hi all, I am Anand from bangalore and a new visitor to the tfm page. I am a great fan of both ARR and IR. I browsed through all the earlier threads on ARR and IR. It seems to me that there are quite a few anti ARRs out here.
Let me tell you something about IRs music. IRs music became popular and sounded different because he tried to bring in a westernization of Carnatic ragas in his songs. Even a dappanguthu was in Lathaangi or sivaranjani. That actually made the difference. Otherwise he is no great MD. One might argue that such a westernization or incorporation of a carnatic raga in a dappanguthu or jazz is something that demands great applause. But IR doesn't deserve that because, if u say u are tuning a song in a particular raagam, you have to bring out the nuances, the laya and bhaava of the raagam in to the song. Just traversing the swaras in the raagam here and there does not mean that u have tuned a song in that raagam. Ilayaraaja has done just that, a mere traversal through the swaras. In many places, there were apaswaras also. ARR has tuned very few songs based on Carnatic ragas but they were classics. For example Mettu podu in Anjali is a beautiful song in Ananda Bhairavi. He has brought out every nuance of the raagam in that song. Minsaara Kanna in padaiyappa is an excellent piece in vasantha. En mel vizhunda mazhai tuliye is again a beautiful piece in kaapi. A real mix of the east and west. That is what u call fusion. Ilayaraaja boasts of having composed songs in rare raagas like chala nattai, kanakangi etc. For example pani vizhum malar vanam in chala nattai is again a pure note traversal. There was no attempt to bring out the nuances in the raaga. So IR knew how to make songs sound good but ARR gives a fine polish to each and every one of his songs. IR composed music for 700 odd films. Hey Ram is his 785th film. Considering 7 songs per movie, he has tuned almost 5500 songs. Huge number indeed but hardly 5% of those songs are listenable others are 100% pure junk. But 99.9% of ARRs songs are listenable and they are also good numbers. What do you say about this?
Regards,
Anand

Anand back to Lucent research group for good. And he really regret to put this posting. Sometimes people wont use their brain cell before
click the button 'post' not thinking the exact consequences.
IR and ARR have the gems of their very own and both are the best
in India. No doubt of that.
Anyway I saw Channel 4 Bollywood profile about ARR. Something
to be proud off actually.
IR when to Hungary and record the BGM for Hey Ram and the conductor of orchestra just can't believe IR tallent ..composing the
BGM for 3 hours movie for just less then 2 days.
You are free to post negative about some Hindi composer who knows
well in microsoft application ( cut and paste ).
Bless you

KRM,
exactly what i wanted to say one can only be pleased with such lovely sounds which are pleasant to our ears ,but our feelings vibrate
when we hear to real music that is what IR has.(same side goal perhaps).

If Ilayaraja is so goooood, then why is he in hybernation and if AR Rahman is so so lousy, then why is he soooooo popular.
If anybody has sense, they will realise that Ilayaraja's downfall was because he has lost whatever little talent he had.
AR Rahman rulz!

Both ARR & IR are extremely talented human beings. To compare one against the other you have to have experienced both their music at the time it was prime. Most of ARR's fans are young people who think & feel that IR's music is too old & ancient for them. IR's fans usually know that deep down inside, "this" the music that vibrates in ur heart. ARR's music is soothing to the ear & exciting, but there are not much feeling in it. ARR's fans who go on & on abt the greatness of ARR & how lousy IR is. They are obviously prejudiced in their view due to their limited knowledge & experience of the music of the MAESTRO.
Open up ur mind & lend ur ears to music.
Long live IR & ARR & their music.

ARR is isai puyal .. just like a tornado he will strike and take notice by
everyone but the tornado ( his music ) will only last for a while ( in the
heart of music lover). ARR do have his good tune too.. no doubt
IR is ragaa thevan.. his music is remain and still remain in all music
lover's heart.
I begin to listen to IR song during the middle of 80's (86 to be precise)
and I went back to his old collection like 16 Vayathele and Kilakkai
Pogum Rayee. This shows his tune is pure rythm .
India's top super star IR no doubt .
Bless you

FYI:
The musician Sharath he refers to is the one who composed the songs for the mallu movie sindhoora rekha. The songs are absolute gems. My favourite is " ende sindhoorarekhayum" sung by KJY + chitra.

HI guys,
did u guys listen to the guitar (I hope it's guitar or is it mandolin? ) prelude before the pallavi of the song "ivvu ivvu okka mudhu" in the telugu movie "Prema" ? the tempo that piece brings in is totally changed once the song starts .. quite innovative I thought .. IR keeps ruling!!! :))

IR is strong in tunes & not in orchestration,
his orchestration is very simple, everyone can do
that, if they listen to 4 or 5 films.
But ARR's orchestration is somewhat unexpectable.
Its a pleasure to listen his sound magic.
In sound awareness, IR is a kid comparing to
ARR.

Let me just quote IR from a DD interview he gave when he was in the peak of his career. When asked what it takes to be a top music director, he baffled the interviewer by saying : "If you know to cheat people, you can become the top music director"!

Not sure if you understand the meaning of the word "orchestration".

!!!! We all should be composing for films now if that is true.

One of the biggest virtues which is taught to us over generations is the concept of modesty. adakkam amararuL uyikkum....way of life. Unfortunately, in today's world where taunting, trash talk, and boasting gets top $$ and tv endorsements, modesty is almost becoming a liability. Add to this, the quirky way modesty is practiced by many Indian artists/sportsmen/scholars etc. - 99% of the time it is false modesty. Irrespective of the intention of the originator, statements of modesty are, in todays world, almost always misrepresented. IR's quote of "Music ngaradhEy EmaaththuvElai" and his simple explanation of his work being, after all, a 'playing around' with the saptha swaras is one of the most misinterpreted quotes. His statement, IMO, represnts purely modesty - maybe genuine, maybe falsejust to get the appreciation of his fans as "evvalavu vishayam therinjaalum, enna adakkam paaththiyaa" types. I don't care either way. When I listen to IR, I am not thinking about his character/personality/virtues - positive or negative. I almost think modesty (as it is overblown) is a curse of our system. Let IR try to be modest in 'oversimplifying' his/anybody's musical talents. Anybody who genuinely believes that DOES NOT KNOW MUSIC & DOES NOT KNOW IR'S MUSIC!!
