I want all of us to participate in a healthy discussion to come up with reasonable definition of different kinds of music cateogories - thereby shedding more light to unexplored areas of Tamil Film Music as it is becoming more and more "international" :-) by the day. This process is simply to increase the knowledge base.
Cateogories that come to my mind are Carnatic, Western Classical, Jazz, Fusion, Flamenco, New age etc. -- :-) so many terms and so little definition.
As for Carnatic and Western Classical, their foundations lie basically in melody and harmony based approaches to music.
What are the foundations of other kinds of music ?
Are they based on the use of certain kind of instruments ?
Since TFM-DF consists of varied set of people with inclinations towards different musical tastes as well I am hoping a lot of them to contribute for this article

4 note theme?? ennai kuzhappureengalE. I thought
the theme is made of melody and melody is related to the patterns of the notes, not to the notes itself. illayA? periyavargal konjam clarify seyyavum.
Now more questions to all the profs.
1) If a composition is in a scale, say A major, it
basically fixes the type of patterns and the
set of notes(from the super set 12).
Does it limit the number of notes also
as in indian classical? In any way how can the
notes constrain the theme? may be it will
constrain the melody to certain extent.
2) I am thinking the closest we can get, from indian classicals, for melody is raga. If so, what is it
for theme? If not so, what are they for melody
and theme?. kunsA artham sonnA pOdhum.
3) Are meter, tempo also parts of a theme?

Now, back to regular classes after that unexpected break.....
mannAru:
I'm totally undeserving of your compliment, but thank you for your kindness. Let me try to answer your questions as much as I can.
Re "theme" versus melody:
Melody is the succession of tones which progress in time, making it the "soul of the musical piece". It is the tune we hum and whistle from the entire musical piece.
A theme is the basic melodic kernel of a long composition, which is expanded and developed to obtain the whole piece or movement of the piece. The power of symphonic thinking lies in how this kernel is deleloped into an expanded composition. A basic technique in such a thematic development is the breaking up of a theme into its constituent motives--the smallest fragment of the theme which forms a melodic-rhythmic unit. Since rhythm is inclusive of meter, meter does belong in the motive (and hence, the theme).
Coming to Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, Beethoven introduces the basic rhythmic idea of "three shorts and a long" in the first theme of the first movement, and repeats it in various sections of all the other movements. IMO, that symphony is a study in the use of superbly controlled rhythm.
Re Key & Notes:
When seven tones out of the twelve are selected to form a major or minor key, the other five become "outsiders" to that particular Tonic. These outside tones enter the composition as transients mainly to embellish melody or harmony; if the five foreign tones become too prominent then the key feeling becomes ambiguous. The Classical and Romantic Eras offer different treatments of the Tonic, which I'm skipping here.
Hope this helps.

I really liked your comments:
Now, back to regular classes after that
unexpected break..... :-))
I got time to read all your postings about the
Music only now. It was really great!
I could understand a lot of things and could not
understand a lot of things that you had explained.
The reason for not understanding some of the
explanations is the terminologies that is used
for explaining the various things.
Even though I was so late to this thread,
I have really enjoyed this whole thread reading
from the beginning.
Thanks to Mux, mannAru & Arul for making this
discussion more lively!
Will be doing more Home Work on this and be
back with more doubts!
Dai BS, nee Home Work Seidhaaya ? :-)))

For a very good introduction to 'listening to music' read 'What to listen for in Music' by one of America's greatest composers, Aaron Copland. The book es excellent - deals with all types of music - western classical music mainly but also film music, twentieth century music, jazz etc. Deals with fundamentals of melody, rhythm, tone color etc.
This book is a classic. The only book of its kind by a composer. A must read for a music-lover. The paperback costs just about $4 (Amazon.com is cheapest).

Thanks so much for your information on the book.
Now, I am getting more curious about this subject!
I am going to order it today!
