  What is this ? Pl try to be sure when talking about R O S. Kalaiyum neeye...is not Sohini..but based on Basant Bahar. Just look at..kattrum neeye kadalum neeye..

  I have a very basic question. I hope someone can clarify.
  Suppose I take a raga like Jonpuri which is a
  janyam of Natabairavi and has
  
  Aro: sa ri ma pa ni Sa and Avro: Sa ni da pa ma ga ri sa
  
  Within the same line of a song, does the raga allow the direct
  ascent from ga to ma? Or, is it that one has to
  necessarily descend (say to ri) and then only ascend to ma?

  IR has used a rare raga 'Gana Murthi' in the movie Sindhu Bhairavi as BGM,I also attened a carnatic concert by IR called 'PanchaMuki' there he sang and also VVS played the song 'Gana Murthaye'

  SK....based on the aro. and ava. that u have indicated, in general, a phrase in the ascent (arohana prayogam) , in jounpuri, cannot have ga followed by ma. I'm not sure about the particular example that u have taken, but some ragas allow a particular kind of deviation from the aro. and ava.
  For example vasantha has the following pattern :
  
  aro : s g3 m1 d2 n3 S
  ava : S n3 d2 m1 g3 r1 s
  
  Though r1 does not appear in the aro., a phrase such as s r s n d...is allowed in vasantha.
  Here " s r " is against the aro. but the phrase gets down to "s" immediately. So this phrase is not considered as a phrase in the asecent (i.e. it is not a arohana prayogam), so it is allowed. As of my knowledge not all ragas allow this kind of deviation. The aro. and ava. are just guidelines that give the soundscape of the raga. Deviations like the one i have indicated are often used to bring out the actual form of the raga (raga swaroopam).

  And I have question have IR composed any song based on Bhairavi raga.
  MSV has a famous song which has shades of Bhairavi in it ,the song is 'Hello Hello sugama' its MGR movie i think

  From the film Mrudhanga chakravarthi which had some awesome songs including this ragamalika which seems to touch 4 ragas - madhyamavathi, kalyaaNi, ranjani and gowrimanohari. Flawless rendition by VJ.

  What song of the day, Sugamana ragangaley, madhyamavathi all these things. Pl be careful in discussing ragas. Sugamaana... starts with Manirangu which is allied to Madyamavathi.

  btw, ai, sugamaana raagangaLae manirangu-la start aagudhunna MSV-yum manirangu-la song pottirukkaar. Hitherto, i thought only IR did a song in manirangu(Subha Raagame En Sugabhogam Neeyae FROM kanni raasi) after the erstwhile MKT-PUC era.

  in film Rasi(Ajith,Ramba starrer) there is a song "ThenRal thenRal vanthu poovukuL urasiyathE" sung by Unnikrishnan and Chithra(??)...it is based on Manirangu I guess(although not sure)...is the MD KR/YSR?
