Song of the Day: kalyaaNa vaLaiyOsai from urimaik kural.

- A good song from this MGR starrer. MD is MSV, song is sung by TMS and PS. The film was directed by Sridhar. The resonant voice of PS adds to the beauty of this song.
- Was this song written by Vaali or Kannadasan? Another notable song in this movie was "vizhiyE kadhai ezhudhu". The credit for this song was given to Vaali, Kannadasan being the actual lyricist. Sridhar had done this because Kannadasan and MGR were not in good terms then. MGR came to know about this and then insisted that Kannadasan be given the due credits even though they were on the opposite sides politically.

Kalyana Vallaiyosai is much more earlier than Urimaikural. Chandrabose entry in TFM was through Aaru Pushpagal (rajini starer).

This song is written by vaali. At the risk of being away from the mainstream interests here, I again look the song through yAppilakkaNam;
kal|yaa|na valai|yO|sai koN|tu
kaaR|RE|nI mun|naa|di cen|ru
and so forth, with a beautiful
121 211 11
111 111 11
with the lines ending in ukaram. And you would see the way PS beautifully shortens valaiyOcai (211) and stretches munnaadi (111) to bring them within the meter. There are several songs where vaali and MSV join hands to produce such captivating combination.
BTW, those days MGR was using vaali much more than kaNNathaasan. Sridhar had a very great time with MSV - but was very quick to spot an ascending IR and thus came azhake unnai aaraathikkiREn, continued with thendrale ennaith thodu... until a point the egos clashed. Then sridhar unsuccessfully recalled MSV (I do not remember the movie name, it is a Lakshmi starrer), then Anand Shankar (aaha aayira sugam...) - dying a slow death. Sridhar had a very great sense for music.
As always TMS tries his best to kill this song with his excessive brihas and nasal cacophony. But the combination of MSV, PS, Vaali is too mellifluous for this overkill. Of course, there is always MGR to jump and peep inside saree of heroine to add that sensational touch to such songs. (Most of whom were eventually relegated to the status of 'thangacchi' just before the villain tries to rape her).

venkat, good one. reminding you to send me yaappu valai again :)
I think by this time, Sridhar's decline had started. He didn't direct any great movies after this, I think. Meenava nanban, and then the films with IR.

bb- ‘Leave letter’ engey? Stand up on the bench! : )
Now, for my usual ‘Vala vala’ stuff:
Chitryuga’s Urimaikkural- 1974 starred MGR, Latha, SV Sahasranamam, Anjali Devi, Nambiyar & others.
In the period in which directors were distinctly branded as belonging to either MGR or Sivaji camps, Sridhar, in spite of having a separate identity for himself, was considered closer to Sivaji. He had worked as a scriptwriter for Sivaji films like Ethir paaraathathu, Uthama Puthiran, Amaradeepam and Punarjenmam; and had directed Sivaji in Vidivelli, Sivandha Mann, Ooty Varai Uravu and Nenjirukkum Varai.
In the early 70s, some of Sridhar’s films didn’t do too well commercially – (Avalukkendru Or Manam, Alaigal etc). He embarked on a ambitious project with Sivaji, grandly titled Hero-72. Due to various reasons, the filming ran into rough weather, and Sridhar was facing financial ruin. ( It is another story that Hero-72 underwent some modifications and was finally released in 1975 as Vairanenjam )
Sridhar, in a “do or die” situation, approached MGR to help him out (I cannot help thinking that in similar circumstances, Sridhar ‘did’, while GV ‘died’ : ( - perhaps there aren’t people like MGR around any more )
In an interview, Sridhar recalled how magnanimous MGR was, and how he was treated with honour, understanding and respect:
In order not to give Sridhar a bad name that we went begging to MGR, MGR suggested that they have a discreet meeting in Nambiyar’s house. Bur Sridhar, insisting that he had no fear of such a ‘bad name’, went to Ramavaram thottam. Sridhar explained his circumstances, and asked MGR to help him out by acting a film in his direction. MGR replied that he was happy to get a chance to work with Sridhar.
He then assured Sridhar of his fullest cooperation and gave him bulk dates. He went one step further and gave a handwritten note that he was giving priority to complete Sridhar’s film. Sridhar was overwhelmed when MGR explained that this note would help Sridhar to get the necessary finances for the venture.
It was a hit Telugu film- Dasara Pulludu ( stg. Nageswara Rao) that was the inspiration for Urimaikkural, though Sridhar adapated it to suit MGR and the Tamil milieu. However, MGR insisted on copying the attire of Nageswara Rao in the original, including the Andhra style dhothi.
As was his wont, Sridhar wanted Kannadasan to write the lyrics. Considering the fact the MGR and Kannadasan weren’t the thickest of pals (!), Sridhar asked MGR’s permission to do so, MGR readily gave the go ahead ( “Kavignarudan thaan poosal, avar varigaludan alla- dhaaaralamaaga ezhuthattum”). Sridhar got two songs written by Kannadasan and composed and recorded by MSV ( Vizhiye kathai ezhuthu and Aambalaingala neenga aambalaingalaa).
It was then that Kannadasan wrote a particularly virulent piece against MGR in a magazine, and Sridhar got the jitters, and asked MGR about the fate of the songs- MGR replied that he still had no objection to Kannadasan writing the songs. However, if Sridhar felt that MGR fans might not take kindly to Kannadasan’ songs, he was free to change the lyricist, he would not interfere in the matter and it was up to Sridhar to decide.
Sridhar consulted some distributors, who advised him to use the two songs written by Kannadasan for some other film, and get the songs for Urimaikkural written by some other lyricist. Accordingly, Sridhar approached Vaali and got a fresh set of songs written, composed and recorded. (Sridhar approached Vaali only after explaining his predicament to Kannadasan, who agreed to the change).
When MGR got to know this, he called Sridhar and told him to retain Kannadasan’s two songs as well, as those songs were really good.
Urimaikkural went on to become a super hit, and the songs are popular to this day.
The songs are:
Vizhiye kathai ezhuthu- KJY, PS- Kannadasan
Aambalaingalaa neenga aambalaigalaa- LRE- Kannadasan
Oru thaai vayitril vandha udanpirappil- TMS- Vaali
Kalyana valaiyosai kondu- TMS, PS- Vaali
Nethu poothaale roja mottu-TMS-Vaali
Ponna porandhaa aambalaikkitta -TMS- Vaali
Maatikkittaaradi mayilakkaalai- LRE- Vaali
Though Vizhiye kathai ezhuthu was the pick of the lot, Kalyana Valai osai kondu has its own folksy mellow enchantment- Latha carrying MGR’s sathunavu and walking towards the field, where MGR is engaged in a honest day’s labour. Sighting his beloved and hearing her call, he wipes the sweat off his brow, and washes his hands in the pump-set, and wipes them in Latha’s mundhaanai. He has his fill of both the lunch and Latha, and returns, fully refreshed, to yer-ottify!
Though KJY and SPB were increasingly singing for MGR, the 70s too had some memorable TMS-PS duets in MGR films- Kalyana valaiosai ranks along with Azhagiya thamizh magal ival, Nallathu kanney kanavu kanindhadhu, Kanni oruthi madiyil, Lily malarukku kondattam, Nee ennenna sonnalum kavithai, Inbamey undhan peyar pennmaiyo, Kanavugaley aayiram kanavugaley--
