Subha Pantuvarali -
1) engallam thaeduvatho( old song)
2) antha nAtakam intha maedaiyil
etthanai nAlamma (old song)
3) Theertthakkarai oratthilae( I think)
there may be some more. Any other person may please clarify.

How about vaigaraiyil vaigaikaraiyil? Is it not in shubhapantuvarali?

Sadish,

To me "aayiram thamarai" sounds like Sindhubhairavi. And about the second song you mentioned, i think i read in the forum it is based on Bhavapriya(close to Subha panthuvarali). i may be wrong.Experts clarify.

IR's 'sangilik karuppan' (Film : chandralekha) song and also the song 'ARum adhu Azhamill' in 'muthal vasantham' are set to Vakhulabaranam. The former song is available on my homepage.

reg. Ayiram thAmarai - this is what Hari Govindan wrote to me once :

"he confusion about ayiram thamarai could be because of graha bhedam. As I said, the song is in the G key (i.e., the pa) So, it is possible to get shades of subhapantuvarali (actually, bhavapriya) because the song (in the dhenuka scale) mainly uses the notes ni1, ni2, sa ri1, ga1, ma, pa.

Thus the first two lines are something like:

ayiram thamarai mottukale
sa sa ri ga ri sa sa ri sa ni2

ingu anandha kummigal kottungalen
ni2ni2 sa sa ri ga ri sa sa ri ni sa

But the charanam shifts to using ni1. It is difficult to classify this song under one ragam, which is quite surprising since it sounds so
classical.

Long back I heard that Ayiram thamarai mottukkalae was in Punnaaga Varaali. I dont know the ABCD of raagas anyway.

Actually the song is inspired by a popular folk tune in TN. Raja himself had told this after making this song in some interview. (I heard it in ceylon radio )

I just listened to 'Thedinen Deva Deva' from Ragavendra and "Vaigaraiyil "....
That raag affects me very much...
then...
i heard that 'Paartha Vizhi' from 'Guna' is based on Bhaavani...
is that right ? what other songs are in this raag ?

I got a copy of the GAAYAKA/RAASIKA software yesterday from
Mr. Subramanian of Madras. I have just spent a day playing with
it. It appears to be a useful tool for learners.. especially
those who are keen to learn tracing of notes of songs. To test
the software I tried amaidhiyaana nadhiyinilE Odum..
This song is in HariKambodhi ragam.
I did some fine tuning on the notes I had already established
using good guidance from Sriram Lakshman, entered those sa-ri-ga-ma
notations into GAAYAKA and out came the song in flute. Here is
a sample I recorded in real audio..

The software produces the song in Veena also. I know little
about gamakas so I did not include them for this song. But the software
comes with all types of gamakas and they can be loaded into the song
using appropriate notations. I have included the sruthi box sound in
this recording.. but it can be turned off if not needed. I am now
half way into tuning chittukkuruvi muththam koduththu,
chinna chinna Asai and enna enna vArththaigaLO. They
are also coming out quite well in GAAYAKA.

can u find out whether the song 'endrendum aanathame' from kadal meengal (available in suresh's site in the vintage hits section) is based on maya malava gowlai or sarasaangi? Also I would like to know the difference between these raagas?

MM gowla uses R1 whereas Sarasangi uses R2. All other notes are the same.

I believe the song is in Rishipriya, a janya ragam of kiravani that omits dha completely.

Rathi,

Naurmugaye is set in "Gambira naatai" for most part, ...and the female part sounds like naati (R3)too here and there.....the song has some shades of "Maund" in the interlude, and ends with a line of "Neelambari"....A Great song that stands testimony to ARR's class !
