How do you rate Ilaiya raja , the singer.

I have a special liking to songs sung by Raja.

One of the best i have heard is from "Poomani".
"En Paattu , En Paattu". Melody defined.

The list of solo and duet songs by Raja is endless. Off the duets, "Saamak kozhi Koovudhamma " is a wonderful song. Raja excels in this song.

How is He rated as a singer!

  Have anybody listened to Ennai thalatta varuvalo....IR version...please listen to this and u will be amazed by his Tamil diction and he has sung the song effortlessly....comparing with HH.....IMHO

  But how do you explain the pathos songs sung by IR, esp in Rajkiran movies? They did not have great tunes and orchestration.

  IR's voice only suits sad songs & used to suit 4 karthik, never mind his voice, his songs (especially the old ones) are really a golden tenor, especially SPB & SJ, no other singer can beat that!!!,
  
  those were the days, when there were proper decent music, nowadays people like deva,sirpy,hariharan,udit,shanker,srinivas should be in the koovam, or is that still too good for them.
  
  SPB is greatest singer ever, equally as great as pavaroti!!

  Deepak, I disagree with you. IR did well in "Punnakaiyil Minsaram" song.
  Basically good MD is a good Singer. But their voice sweetness matters (from MSV to ARR).

  ANSWER YOUR CONSCIENCE:
  
  Listen to SPB and IR versions of AVM film song "Naanaaga Naanillai Thaaye"
  
  Listen to Hari and IR versions of "Ennai Thaalata varuvaalo"
  
  Both available in the same album of the respective films.
  
  Throw away your bias, be true to yourself and later to your conscience and you will get the 'real answer'.
  IR is a good composer but NOT fit to be a good singer. He needs more shruthi and rhythm alignemnt. Even the least listener will tell this!
  
  Some body was talking about tamil diction of IR in contrast to HH. By the way where is IR bothered about tamil diction? He was bothered only with orchestration overdoing the song and lyric, for which he badly preceedes ARR and others.

  its good that IR, the singer, is tried to be benchmarked with likes of SPB, HH.
  
  Definitely SPB is far better than IR given any forte of singing and almost same is the case for HH except ofcourse pronounciation. Do you want to know IR's care in pronouncing thamizh as well as sanskrit? please carefully listen to janani janani. I bet no other MD-singer in india, at present, would be so much careful in singing such songs(i am not talking about the likes of MSVs). i doubt even many singers of present days would fail to sing that song with proper diction. I would proudly as well as sadly say that, given such a trend, IR is the LAST MD-Singer who pronounces the language properly(or takes care in diction of a language). I heard people saying IR's voice in kannada too did not have diction problem(it could have accent problem).
