What is the contribution of ARR to film music in the past 10 years

  Who likes to spend time in a retrospective way for good feeling of nostalgia, songs except Roja and may be 3 or 4 other movies, to listen those songs?
  
  Venkat - since u asked, let me ask you a counter-question. Have u conducted a survey to reach such a conclusion? What was the size of your sample population? How did you reach the conclusion that A R Rahman's songs won't last long in public memory? If its your individual choice, its fine, but one can't really generalise in this way, I say.
  
  But ARRs work has been acclaimed by Andrew Lloyd Weber to Naushad to Zaakir Hussain to several others. But let us leave that part aside. His innovations are obvious to any discerning listener. Also there are sveral soulful and moving melodies he has created...ARR isnt only for hop-skip-jump songs.
  
  Amongst MDs of the new generation, ARR is surely the best.

  I agree with u about the lasting songs of ARR.
  Well I do listen to all MD's songs, and I find it that now a days songs are not long lasting are cannot be heard again and again.
  Well there are IR songs even new ones can be heard again or his old ones still look very fresh.
  Best I can say Annakili for folk based, Hip-hops agni natchatrium, My dear Martandan....(list goes on)....can be heard anytime and it still looks as if new.
  More interesting ores of IR are Clasiical based ones thay are simply the best.

  I can t stop relating things to cricket/Tennis.What ARR has done is equivalant to Borg s contribution to Swedish tennis.He brought the Ice-hockey/Football crazy nation to Tennis.You had 2 No. 1s(from Sweden) after he retired and there was a time when the top 75had 23 Swedish players.
  
  IR like Becker created a sensation but never managed a stream of German players into the circuit by pulling the folks from football.(there was Michael Stich but afterwards ...? Keifer ?)

  I could not agree to this. Definitely ARR did not make music-mania. He is just a great person who bear the torch. Influence of IR   -   The number of cassette shops that started growing after IR became so popular (whether they are for piracy or not is not the matter here). Doesn't it show a kind of mania for music among the commoners?
  
  But imho borg should be equated to VR + KVM it is these who created a sensation (esp. VR) amongst the commoners about the cine music, they are the real ones who created the music mania among the mass. At the same time we have to remember the contribution of likes of MKTs who infact STARTED such a thing. Inspite of MKT i wud still consider the music mania amongst the masses was created by VR and KVM only. IR and ARR are followers of it alone.

  I do not know whether Rod LAver s acheivements created a tennis mania in Australia.But VR (in this aspect) must be Laver ,clearly belonging to the previous gen.
  
  MKT ,PUC,TRM must be Renshaw brothers of tennis.
  
  Today you see thousands of yougsters aspiring to become Rehman.D Iman (I have little regards for his music though) said that Roja inspired him last week in an interview.Today ,whether you like it or not he is somebody in TFM.Deva had to switch his style.(Interestingly this reminds you of an Older Salim Jaffer trying to imitate and younger Akram!)

  Today's Indian Express has an article which says, "Harris Jayaraj Rules TFM".
  
  In a nutshell, the greatest contribution of ARR is
  (1) He dethroned IR from TFM ; IR was sitting like an emperor till then
  
  (2) Made even the likes of Deva, Bharathwaj and HJ a chance to rule;he too ruled for a few years
  
  (3) for that, he gave credit to sound engineers too

  btw.. i surely agree w/ OISG on arr creating music mania.
  agreed.. ir's music saw a burst (in the +ve sense!!!) in cassette sales..
  
  but it was ARR who drew kids and elders alike w/ his music like Peter Pan. Was a kid then and i just pestered my mom for a casette if it had Rajni's pic on it.(have got over that!)...
  Only after i heard Roja did i start enjoying music.. i mean if i just heard a song, i could tell if it was ARR's or not! (as a music-what's-that-???- kid)!!!
  
  so i shud say he created music mania. He got ppl to sit up and take notice of music, reinvented sound, made it completely unorthodox (try attempting to make a song w/ no instruments in 1 of ur early assignments).. {huff puff gasp}..

  OISG & Kupps, There was so much tennis before Borg. Apart from the obvious Laver, haven't you heard of Rosewall, Newcombe,Roach all of australia) & prior to that the famous French musketeers ( Barocha, lacoste et al) And the incomparable Bobby Riggs( who it seems once went around accepting bets from spectators at wimbledon when he was two sets down & then went on to thoroughly decimate the opposition A triple crown winner to boot at wimbledon )

  The greatest achievement of Borg though is winning ferom Clay to grass back to back four times( have I got the stats right.) But Don't u think that agassi's achievement of winning all the slams in different surfaces should rank quite high up there in list of achievements.( When Laver had the slams three were in grass only Roland Garros was clay.
  Sorry for digression
  But the fact is just as Visu_Ramu were there - & had a glorious reign -before IRthere wer other great players before Borg .period.

  I request to reconsider this, entire country is looking forwared for arr's music. He did create music-mania!....arr and his music is most popular thing known all over India.
