KVM:
It is sad to hear that he has passed way. He was one of the greatest indeed.
Who can forget his gem, "Aayiram Nilave Vaa.." in Admaippen ?....especially his tabla magic in this song ?

bb, Please check if Kalyaaniyin Kanavan is by KVM. Also there are no songs from his national award winning Kandhan Karunai and Shankarabharanam.

That is right. Two of VJ's three national awards were under KVM's direction.

VJ did a great job in the Telugu song 'aanathi neeyara' for KVM in Swathikiranam. The ending part of this song is IMO really attractive, and stands out really well. Of course, the whole song is really great. I think the Raaga used is AmritVarshini. Please correct me if I am wrong.
BTW - for exactly which song in Sankarabharanam did VJ and SPB get the national award??

LV,
The last 30 seconds of Anathineeyara is just incredible. VJ's award was for mAnasa canchararE in Sankarabaranam. A contrast is Anathineeyara is a long song and Manasa canchararE is very short one. I don't remember what song SPB got the award for.

Neel:
Yes really, the last 30 seconds are great. Whenever I listen to this song, my parents crib a lot, because I rewind this part atleast 10 times :-)))).
U feel that the song is going is just going to end because there is such a long aalaap at the end. But just then, the rhythm kicks in again for a short time, and the excitement is intensified.
(BTW: This is a very bad description of such a good song - cant find better words however :-)) )
Even the CHitra SPB song from Swathikiranam is good - Pranati Pranati Pranati.
I also remember another Telugu movie by KVM whose music I LOVE like anything:Sampoorna Ramayanam. Lovely songs by PS.

WOW, he has made such a great music. Somehow I feel, we havent given the due acknowledgement to this man. Esp. the present generation. All these years we talked about MSV, kannadasan and hindi music directors, but we always have downplayed KVM. One way its good, in the process we didnt degrade him. Anyway he is seemed to have got the due respect from telugu fans due to films like Sankarabaranam.
I would this would be the biggest loss in TFM after kannadasan and for TF after MGR.

There are lot of Gems by KVM in Telugu like Saptapadi, Shubhodayam, Srutilayalu, Sirivennela..... His music is really like SiriVennela (Rich Moonlight...) In the last movie,
there are lot of good songs by PS and SPB. K Viswanath has chosen to work with KVM for most of his masterpieces...
May his soul rest in peace...

KVM was special to many TFM personalities...
TMS's first song for Sivaji was konjum kiLiyAna peNNai
(Movie: kooNdukkiLi; MD: KVM). It was only after listening to
this song MGR decided to have TMS sing for him. (The first song
of TMS for MGR was eththanai kAlamthAn EmAtruvAr (Movie:
malaikkaLLan, MD: SMSN)). So, KVM was instrumental in getting
TMS to sing for both Sivaji and MGR.
SPB's first TFM song was with KVM. Later, the boost that SPB
got out of KVM's songs in Shankarabharanam is well known.
Whenever Kannadhasan produced his own movies, he usually resorted
to KVM for music. In return, KVM had great love for Kannadhasan's lyrics. (It was this excessive love that made KVM be a bit indifferent to vAli during vAli's early years in TFM.)
APN's heavy attachment/dependence on KVM's music is well known.
The songs which came in their combination in the 60s are all
classics.
Thevar always insisted on KVM-Kannadhasan-TMS-PS combination in
all his movies.
KVM was the one who first gave a full song to LR Easwari. (Movie:
nalla idaththu sambandham, 1958). She got 4 solos in that movie.
(For some reason, it seems KVM used to call LR Easwari as 'rAjA'.)
LRE, however was practically unknown till 1961 DeepawaLi when
pAsa malar was released with vArAi en thOzhi. It seems KVM
heard the song even before the movie was released, called her and
told her that her career was going to become bright after that song.

My deep condolences to the berieved family. KVM has inscribed so much of impact on the listeners with some gems that many old timers are still cherishing in memory of their bygone years. A few years back , actess padmini was so keen and requested the Ganagai Amaran group to sing "Un kaNNil nIr vazinthAl" in a musical program at Stamford. I could see the kind of passion and earnestness which had she carried from her younger years for such songs. She helped the singer continue the song when he could not sing more than few lines . KVM is believed to be the trend-setter of folk songs in TFM which received an overwhelming response as IR rediscovered the traces and set the course in mid 70s. So much of KVM's contributions and experiences have been discussed and exchanged in this page, but still i belive we can go on for ever. I feel many a times that i should have belonged at least two generations earlier to have enjoyed his vintage, romantic songs in its essence

did MSV work for KVM at any point of time? what was the relationship between the two?

bb, MSV functioned as a chorus singer in some KVM songs in the late 40s. KVM was generous towards the poverty-stricken MSV and this was never forgotten by MSV. MSV refused offers from Devar stating that this would mean infringement on KVM's domain.

It is really sad to hear the demise of
'Thirai Isai-th-thilagam'
After Sankarabaranam, he scored few films in Tamil. 'Vaanavillin' was a very good song by SPB
Even Director R Sundararajan used KVM in his
film 'Thoongatha kannindru ondru'

Read the last part of this page..
http://newtfmpage.com/my/md/kvm2.html
for details of MSV's first meeting with KVM. They
had an excellent relationship. There were even
occasions where a producer approached MSV for music
but MSV recommended KVM's name.
Continuing my previous posting on contributions
of KVM to other TFM personalities..
I think Panju Arunachalam's first separate song
(without the "Kannadhasan" attachment) in TFM
was with KVM.. maNamagaLE marumagaLE vA vA
(even now it is a very popular song for wedding
occasions). The song is in the movie sAradhA (1961).
But I am not entirely sure about this fact. Perhaps
Manisegaran or someone can shed light on this.
In a recent SUN TV interview I heard PS mention
that, with KVM, recording of a song was usually
effortless. She said there were cases where she
sang the song in the "first take" and was waiting
to hear feedback from KVM for improvement on the
"next take", but found that he had already left,
after being fully satisfied. She quoted solla
cholla inikkudhadA as an example.

sk, I happened to see that interview too. Yeah, you're right, PS said that he usually teaches how to sing and once he feels that the singer has "gotten" it, he doesn't hang around...
