BB,
>>The outstanding number from the album, however, is SPB’s ‘KaNNa un aruLaal yaavum iyangum, kanavugal nanavaaga thunai purivaayE’- an exquisite semi-classical delight with breathtaking progressions wherein the nadaswaram and violin find ingenious use and SPB & Kannadasan come together to give vibrant life to a mistreated musician’s wondrous vision.

Last 2 songs, great choices bb/Saravanan. As SL mentioned earlier, Maasila Nilave nam along with GR's KaNNan Mananilamai thangame would rank amongst some of the best ragamaaligas ever composed in TFM. Today's rare SOTD is a flowing melody as well. Amongst the non-IR songs that MV rendered in the 80s, this one along with MSV's "ezhudhugiraaL oru pudhukavidhai" would linger in our memories for a while.

//The stupendous success of oru thalai ragam (1980/ Mansoor Creations) created stars overnight out of all those enterprising newcomers involved in the film and they were all immediately flooded with offers. Producer E.M.Ibrahim was enthused enough to have another go, and set about directing thaNiyaadha dhaagam under the same banner. But this time he didn’t have the support of Robert-Rajasekar, //
what is the connection between robert -rajeshekar and oru thalai rAgam ?
I vaguely remember the film thaNiyatha thaagam. It features, Delhi Ganesh paired opposite to sumithra and a young hero- don't know his name - he is the same guy who acted in Mouli's "Oru vArisu uruvAgirathu" as Prathap pothen-sripriya's son . thaNiyAtha thAgam is a family drama which revolves around Delhi ganesh, sumitha, Delhi ganesh's sister and this neighbourhood guy. apart from this i dont remember anything else.
I noticed that, Shyam(MD) never gets featured in this SOTD. why? konjam karuNai kAttappatathaa? :-)

Prakash, most of Shyam's famous songs have been featured:
aanandha dhaagam vaa indha pakkam
mazhai tharumO en mEgam manidharil iththanai niRangaLaa
vaanam panneerai thoovum kaL vadiyum pookkaL
nenjaththil pOraadum eNNangaL uNarchchigaL

bb, few films by mouli were composed by shyam. vaa intha pakkam, Matravai nEril, nAndri mIndum varuGa ( i think) heard of it but dont remember. In manitaril itththanai niRangala there is a song which is picturised on sridevi and manorama. kind of folk song. two female voices. i dont remember the lyrics and i dont know how to write the notations. there are much more songs by shyam . i will look into my old collections ( of cassetes)will give more details.

Prakash, i think the sridevi-manorama song you are mentioning about goes something like "ponnae bhoomiyarae..ah sai sai sai sai"

Good song and interesting read. I have often wondered what happened to A.A.Raj, after the wonderful music in OTR. Now I know more about him.

Prakash, Robert-Rajasekar were the cinematographers for Oru Thalai Ragam, and I have often heard that they assisted Ibrahim in its direction too.
Thanks for the information on thaNiyaadha dhaagam!
The song you mention is ponnE bhoomiyadi. I have that and some other good songs of Shyam too. Will try to bring them to SOTD soon.

Song of the Day: suttum sudar vizhi from siraichaalai.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/suttumsudar.rm
- Sung by M.G.Sreekumar and Chitra. Music by Ilayaraja.
- IR's music in this Priyadarshan movie (called Kalapani) was one of the high points of his career in the late 1990s. "SempoovE poovE", "aalOlang kiLi thOppilE", "mannan kooraich chElai", "vandhE maatharam" and the SOTD made up this wonderful album. I remember buying the Kalapani original and buying the siraichchaalai cassette again just to listen to SPB's versions.
The movie itself was hyped beyond belief. It was supposed to be the biggest production from the malayalam film industry ever. Mohanlal and Priyan had staked their reputations behind this film, and they tried to cater to the all-Indian market. It was released close to the 50th year of Indian independence or so, and tried to ride the jingoistic wave. From the tamil side, Prabhu played a guest role, as did Delhi Ganesh. Sabu Cyril's art direction was also talked about in the media before the film's release.
Added to this hype was also the rumor that in a few theatres, they were going to show the andaman people topless :) At that time, I think Sathyam even had a billboard that had a few topless andaman natives. Of course, we went to see the film and saw nothing of that sort!
Though the film didn't have any obvious weaknesses, it bombed big time. Stories that Priyan would remake Kalapani in English for Columbia Pictures turned out to be false. Nonetheless, IR's songs and BGM in this film remain as treasures. This particular song is a favorite of mine due to its grandeur and fantastic interludes.

bb, Nice song. But i have always wondered why the chorus in tamil didnt gel too well with the song. In malayalam it was good and heard from Vijay that the chorus in Hindi is fantastic.
As you rightly said, the BGM was indeed top class.
Added to this hype was also the rumor that in a few theatres, they were going to show the andaman people topless :) At that time, I think Sathyam even had a billboard that had a few topless andaman natives. Of course, we went to see the film and saw nothing of that sort!
I indeed saw some of them in the movie topless. Did you see an edited version :)
The reason for the failure of the movie in tamil and hindi might be due to a plethora of Patriotic movies released at that time. Indian was one, and it had more commercial element attached to it and there by become a block buster movie. But at any point of time, i would rate siraichaalai better than Indian :)

Osho, probably. I think it didn't run because most people saw the edited version :)

Thanks for sharing the wealth of information behind the "Ambikapathy" song. "sINDHANAI SEI MANAME" should be the best song by TMS , followed by the thirupugazh song in Arunagirinathar. I request any dance song from "Konjum salangai" as SOTD.
"Poove nee ....." - Janaki is the undisputed queen of gamakam

siraichaalai deserved to be the flop it was. it was meandering and contrived. fiction and fact did not gel together.
in short a typical Priyan film.
Osho you should be joking;-)))

I remember watching mohanlal topless in some scenes. Is he an andaman native by any chance?
