / Padmabhushan here. If IR had known knee surgery work and got a chance to perform it for the PM, he would have also got a Padmabhushan.
ANS: You are digressing. I said Rafi got ONLY PADMASHRI inspite of his great work!!
-- My stance is very clear. If topmost award like BharatRatna needs any 'mariyAdhai' it has to first precede the name of IR. Till then I am saying in LV's style 'MY FOOT' ...
ANS: So you mean to say that the thread 'ARR THE MOST WORST' is justified???? And that LM did not deserve BHARAT RATNA??
--One more point. You still did not answer my question about those artists from Maharashtra, about Sajjad Hussain, Ustaad Bade GHulam Ali Khan. What I mean to say is that it is not ONLY artists from SOUTH who havent got due recognition.
There are numerous such examples of people from the north also. So that argument of yours is not good.

Dear Prabhu Iyer,
Stop comparing LM with Hariharan and Unnikrishnan.
You will never compare Don Bradman with Rahul Dravid

Again to e-hari,
saying that another LM may happen again and that
another IR will not, is absurd. There have been several people as good md's as IR before, and we still have an ARR!!!!!!!!!!!!
LV
And you diehard IR loyalists and so called 'HIGHLY LOYAL' TAMIL PEOPLE, why dont you ever say sth. against staements like 'Lata worth 5$', 'Lata just hype','Lata not multi-faceted','Lata not as creative as MS'. I wonder what 'CREATIVE' means!!

Hello!
The national awards are not that disappointing! Bhavatharini gets the best National Award for Best Female Playback Singer - Bharathi! Pity IR did not get the Best Music Director award - Anyway IR fans are to be happy! Bharathi has won 4 awards - Best Costumes and Best Art Direction! The other one I don't remember right now - just too enthusiastic!

LV,
**saying that another LM may happen again and that
another IR will not, is absurd. There have been several people as good md's as IR before, and we still have an ARR!!!!!!!!!!!! **
There are lot of good singers like LM, - asha, VJ, suman kalyanpuri all of them, were never got a chance to prove their worth, thanks to one great person, who manipulated and blackmailed using her position. I wish, all those old MDS had some spine like OPN, to ignore lata. I am not saying that she is not good, but if you ask me, we might have another LM, if only she could have been generous.
Looks like, you have a strong opinion about LM, so I guess, that is not going to change, the same way, lot of IR fans feel about him. So why can we just leave this as it is, instead of blowing the same horn over and over again.
To me, another LM is very much possible, even there could be one.
But another IR, considering his background, from where he came, and what he achieved, NO. Anyhow, naushad himselt has acknowledged that IR did 100 times more than any one achieved in his field ( composing). I think that closes the topic, where IR stands, does not it?.

e.hari

"Anyhow, naushad himselt has acknowledged that IR did 100 times more than any one achieved in his field ( composing)."
After Roja was released Naushad claimed that "Kaadhal Rojavae" was the best song composed.Does that mean this song is better than
any song in atleast Tamil?
In a way Naushad would have been right,ARR hadn't composed for 80 films.

Trend,
I dont know, when and where he told that. I would like to see that article, if you know where it is.
But LV in this thread was mentioning that LM was great, because so and so people said so. IT was full of things like that. I just mentioned if that is the case, the ustad naushad himself acknowledged this about IR, then it would close the argument.
BTW, I dont belong to any fan club here. :-).

e.hari,
At that time I was reading wide-eyed about "Internet" .I remember reading it in "Anandha Vikadan" or "Junior Vikadan" not sure.Since you haven't read the article and I can't provide the link to you,you may consider my claim to be invalid.
Anyway, got your point.Don't know what to make of it though.
