1) ARR records separtely all instruments. THEN he adds them One by One to the Track.
2) And one more thing is that he sings the song himself initially and then shows this to the singer. It will be easy for the singer to sing then
3) If the Singer sings a line of Song and only Half The LIne is OK, then ARR takes the OK part, uses it and asks the Singer to try the Next half again.
One More thing is that he does'nt shout at the Singer if he does it wrong, unlike other MD's.

what next-you will have them singing word by word before ok'ing them.no wonder he is taking ages to bring out an album.

cosmician,
I agree with you there. But if you notice 2 contrasts. Lets compare 2 of my personal fav.'s in the last 2 decaded which I think are relevant.
"paruvame pudhiya paadal" was a well picturized song and look at the seconds per frame it should easily be 25-40 secs for every frame.
Look at "thee thee" it should be like 3-4 secs for every frame.
On the other hand compare " in the closet" which has some segments at 2 frames a second
tfm people are already comdemning the "thee thee" style picturization as a mtv corrupted thing and say things move so fast that they are unable to relax into the song.
whereas the latest trend of video taking is have quick swift visual movement that are an editors delight to keep viewers interest up at all times.
so in short tfm audience have a long way to go to in the first place decide if they want such kind of videos or not. if they see emf's "unbelievable" they might not want such videos at all.
MR and PCS have brought about the right kind of balance in speed.
I also understand that ur point is more about camera movement of the scene being captured which shows a drama stage like appearance.
I think having cameras on small cranes which can move like a dinosaurs neck is thing that we may lack. we also dont have the latest handicams around. I have heard that some cameras are 3 lacs a day rental. I guess people like MR who buy stars at a cheap price can only afford this.

Bharath...
Of course, we wouldn't like jerky Camera movements and flash cuts just for the sake of it !
The "Uyire" song in Bombay...if u notice carefully...the camera is always in motion keeping pace with the song..and when there is a cut...the next frame takes off in an angle and movement that heightens the emotions of the song for eg. when Manisha's abaya (arabic for the black robe worn by muslim women) gets caught in the anchor...that scene is perfectly framed and the camera moves from the anchor and follows Manisha as she frees herself from the abaya and runs forward. The whole movement is so poetic...I think Rajiv Menon was the Dir of Photography.
And you are right, we lack the equipment and thinking too.
Prabhu Deva and Raju Sundaram have creatively made up for many inadequacies through their choreography.

A song from Taj Mahal has a song with 3 sources of inspiration, i feel. Karisal Tharisal - start of the song from 'I Believe' by Tears for Fears, interlude a small piece from Vivaldi's 4 seasons then the continuation from "I'll be there" a song by Michale Bolton and the end is a beautiful adaptation (which is also the Taj Mahal theme I think) of Genesis' last portion of Domino from Invisible Touch, the same piece was used by YSR in Rishi, Rishi, Rishi. Any analysis of this fantastic ballad from ARR?!!!! This seems like a beautiful experimentt!

yaaro,
u don't seem to hear arr music really. anyway, the special thing about arr's music is, that first of all he 'sounds' different. that's why many people critizise his music with the sentence 'he sounds always same' and when they hear a rahman song, without first knowing that it is from rahman they say 'oh...that can only be rahman's work...'
well, and there it is. he has a 'sound' of his own, and this he has developed out in his career...and how? thru experimenting with different sounds and instruments. do u remember the beats at the beginning or even throughout the song 'columbus columbus'? i must really admit i haven't heard those kinds of beats before. perhaps many mds have done it, but AFTER arr did it. (this i only mean for indian mds. it is surely possible that arr is inspired a lot by world music).
or just take 'duet'...his experiments with the saxophone...i mean, sure, the instrument saxophone has always been there, but it had never been used so by any indian mds for a film.
'love birds' - that kind of rap or r&b or whatever u call it, by apache indian and arr himself. wasn't that something new in indian film? same with the 'pettai rap' song in 'kaadhalan' (okay, if those songs were qualitivily good is another question...but here we are talking about experiments)
'satrangi re' from 'dil se'...that was an experimental song too...that instrument used in it...i don't really remember the exact name of it, something like flamingo....something, anyway, that i haven't heard before too.
songsof 'sangamam' - have classical songs ever been so really enjoyable before? i mean, eventhough classical songs are great music (no doubt), commercially they are not very good, but in 'sangamam' rahman showed us how even that was possible.
'taal' - wah! what a genius album! 'ni main samaj ghaye' - number one experimental song! never heard before... or the softness of 'kariye na'...or also 'ramta jogi'...
then, like someone told before his experiment in 'karisal tharisal' from 'taj mahal', with 3 absolutely different sequences in one song, blended typically by rahman...
then there is alai payuthey....the whole album had one 'sound'...and that was a really kind of 'sharp' sound...can't even describe it...
those were all just a few examples of rahman's experiments in music....it's not just a simple saying that rahman has revolutioned indian music, there is a lot of truth behind that sentence...
ah..yes, and i heard in his coming film 'yelelo' he is going to experiment with irish music! there we have it...
actually there a lot of other arr fans who have dedicated themselves a hundred times more than me to arr's music, who can give u endless examples of arr's experiments...
so my dear yaaro, this is what i had to say. now what do u have to say to this?

well marcel,
sorry to say, you have said nothing new!
I have said a few things said by you as well.
From: yaaro (@ spider-loh-tf084.proxy.aol.com) on: Wed Aug 15 13:27:41 EDT 2001
all said and done, althogh I am a HCIRF, one thing even we must agree is that main experiments of ARR has been with sound-rather the way his music sounds.he brings this about with clever use of synthetic sounds and alien sounding singers...

Yaaro,
An MD is 'supposed' to experiment with Sounds, voices (use of unconventional sounding singers), styles of music(carnatic, western classsical , rap, north and south indian folk, latin - u name it !), presentation, etc...which IMHO has been elucidated in each of Rahman's albums to date.
so, what other types of 'experiments' do u say that Rahman should have done and has failed ?

dear yaaro,
i just read what 'ragapriyan' said, and there is absolutely nothing left what i could add.
and where is the difference between 'ARR has been experimenting with sound' and '...with the way his music sounds'? i didn't quite get that.
and what is a HCIRF?
i would like to say more, but i must wait for ur response to 'ragapriyan' and my messages. so, till next time.
p.s.: and if u want to discuss more about arr u are heartly welcome to arr fans group at yahoo!

ragapriyan,
I merely said marcel has mentioned nothing new in this thread-he is obviously new here-or else he would not be asking what HCIRF means!(ard core IR fan)
he specifically mentioned my name -that is why I responded. If you sisi IR experiments thread, you will see what i thinkj are musical experiments-I have given so many sp egs...
