With regards to P.Kanavu, the only male singer was AMR. The only other famous song I remember is "Pazhagum thamizhe paarthiban magane" and you know there was one Vyjynthimala in it.(Hmmm!!! Could watch movies like "irumbuthirai", "Then nilavu" only for her, 10 more times). There was a solo by MLV.
BTW, any idea which movie "Yellam inba mayam" is from ? Sung by MLV & Rani (?)

Raja, Ghantasala sang all the songs in "Devadas".MSV/TKR are supposed to have taken over the burden of composition from CR Subburaman half-way through the movie. Guess "Ulage Maayam vaazhve maayam" was MSV's first composition in Tamil/Telugu. My favourite in this movie is "thuNinthapin maname thuyaram koLLathe".Kalyani Raagam, known for its romantic effect has been used beautifully to express sorrow. Incidently, there is a duet by Ghantasala/Rani which sounds very similar to "uthaya vaanin ithaya nilave", but can't get the wordings for the pallavi.

Sriram & Ramki:
Thanks for the info. What ragam is Yellam Inba Mayam based on?
Vyjanthimala fixation ?? ;-)
I have always found her to be irritating -reminds me of Vanjikottai Valiban.. and the dance duet. Lets see where this thread leads and the songs one will encounter on the way :-))

Sriram
I like "Uravum illai pakayum illai ondrume illai" song in Devados.
This comes immediately after the Savithiri's wedding.
Devados sings with a bottle and Savithiri will be standing in a small medu. The picturization is excellent.
Uravum illai pakayum illai ondrume illai
ullathellam niye allal vere gathillai (by seeing the bottle)
iniyavum thunai ilaai
savithiri:
yenathuvalvil puntha jothi yenke sentrayo
ithayam kulira sevaiseiyum ninaivum vinanathe
en kanavum palanathe
..............
devados:
mudivillatha thunbam athilum inbam verethu
keduthiseivar thanilum mellam nanbarverethu
adayamudiya porulin mithu aasaithirathu
abimanam marathu
savithiri
ullam nirainthal jalam valinthu veruvaliyekum
kumaripukayum yerimalaiyum or nal amithu akkum
manathil ponkum thuyaravellam valiyum nallethu
oru mudivuthanethu
I will get you the ithayavanil uthaya nilave yenke pokirai ni yenke pokirai. I have the song with me.

Raja, Does it sound like Shanmugapriya ?
Irritated with Vyjynthi? Yenna saar, the epitome of feminity , ippadi manasa puNN paduthaatheenga :-))
She always reminds me of "Nilavum malarum" from thennilavu ( a brilliant composition by AMR). This song mostly loiters around mohanam but other notes start creeping in. Interesting to note that IR's interludes in "Thenmallippoove" (by TMS and SJ) resembled those in "Nilavum...", esp. the flute piece.
"Nenjil kudiyirukkum" from Irumbuthirai is another song that keeps springing to mind, more for the wonderfully spontaneous acting by Sivaji and Vyjynthi after the song. This scene is something that I rank one of the best ever, with the lovers discussing "sweet-little-nothings" and the two artistes doing a great job.
Raja, the above scene is for you, watch this and you will revise your opinions :-)). Too much !!!

It's good to see action here in this thread. About TMS as MD: You mentioned kai viralil piRandhadhu naadham and naan kadavuLai kaNdEn en kuzhandhai vadivilE from the movie, `Kallum Kaniyaagum' as being compositions by TMS. But I think MSV is the MD for that movie. TMS only acted and sang in that movie. andha iraNdu paadalgaLum romba urukkamaanavai. The picturizations are also quite touching. neenga andha padam paarththadhuNdaa?

SK,so you have reached Singapore. All the best for your new assignment.
I think the MD was TMS, I think I remember seeing the poster somewhere in Madras. I have not seen the movie. The songs are really superb.
Just realised that "Theru vanthathu polirunthathu nee vantha pothu, bothai vanthathu...." sung by TMS for MSV sounds very much similar to clarinet interlude in "Kai viralil piranthathu..."

Sathiya Keerthi,
Aaha, malarum ninaivugal. Sorry, neenga illathappo indha DF gangai nadhiya irundhu koovam aagivittathu. At least there are one or two threads like this hidden from miscreants.
Remember you got me started a long time ago on the Kannadhaasan and VM symposium"? We went through all 10 topics and they are now in our archives. Check them out and tell me what you think.
Good to see you back.

Sriram,
That was a sweeping state-of-the-state address aimed at all the fan club fights. Remember I mentioned this thread as an exception. I'm nostalgic for the time in the DF when we discussed music and not people's statements about each other. Go look at "New Releases by ARR" thread, the stench it raises is suffocating.
Anyway, thanks for the list of haunting melodies you gave. I have most of them and am scouting the rest. Keep it alive.

Sriram, Udhaya, Raja and Ramki:
Thanks for the warm welcome. For one year+ I was
in India and now I am back to Singapore. While in
India I had a terribly slow internet connection +
an erratic email system. I did follow the forum
activities here and there. I even made a few
contributions once in a while, under some
pseudonames (Sriram, you can't blackmail me anymore),
but nothing worth talking about. I have now
returned to Singapore on a permanent basis as a
faculty member of National University of Singapore,
and I hope to take part actively again.
Udhaya:
I did fully follow all those Kannadhasan-VM
threads. Excellent work! You showed a LOT of
patience. Those threads revealed (at least to me)
many nice contributions by VM that I was not aware
of. Its good to see you not losing faith in this
discussion forum and continuing to keep some
useful discussions going.
Sriram:
I still think `Kallum Kaniyaagum' is by MSV. Don't
you feel the MSV touch in all those songs? When I
have more time I will write about the songs and the movie. My email id appears below. I would be
delighted if you include my name in your (+VK's)
mailing list. Did you receive the email I sent
from India a few weeks ago?
Ramki:
Since you were in Singapore and listened to a lot
of radio programmes while you were here, let me ask
this `urgent' question. Do you know details of any
radio stations that relay cricket commentaries
from UK? I am so eager to follow the world cup
matches which start tomorrow.
