Which combination is better - Ilaiyaraja & S Janaki or R D Burman & Asha Bhonsle

All times in EST +10:30 for IST.

Each music director has his trump card singer. Obviously the two music directors who have ruled India are Ilaiyaraja & R D Burman, even though they were catering to a different set of audiences. Both of them had experimented heavily on their respective favourite singers - S Janaki and Asha respectively. While I always feel that IR-SJ combination is terrific, all my North Indian friends feel that there can never be a combination like RDB-AB. What do you think? I do not want a TFM-HFM war here

  When it comes to comparison of IR-SJ or RDB-AB, comparison between IR vs RDB and SJ vs AB becomes inevitable. Look at other postings in this thread. My point was both the combinations had all the variety, class and hits one would expect commerically and even technically, can you say one is better than the other. We can go in for a rigorous analysis, but that would eventually again end up in comparing IR and RDB, which is just a waste of time according to my opinion. IR and ARR is a different matter, as it has now raised two different groups after the emergence of ARR as the most wanted MD at least in the south, specially since he took over IR's reign. On the other hand, RDB and IR were almost contemporaries in different parts of the country and they were not competing with each other. Anyway, I appreciate your comments

  SJ REQUIRED ONE IR to promote her.From 1970 to 1976 PS,LREand VJ were dominating tfm...IR opted for LRE who was arrogant with him and without giving chance to her he opted for SJ..Asha was famous with Naushad and later with OP.Nayyar..R.D. Started using her when she was already famous.Where as SJ was nobody in TFM when IR started patronising her.So Asha does not owe her success to anybody...BUT SJ is ZERO without IR..
  So bEHIND sj'S SUCCESS always IR is the MAN..
  So do not compare ASHA with someone who was always Godfathered by....some MD.

  This is FACTUALLY wrong. Asha was never very famous with Naushad. It was Shamshad Begam and then Lata.
  
  
  In fact, Asha first became popular ONLY BECAUSE of OP Nayyar.

  hmmm...both are equally good but the comparison is quite unjustified coz both of these combination do not operate on same level-field. i.e TFM and HFM. I enjoy both of them. But I do think SJ is not credited as much as she deserves. And everyone knows the mutual respect shared by RDB and IR, so as fans pls do not malign either of them--maligning one is like maligning other.
  One interesting tidbits though--In 1983 RDB casually remarked that "IR will go out of tunes in 2 years" (implied, if he keeps creating tunes like this) which I think is great tribute to IR.

  At this age, both singers are actively singing even today. Both of them are geniuses.
  
  Comparing apples to apples -
  
  1. Janaki is incomparable in Katril Enthan
  Geetham from Johnny. See how she begins the
  song. The same song is sung by Asha in
  a Hindi movie ( Balu Mahendra, Revathi iirc ).
  Asha is definite no-no..
  
  2. Rangeela - yaayi re yaayi re. Asha was better
  imo.

  S.Janaki is zero without IR, What a statement I think TNS is zero witout the brain. You tamil guys always says the same slogan " behind SJ's success Always IR is the man". You guys never heard her kannada songs under GKV, Vijaya Bhaskar, Rajan-Nagendra,and T.G.Lingappa. Where is IR here? I heard her Malayalam songs also even I don't understand the language . IR always mentioned his interviews SJ is my favourite singer, like MSV always opts PS. Every person has their own choice . Vani's entry is 1973 how can she became the competitor of SJ(he always says vani is busy.. funny). And Asha is my one of fav singer but in expressionwise Asha is no way near to SJ, even I heard SJ's 'ponmeni Uruguday" and Asha's HIndi version' She cannot give such expressions. I am not comparing AB and SJ, but my personal favourite is IR and SJ.

  What is thing you have for Tamil Guys. Chill out a little. But you got most of them right. But when you say expression are you talking abt sexy sounding songs? If not, there are better examples. Like "Senthoora Poovee... Senthoora poovee" or "Poova edhu Oru Malaai..Thooduthu..." from Amman Kovil Kilakaley.

  U are very correct. Both SJ and Asha are great singers - so are LM and PS. Its more of a personal choice, I think. Its like saying "who is a better scientist - C V Raman or Chandrashekhar, Ramanujan or Hargobind Khurana".
  
  But Mr TNS here is too foolish to understand that. He goes about talking filth about anyone who is a competitor for P Susheela. So he uses his nasty tongue to slander S Janaki or Lata Mangeshkar using abusive and idiotic language.He has even gone to the lunatic extreme of saying in some other threads that:
  1)Alka Yagnik (who is actaually a very mediocre singer) is better than Janaki or Lata.
  2)Janaki has killed IRs compositions
  3)Janaki was created by IR (forgetting the innumerable gems she has given in Kannada or Malayalam or Telugu - all with MDs OTHER THAN IR - and that for nearly 2 decades)
  
  
  Its a pity that Janaki got to sing only 200 Tamil songs till IR came, in 20 years.
  
  And TNS doesnt even know his facts. See he talks about the Naushad- Asha combination. Such a combination never existed.

  U are itching to show your idiocy it seems. Asha has sung very few songs for Naushad. Naushad is known for his combo with Lata,Shanshad Begam and Rafi. Shankar Jaikishan used Lata much more often,OK!!
  
  
  About Janaki's shrillness, u are again proving your idiocy and bigotry. She is a melodious singer.
  
  And she was very much number one in Kannada films even 20 years before IR made his advent in TFM. Stop your ramblings and stop inventing myths.

  Shanker Jaikishan had major row with Lata early 60s and promoted Sharada and also used Asha frequently during that time.
  IR started using SJ sparingly after he brought in CHITRA....Only from 1977 to 1985 only IR was promoting SJ exclusively...After that many best songs went to Chitra...
