Hey Anand' doesn't the song Roja roja ( KD)ring a bell. Its the exact duplicate of an old hindi song!!
What about the Beverly Hills Cop BGM that that ARR used as BGM in LOve Birds?
Or I suppose u would say its just lifting of rythem?

Ram:
It's the IR fans who are afraid to facethe facts. Example, ARR is the #1 music Tamil director today, but none of IR fans can admit that. They will try to tell you Deva is, or IR still is because he's more original.
As per Times of India , the snippets in Saturday Times always refer them as:
ARR - The No.1 Music director in India
Deva - The No. 1 Music director in the "south" !!!

scottraja: Roja roja is vaguely similar to one of the BGM themes in "Top Gun". However, the similarity ends with the first two words.

Roja.. Roja.. sounds similar to a stanza(it ends something like '...en manathai yaar arivaar') in the song 'Sippi irukuthu...' from 'Varumayin Niram Sivapu' by MSV

Vimal,
Good to know that you are a ARR Fan. Respect your opinion. Have you listened to IR's music at all ?
If you have then may be you like the current style of music more than what the other MDs have done. Fair enough. But to come up with vague remarks does not justify anything.
Music directors like MSV, IR have given tonnes of good music to TFM. If you are young and in your twenties, probably 10 or 15 years later you will appreciate every good song of TFM. Right now, all that you will like is "xyz's Top Ten".

hi folks:
I am neither an ARR fan nor an IR fan. I just love pleasant/good music. I want to share a few thoughts with the group. Please note that I may be wrong at times, correct me... IR came from a village. There he had enough exposure to folk music and associated instruments. And the kind of music-composing experience he had in the early stages was to compose for his brother Bhaskar's stage plays, played in villages. And he worked hard his way, to attain his pinnacle. He learned Western once he came to Madras and he mastered it. We all should be proud that he is the first Thamizhian/Indian/Asian(am not sure of this one)to compose for 'symphony'! There is no doubt about it. He has a rich herritage of experience which is reflected in his BGM. If we observe, his initial movies did not have exceptional BGM. So I would say expetince has some contribution to BGM.
We cannot forget his BGMs to Mahendran's movies like Johny and Mullum Malarum, which the director Mahendran himself cherished in one of his TV interviews. Every person has a bright period in his career. I feel that IR has done enough and his bright period started ending, may be accidentally, when ARR entered in to TFM. He is also trying to adopt hisself to the contemporary music, by resorting to synthesizers and the like, which is evident from his recent movies (Kathalukku Mariyadhai) for example. I am against this. He should be what he is. That's how things are going for IR.
ARR, on the other hand was brought up in cities and he started his career with playing keyboard and using the like. Definitely he is good at them. He worked with Rock Bands like Nemesis and as Keyboardist with almost all the music directors. Like IR, he also brought a revolution in TFM. When Roja was released the music was completely new. The quality and techniques of recording took a leap! Definitely they are also an important dimension to music. People liked that change and are still liking. I don't know much about grammars/idoms of music. When I talked to some of my friends good at music, they told that the chord patterns ARR uses are new and innovative. His album VanteMataram is great one! A guitarist, living in UK, I don't remember his name, was excited by the song 'thai manne vanakkam' in that album, felt that it had so much of enery in it that he had plans playing it on guitar! We can add a lot.
I am hearing this complaint that ARR's music is repeating itself. There are two faces to it. One is the story/director. It has to provoke music in him. For example, all the scores ARR made for Manirathnam were great hits! DilSe especially is a master piece, in my openion. At times you may run out of ideas. He is not a machine to give a triain of hits. If you take IR for that matter I don't how many of 700+ films were hits. The other dimension is media, publicity, music awarness and expectations. People today talk more about music than before, because of various reasons. In my child-hood, we never used to buy pre-recorded cassetes. Rarely we'll record a collection. But now it has become a potential business. So, what I am trying to say is that the scinario now very different. Even a slight mistake will be amplified like anything, which ARR mentioned in one of interviews that 'if i perfom X people are expecting 10X from me'. During IR days it was not so intense. If we take all of IR's songs and listen to them, we'll definitely find similarities in his songs, atleast I have encountered many.
Have written enough, wandering around. In essence, this topic itself doesn't make much sense to me. We may compare contemporary artists. But not these two maestros. They are great in their own strides.
Thanks For Reading

Which is the greater honor? Your music getting played in MTV or your composing Symphony? Please enlighten me.
Ram & Pala, Dont take my comments to its literal meaning. Take it easy. Ram, You are against my analysing music right down to every instrument. But u always seem to analyse what words I write in here. This discussion board is for analysing music, I believe. Eventhough I use such sentences, I've never added a baseless argument. Unlike "I am Back". You cant stand my comparing ARR with Deva and I cant stand your comparing IR with ARR.
Yet another polite request.. sensitive, weak-hearted guys dont participate in this discussion board ;-)
Yes, ARR stays on top in all the countdowns. He is "The Music Director" right now. IR is out of the race. He is composing music for some of his friends out of obligations. Now the race is b'ween ARR, Thenisai thendral Deva, Vadanaatu Isai Puyal Anu Malik. It would be more relevant to have a discussion board comparing these guys.
Bye

Mahesh,
IR started using synthesizers frm Punnaigai Mannan. Long before the arrival of ARR. Kathaluku Mariyadhai music sounds like any other IR's work. I dont see any difference.

AR is a rubbish.Do not know to compose his own music.Always try to copy from western countries. It is really shameful. But IR is different. He is the musical genius.Bollywood MD called him as "God Of Music".There is no another genius in the film music.Only one genius and that is our Maestro Illaiyaraaja.

U are damn right Mahendran.
People with good music sense wont acknowledge
ARR as A composer at all.
He is just another good music mixer and arranger.....
....mixing known succesful tunes to churn up
composite songs.Of course this formula wont fail
with youngsters.
Another point of ARR is the tunes he STEALs are not from mainstream songs(very popular western singers) and not the recent ones either.
This enables him to hide what he does.
Any person with heavy listening of western english
music can testify to this.(like my good friend)
