Hi all:
Many times we miss to notice certain songs which are too good, just because either the film goes for a flop or some other popular song in the film overshadows this one. Hearing such a song carefully will tell how superbly it is crafted. I will start with a couple of such songs :
1) Kanna Varuvaya (Manadhil Urudhi Vendum). The beginning humming itself is mesmerising. And the interludes are simply superb.
2) Chinna thayaval thandha rasave (Dhalapathi). Soga Rasam pizhiyum paadal. The tune of this song comes often in the BGM. The beginning, the interludes are too great! Its been a very long time I heard this song.
3) Keeravani Iravile Kanavile Paada Vaa Nee (Paadum Paravaigal). A beautiful one by SPB.

I think the instrumental piece in thiruppumunai is "Don't compare" - a violin and percussion number. This is an outstanding number which was later included in How to Name It ? album. This piece was not in the original cassette. I have it on CD (the 7th piece I think).
This is not a forgettable number - absolutely marvellous piece. I suggest you listen to it again.

I recently bought this long lost IR soundtrack, "Anbae Oadivaa" some great tunes here:
1)Idhayam amudham thinamum paruga vaa vaa (KJY, VJ)--IR must have been in a very experimental mood on this one, very unusual sandham that would sound very choppy if not for the chorus rounding it out.
2)Thullum Ilamai Idhu Yaar Thatti Adakkuvathu (SPB)--Typical braggard song about being young. A so so song.
3)Azhagaana Pookkal Malarndhaadumae (SPB)--A brooding, mellow ballad. The song seems to move in slowmotion but is haunting. Hard to find such songs anymore.
4)Kanavoadu Aengum (SJ)--Same tune as the previous song, but the best in the soundtrack. IR uses great accoustic guitars and piano along with tabla and violins. For the musicians in TFM this is a definite conversation piece.
5)Kaathil Kaettathu Oru Paattu (MV,UR)--Standard duet stuff, with violins and bongos prompting pallavi breaks. The kind of choppy, one-line-at-a-time per singer duet that irks me.
6)Joadi Nadhigal (SPB)--A great song. Though the tempo is fast, the mood is one of recovery, a lover optimistic about impending change in his love life. This song is in Ramasamy Gireesan's page under the rare ragams by IR section.
All in all a true find, a keeper for IR fans.

There is one very nice song "Manjal poosum manjal
poosum vanji pOngodi.." from Vijaykanth starrer
Sakkaraith thenvan. It was one of the best from IR in '90's which have gone unnoticed. It was sung by
MV. The movie has some other good songs also, but I don't remember.
One more song by IR that I liked very much which is not so popular is "Radha alaikkirAl, kAthal Geetham isaikkiral" from "Therkathi Kallan".
Is there any body like me who liked these songs?

I remember anbae oodivaa very well. They were good songs. Around that time there were also a few other IR movie songs that I liked which were not big hits. One of it I remember starred prabhu and Radha and had some 'kai' in the name like kai veesu or something like that. Does anybody remember the name of the moview or the songs.

there's this song in Nalla Naal that goes "POdu thanthaanaththOm", a rare IR number that's quite good. terrible lyrics, though. two other such rare IR songs that i recorded recently are "Yaar azhaiththadhu" and "kanava ithu uNmaiya" from Salangaiyil oru sangeetham (mike mohan). wish IR would get back into his old form.

Kairasikkaaran had another lovely number "Then sumantha mullai thaan naan" by SPB and chorus.
"Sir, I love you" had 'Inge iraivan ennum kalaignan' sung by Mano and PS , a GK Venkatesh style tune, very good.

All gavanikka ppadaatha movies/songs
Anbae odivaa is one of my favorite albums. Jodi Nadhigal is a very creative but sounds aritificial melody. So, also is Kairasikkarana and Kanni Raasi, which has Aaaley asaaththum malligey malligey... Have you heard the Thendralaey neeyaa, theendiyathu naana.... (SPB)? I forgot the name of the movie, anyone knows?

It's from Ragangal Maruvathillai, a Prabhu starrer. Two more songs are equally good and went unnoticed.

Aazhkadalil thathaLithu naan edutha muthu ondrai is one of the very best compositions of TRajendar. The same movie had 'Moogilile paattisaikkum' . This man seems to have this awesome ability to squander away his talent. I liked the sitar, humming pieces and ofcourse the tune itself.

Raagangal Maaruvathillai also had "Vizhigal Meenoa Mozhigal Thaenoa" a well written, well orchestrated song that unfortunately had the usually splendid SPB sounding drunk. Maybe the recording or sound engineering was off but SPB sounds so thick and off kilter in this one.
Sriram, Good to hear that TR's talents have musical merit. I have often wondered what musicians thought of TR.

Udhaya, (BTW, whatever gave you the idea that I was a musician ( if that is what you had in mind) , no orthodox training in music whatsoever, not a performer at all), I have always had a healthy respect for his talents (as a lyricist too). Songs like "Deva logam azhaithaalum" (SJ and chorus), "Vasantha kaalangaL" (JC) are very well composed.
I see that you have started a very interesting thread there, a slightly demanding one though. Slightly short on time and therefore I keep lurking in less demanding threads like this one. Will contribute certainly next week.
BTW have you heard the works of Shyam ? I thought his style of presentation was quite unique with flashes of Salil Choudhry. Unfortunately, most of his songs could fit in, in this thread. Some of them
Mazhai tharumo yen megam
Galeer Galeer endru (SJ)
MaanthaLire mayakkam yenna unnai poonthendral theendiyatho (SJ and chorus) ( Superb!)
Ponne boomiyadi
Boombadevi pole vaazhum jeevan neethane
There was one very old SPB-PS song that was jointly composed, in partnership with Philip, "Netru varai viNNil irunthaaLo, indru enthan kaNNil vizhunthaaLo".

Sriram,
Since you discuss ragams like a virtuoso I crammed you with the musicians in the DF. Yes, of course I have heard of and possess a few soundtracks by Shyam. His "Mazhai tharumoa" is a song that I've been searching for the last 20 years. I also liked many of the songs he did for Mouli's movies:
Songs like, "Kaadhal Kanavugalae Neeraadum En Ninaivugalae" and "Pura Rendu Vaanam Sendru". Most remarkable of them being "Vaa Indhap Pakkam"--with "Ival Devadhai" and "Aanandha Thaagam Un Koondhal Pookkal". Another classic song by Shyam is from a forgotten movie, "Kall Vadiyum Pookkal". SPB is superb in this song, "Vaanam Panneeraith Thoovum Kaalam Kaargaalamae".

Udhaya, I have "Mazhaitharumo Yen megam" with me.I could tape it and send it accross if needed. Infact, I just finished dubbing 2 cassettes for RajaG. These cassettes are not pre-recorded. I had made a list of some of my favourite old /rare songs and 'Mazhai...' was one of them. One of my other favourites was 'Neyo nano yaar nilave' from 'mannathi mannan'(PBS singing for MGR under MSV/TKR).Superb song. Another song that I repeatedly keep getting reminded of is 'Kanavil nindra thirumugam' by TMS. Do not know the whereabouts of this song, the movie, lyricist, MD etc. Another forgotten number by TMS 'oruvar manathai oruvar ariya' picturised on Jaishanker doing the role of a postman.
BTW I have not heard the last song you have mentioned.

Who is the MD for 'Pombala Manasu'? It has this beautiful song sung by TL.maharajan.
'Amutha mazhai Pozhiyum Muzhu Nilaviley Oru Azhaku...'.
'Rajathi Ennai Thedi Varuvaarey Raja...' sung by Chitra, MD is MSV. It was released in late 80's. What a song. Has anyone heard of it?
Sriram Lakshman:
I've heard 'BoomaDevi Poley Vazhum Jeevan Neethaney...' from Panja Kalyaani. I think it's a dubbing movie and Kamal is one of the stars.
