I saw Virumandi by paying extra.
Why KAMAL..? Why u proved all that told by K.Balachander in Virumandi VIZHA.
It is better to have directors like BHARATHAN ( DEVAR MAHAN ) to deliver a good interesting movie.
Virumandi was very raw and not able to sit in the second half.
Dont confuse the audience with ur confused state of mind.
Iam UPSET and my friends ridicule me as a fan of yours.

I'm interested in seeing the film not so much for the story but for the recreation of a village set.
In Nagesh Kukunoor's Teen Deewarein, set in a jail, there was a documentary filmmaker portrayed by Juhi Chawla. Could Kamal have been "inspired" by this character? It isn't as if Kamal hasn't copied others before in his films. Avvai Shanmughi, Thenali, Panchatantram...

C-P,
Where did you see the movie?
I saw it in Toronto. I am just trying to confirm that the movie playing Toronto is the same as the one playing in India - unlike the CD.

TNS
"Murder after murder and the same hero who kills so many says things against capital punishment"
You're confusing Kamal with Virumandi. Virumandi 'the hero' does not utter so much as a word against capitol punishment in the movie.
Kamal, the writer/director, says even such a horrible man as Virumandi does not 'deserve' capitol punishment.
If you enter the theater without any prejudices and preconceptions, you'll be surprised what you walk out of the movie with.
Another aspect of the movie that I found refreshing was that neither the 'villains' devilish nor the 'heros' godly. They are all human. You can make a case that Virumandi is just as 'bad' as Koththaalan, if not worse. That I found refreshing in a Tamil cinema where battles are always fought between the good and the evil.
C-P,
Do watch the movie again. I enjoyed it more the second time, as I was less intent on following the story and was able to take in the technical nuances.

C-P,
I bought the CD here in Toronto Canada and found a few songs missing that I found on Raaga.com. And I wasn't too happy about it.
I also missed the songs you mentioned on the film. I was wondering if they cut it out in Toronto to shorten the film. If you watched it TN, then I suppose that means that Kamal did the editing. That's good.
The dudes who run the theaters here in Toronto are notorious for arbitarilly cutting out scenes to make the movies shorter. Seems like they did not do it with Virumaandi.
Thanks for the clarification

Virumaandi - What a great movie!
It belongs to a whole new category. Story, Presentation, Acting, Music and more & more!
Raja sets the tone in title music itself!
Same situation told my two characters! What a bold effort!
Kamal is really great!
Saw it twice and will be doing it couple of more times!

mnt,
Ohh...I guess it has all been lost in the editing. The film is already 3 hrs and 15 mins long and if those songs were in, Kamal would have had to release the film in two parts! Part 1 for Koththala Devar's narration and Part 2 for Virumandi's narration!! :-) I actually felt they cud have just showed the title when some scenes were happening. Kamal introduction was delayed as well. But, if it weren't for the title, Ilayaraja's music would have gone unnoticed! :-)
And what did u feel about the narration style? Have u seen Sivahi's "Andhal Naal". That's a 50s film perhaps, thats how Sivaji looked in it! Do u feel there are some similarities in the style of narration?

You are still saying 3 hours and 15 Min. When I watched the movie at woodside (toronto) it was 2 hours and 45 min ( show time Friday 7.30 Pm ). Are you sure it was more than 3 hours.

CP, the thatstamil.com review of viramandi had also specified the "Andha Naal" Connection. So obviously the narration style have been previously used in tfm i guess. I am yet to see either movies so cant really comment. ANy way u'r review was good.

That was a good review.Hope Kamal & IR fans land up at your door step with the same "aruvaL".I heard that Krishnaswami(PT) has arranged a "Gala" party to celebrate-true??
You have not mentioned about Raja and Surya in your review.I am upset.

Here's the first review that says the movie is "Avoidable". Going by the track-records, the reviewer sure looks like a Kamal basher.
He first degrades Anbe Sivam, calling it a "self-indulgent exercise masquerading as a critique of 'globalisation'", and goes on to say that "Virumaandi pretends to make a statement against capital punishment while actually celebrating the machismo of caste violence."
And look at their glowing reviews of some Hindi films like Gangajal, Chupke se, Qayamat and the super dud, "Main Prem Ki whatever hoon" and you know where their taste lies.
