Song of the Day: uLLaththil nalla uLLam from Karnan.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ullat.rm
- A great song, that fit the situation perfectly. Wonderful singing by Seergazhi. Lyrics is by Kannadasan. MD: Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy.
- Lyrics is here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/ullaththil.html
- raagam chakravagam
- One of the best songs sung in pain http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/21944.23496.13:56:29.html
The lyrics amazes me in this song:
senchORRuk kadan theerkka
sEraadha idam sErndhu
vanjaththil veezhndhaayadaa
(then comes the classic line)
vanjagan kaNNanadaa

Naaz,
The "Love is fine darling" song is by LRE & Saibaba I think.
The song from Rajapattu rangadurai where he sings with that tennis bat(!) in the hands is "Ammamma thambi endru nambi"

bb-
Two questions and a half: Who was the song picturised on? And was it NTR that played Kannan?
I remember the situation was Kurukshethram, and I remember a wounded Sivaji at the battle-field. Was the song over a montage, or does somebody sing it (visually)?

on: Thu Sep 12 17:47:08 EDT 2002
The song was picturized on NTR and Sivaji. NTR played Kannan. If I remember right, the song was a background song. I might be wrong.

Naaz- montage=asareeree? dictionary.com doesnt think so... :-)

bb:
It is not an asareeri song. It is sung by kaNNan
(NTR).
- From: Naaz (@ 24.76.127.63)
on: Thu Sep 12 19:31:30 EDT 2002
Haris -
Montage = bits / scenes from Karnan's life (and good deeds) - while main focus is his imminent death at the battle field. (I was not thinking of it as asareeree.)
Sk - Thanks. So Kannan is indeed referring to himself as "vanjagan" (in the third person?) This is why I asked if NTR is shown to be singing the song.
- From: bb (@ 206.154.118.2)
on: Thu Sep 12 20:21:22 EDT 2002
yes, the song is supposed to be sung by kaNNan. it has the lines "oorp pazhik koNdaayadaa karNaa, naanum un pazhik koNdEnadaa karNaa"..
sk, i thought it was sung by NTR but then felt it would be strange for a kadavuL to sing in the thathazhuththak kural of seergazhi :) i think that might be a flaw in the creation of the song. why should kaNNan show this much emotion?

bb -
Thanks. I thought it a bit odd too - with the first / third person switches in Kadavul referring to Himself. Now it's clear (though still a bit too human for a Kadavul, as you point out.)

bb: thaththazhuththak kural of sIrkAzhi? i think you were sleeping when you wrote that :-).
sIrkAzhi is known as a veNkalak kuralOn. kaNIr enpathan arththamE sIrkAzhi thAn. m...
well if you meant an emotional delivery ... well... (an insider's info - i mean kaNNan's groupies' info :-) ) kaNNan gets emotional when with people he cares about :-)) (NOV engE????)
(also ... in the movie, i think kaNNan comes to karNan in the form of an old brahmin to get the pichchai of all his puNNiyams ... that might explain the thaththazhuththa thAththA kural ;) )

Thanks for the song bb,
One small suggestion - you are displaying the 'song of the day' in top of the newtfmpage htmls, Is it possible to give an additional link there which says 'Discuss this song' or something similar to that and point it to this thread ? I feel it will drive more people and discussions here,

You seem to be to be on an unstoppable roll there! The song(s) of the day is turning into a hit parade!
Congrats!
Mudhal Iravu - Sumitra, Sivakumar starrer. One of IRs early ventures which proved beyond a doubt that he was here (or there) to stay! An interesting companion to Manjal Nilavukku might be En Kannmani Un Kadhali from Chittukkuruvi (PS/SPB.)
Indru Orey Sugam - thaan! Thanks.

Song of the Day: Manadhil enna ninaivugaLO from PoonthaLir.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/manadhil.rm
- A great song from a great album. I like this song because of its prelude. PoonthaLir has other great songs like gnaan gnaan paadaNum and vaa ponmayilE.
- Here's a good list on IR+SPB combo. http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/9982.24452.16.08.33.html

bb- GREAT! What a superb song! THANK YOU!
Poonthalir-1979- starred Sivakumar, Sujatha, ARS, Manorama and others. It was a film made to commemorate 1979- which was observed as 'The Year of the Child'. The story is about the small boy wandering in the streets of Madras, while Sivakumar-his father, is searching for him.
(bb-perhaps, it was this film, which you could possibly compare with Baby's Day Out. Madhana maaligai is a different story altogether!)
Other than the songs that you have mentioned, Poonthalir also had 'Raja chinna raja'(PS) and 'Kannimani, ennai kandupidi'(SPS?)
The film was directed by Devaraj-Mohan, who made several films with Sivakumar as hero and IR as MD.All of them had wonderful songs- Annakkili, Uravaadum Nenjam, Kadavul Amaitha Medai, Chittukkuruvi--

Another good one. Hope you have a BIG cap?
Another minor footnote to Saravanan's annotation:
Poonthalir was the remake (more or less,) of the Hindi Aakhri Khat. Sunil Dutt, Meena Kumari, I believe (could be wrong, though.) which in turn could have been Baby's Day Out, as all three were about lost/found mazhazais.
Saravanan - Kanninmani Ennai Kandupidi was by S Janaki.

A great song and has always caught my attention.
I really like the wy SPB sings subduedly in this
song and yes the prelude humming and music are
great. I really cannot say what attracts me to
this song but I like it a lot. The way SPB sings
"karunaiyin kaigalil thaaimai malarum" is just
wonderful.

Saravanan, Naaz, thanks for the info. I guess PoonthaLir is the one based on Baby's Day out then.
BTW, Baby's Day Out got remade as "sundharak kuzhandhai" or some such movie, *ing Nagarjuna/Amala's kid.
