I saw Virumandi by paying extra.
Why KAMAL..? Why u proved all that told by K.Balachander in Virumandi VIZHA.
It is better to have directors like BHARATHAN ( DEVAR MAHAN ) to deliver a good interesting movie.
Virumandi was very raw and not able to sit in the second half.
Dont confuse the audience with ur confused state of mind.
Iam UPSET and my friends ridicule me as a fan of yours.

Ilayaraja's songs are soothing but the re-recording (his strength) seems a bit loud

such a nice screenplay in the first half of the movie, which the tamil audiences have not experienced.....but the second half which is full of violence will surely keep away the ladies audience from the theatre.

Original Poster (virumandi) is deliberately lying.
His IP Address(67.125.27.215) is in San Jose, California. Alert readers will know that Virumandi has not been released yet in the US.

I have finally managed to get the interest to post here about the film. I had no other choice actually, pretty bored! :-) I'll try not to let out the story like the dumb people at galatta.com. That is as bad as things can get because they have just naratted the story exactly like Kamal had! :-)
Virumaandi is a fast paced entertainer for people who can sit up and see some (lots, honestly speaking!) violence. Though I liked the 3 hrs and 15 mins movie which managed to sustain my interest throughout, I do not have the urge to go and watch it again. Not that it is not possible, but I feel the freshness and newness which kept me occupied the first time would be missing when I watch it again. Just as the case is with any other movie, this movie has its positive and negative sides to it.
The films seems to have a message. However it seems that the message is just for the heck of it. It is supposedly an attempt to raise a voice against capital punishment. It is actually mentioned that capital punishment is a 'judicially approved murder'. Though the film begins and ends by stressing this message, things that happen in between are just the experiences of two people. The only relation being that one of them (Virumaandi) has been sentenced to death.
Most parts of the film is a flash back that has been handled in a different manner. Angela Kathamuthu films a documentary on prisoners to get their opinion about capital punishment. Two of the main people who are interviewed are Koththala Devan and Virumaandi. Both of them talk about the same story but each gives a different account. The reason due to which they are here in prison is what is elaborated in most part of the film. The story then shifts back to the present time where it is shown how the things are set right, who wins the battle (Virumaandi,Koththala Devan) and how they do so.
The film is getting good reviews from all fronts as far as I have seen. Especially, the way the story has been told seems to have attracted everybody. I do not deny that it was good, but I just get the feeling that Kamal may have been inspired from "Andha Naal", a Sivaji starrer. "Andha Naal" was similar in a way. The central character - Sivaji dies in the very first scene and the investigator hears the stories from all those related to him to finally solve the case. The main difference being that the stories told in "Andha Naal" are different incidents and experiences which the investigator uses to find the inconsistencies, but here, in "Virumaandi" we have two different versions of a same 'story'. I may be wrong in bringing this comparison, but that was something that struck me immediately. This effort from Kamal is being rightly appreciated and I don't think there can be any second opinions about it.
Kamal has grown immensely as a director in this film. There is not much flaw that one can point out. In my opinion, the director in him seemed to have outperformed the actor Kamal whom we all know. The court scene in which Virumaandi is sentenced to death is a notable one. The manner in which the priest removes the ring given to him by Annalakshmi and hides it while testifying against Kamal is something that impressed me. The major plus point of the film is that it is HIGHLY realistic.
All the actors in the film played their part pretty well. Pasupathy as 'Koththala Devan' and Abirami as 'Annalakshmi' deserve special mention. Highly impressive, to say the least. There is nothing wrong that could be said about the others too. All fitted into their roles perfectly.
There were too many songs in the film I feel. Some could have been done away with. I don't know why, but they had 3 songs immediately after the narration starts and that seemed pretty disturbing to me. The songs - Annalakshmi, Netthiyilae Pottu Vei and Magarasiye did not survive the editing I guess! Or maybe I did not notice them!! I really dont remember hearing them in the film.
The sets were awesome and it is unbelievable that the film had actually been shot in the Campa Cola grounds. Really amazing work. I don't know what this falls under : certain things were portrayed with better effect, like the impact of a fall or bang or whatever u wish to call it.
Ilayaraja had absolutely no scope in this film for BGM. It were the songs that took the place of BGM as there were too many of them! All IR could do was add some bird chirping sounds, bull and cow sounds and certain other sounds that are present in nature! The Title Music was awesome though and it had been effectively used in 3-4 places in the film. I expected more ViruVirumandi chants during the fights. I feel they could have got the audience cheering, but they were missing. The last scene had it though and I am kinda happy!
A major disturbing feature in the film that would perhaps determine its fate at the box office is the high degree of violence. Kamal could have rather named the film as "Aruval" and given a sub-title "The Sickle"! High degree of violence, bloodshed and deaths. The characters actually looked like aliens that had a prop - a sickle or a spear or an axe was attached to their backs in most scenes! Certain scenes are really disturbing and could have rather been edited. Kamal perhaps insisted that they remain as he normally expects to do something Hollywood style. People here (the women and children) may find it disturbing. Infact a friend of mine close his eyes in many scenes!
Another thing that we definitely need to avoid is Graphics! They were pretty horrible. It was sick to see the effects they used for lightning especialy. They were so artificial!
Overall, it is a good film IF you don't mind seeing lots of bllodshed! You need to be a 'raththakaattaeri' perhaps, a bllod sucking vampire!! ;-)

Murder after murder and the same hero who kills so many says things against capital punishment....Then why did he kill somany and gave them capital punoishment with his Aruvaal??
ROHINI DOES NOT REQUIRE THESE MANY SCENES FOR A REPORTER ROLE..
People who saw Pithamagan would see this film and will also see Maniratnam"s AYUDA EZHUTHU....and will say atlast tamil cinema has reached International level...but for me this is another average film taken and presented for Kamalahasan by Kamalahasan.
