Refer to last week interview in Sun TV 'Star Show' conducted by Uma with Viramutthu.
Vairamutthu, in his usual style, thanked Tamil, Wondered 'Man Vasanai', Praised Bharathiraja for his introduction, but never quoted a single word or thanked Illayaraja for adding mesmerizing tunes to most of his songs.
I doubt whether Kumudham news is true..

IMHO,
this proposed / expected re-union of IR and VM would not be so great for TFM to cherish. It might be useful for people like GV to market their product, thats all otherwise not much might happen.

I am more interested to hear/see IR+BR combo than IR+VM combo. I am still skeptical about IR+VM combo, may be I am wrong but my instict says that there is nothing outstanding comes from them. Good MDs can motivate the MD. Lyrics comes after the tune (atleast these days). Hence I am not sure. More of a marketting strategy, I think, knowing GV.

Totally rubbish news. Illayaraja does not require viramuthu to create wonders. Raja is beyond lyrics. Infact he doesn't require lyrics to create mesmarising tunes. kumudam is not like BBc to take news as true...

BBC is also not uththama puthiran.
Remember they showed the clipping of serbia and termed it as INDIAN GOVT. MILITARY ACTIVITIES in Kashmir and was forced to apologize after shown that that was a wrong with a load of evidences?

Most of IR's early hits before 1983 or so were penned amply by Gangai Amaran, M.G. Vallaban, Muthulingam, Kannadasan, Valee, Bhaskar, Na. Kamarasan, Panchu Arunachalam, Pulamaipitthan. There are some more lyricists who wrote some rare IR gems but they did only a few and I do not remember their names. Even Kamal wrote a song for IR...and I do not remember what it was...Certainly at that time no single lyricist dominated and IR was versatile with many lyricists.
A few Examples:
Kannan Oru Kai Kuzhanthai (Badhrakali) by Kannadasan
Azhahiya Kanne.. (Uthiripookkal) by Kannadasan
Van Mehanghale..(Pudhiya Varpukkal) by Kannadasan
Chinnanchiru Vayathil...(Meendum Kokila) by Kannadasan
Kovil Mani Osai thannai (Kizhakke Pohum Rail) by Kannadasan
En Vanilay...(Johnny) by Kannadasan
Ramanin Mohanam... (Netrikkan) by Kannadasan
----Note: the above are gems folks!-------
Kadhal Oviyam...(Alaigal Oyvathillai) by Panchu Arunachlam
Ananda Ragam Ketkum Kalam..
Poonthalir Aada... (Paneer Pushpangal) by Gangai Amaran
Thamthananam... (Puthiya Varppukal) BY Gangai Amaran
Yen Iniya Pon Nilave...(Moodu Pani) by Gangai Amaran
Chenthoora poove...(16 Vayathinilae) by Gangai Amaran)
Kuzhloodhum Kannanukku.. (Mella thirandadu Kadavu) by Valee
Vilakku Vecha Nerathilae.. (Munthanai Mudichu) by Na. Kamarasan
Chinnanchiru Kiliyae.. (Mundanai Mudichu) by Muthulingham
Aanandha Then Katru...(Manipoor Mamiyar) by Muthulingham
Idhayam Pohuthe... (Puthiya Varpukkal) by Muthulingham
Ilankiliye.......(Sankarlal) by Pulamaipitthan
Uchchi Vahuntheduthu... (Rosapoo Ravikkaikari) by Pulamaipitthan
Annakkili Unnai theduthe (Annakkili) by Panchu Arunachalam
Ponnoviyum....(Kazhuhu) by Panchu Arunachalam
All songs (Priya) by Panchu Arunachalam
All songs (Azhage Unnai Aarathikiren) by Valee
Kan Malarhalin... (Thaipongal) by M. G. Vallaban
Even IR himself had penned some melodious songs:
Samyal Padame... (Manipoor Mamiyar)
Poda Poda Pokke....(Uthiripookkal)
A few more I do not remember...
In fact, Kannadasan, Gangai Amaran and Panchu Arunachalam should be enormously credited for penning some of the beautiful songs that brought IR to the top. It seems to me that VM entered just about IR reached his top, sometime in 1982..I am not sure of the exact year...
Therefore, the idea that IR + VM combo has produced the popular hits is a myth. But there is no doubt that VM wrote some really wonderful pieces for IR that helped sustain IR for another 7 years or so in the late 1980s. But I would think with VM's arrival most talented lyricists were thrown to the background...One wonders how many more good songs that the other lyricists could have produced. This tells me that IR+VM is not a necessary condition, although it would certainly be an entertaining one.
VM's talent is in his verbal aerobatics using the ethuhai and monai styles in his songs..and he is the king because of his deep knowledge of Tamil Grammer than probably anyone else today in TFM field.
VM came into picture only in the 80s. I wonder what was the first song VM wrote for IR. Is it "Pon Malai Pozhuthu.." in Nizhalghal ? I am not sure....
So the popular misconception that only IR + VM combination produced the best songs is not historically true. IMHO IR seemed to have given much more melodious hit songs (in terms of sheer numbers) with other lyricists than with VM.
Just my few cents

NagaS:
You are right on the first one. Sorry for that mistake.
But the second one is according to CD label :Tamil Film Melodies, By Music India, Inc., CDF 078 and it says lyricist as Panchu Arunachalam.
Can someone verify it ? Thanks.

Simple Mathematics...
VM has given more hits than IR after their seperation in 85. 'punnagai mannan' the last movie they worked together.
adding to that VM has proved the best lyric writer in the country 4 times, only javed akthar equals the record i believe. this is one that we got to get proud. and VM recvd the national award thrice without IR(roja, karuthamma-pavithra, sangamam)
IR is a genius. no second thought about this.
but good lyrics always helped him to take his best of melodies to people.
He will never need VM in his life here on, but he will surely need quality lyrics atleast to the standard of that in 'kaasi' to make his tunes hear good.
I am sure, we can never get another mudhal mariyaadhai, kaadhal oviyam, sindhu bairavi or punnagai mannan again in our life.
I almost broke down one day when i recvd a mail from VM that the news was a false one. He had no problem joining with IR, but the news was a false one.

I am very glad to hear about the news. Hope this news will be true. As per my point of view they are performed very well when they were working separatly but we didn't get 100% quality either side like 80's songs.
I pray to god VM & IR should have to work together otherwise we are all great losser if they are not work together.
