Singer Srinivas :
In 1992, in Coimbatore, was when I went to see Maniratnam's Roja because it was a Maniratnam movie. Dreams of playback singing had taken a back seat; I was in Coimbatore and travelling and didn't know how to approach it now. I was just taken aback by the freshness of Roja's music. After a long time, I had bought a tamil film audio cassette. This new person, Rahman, had introduced so many singers; the re-entry of Sujatha, Hariharan (my favorite!), Minmini (God knows who she was at that time!) and Unnimenon. Immediately, I realized that this person has an attitude towards introducing new artists, his music sounds fresh and he was definitely here to stay! On one of my official trips to Chennai, I got hold of Rahman's address and went to see him directly. At that time, he was very accessible (he had just started working on Pudhiya Mugam). He conducted a voice test; I sang a Mehdi Hassan ghazal and he liked it. I mentioned that I lived in Coimbatore and he said that if I moved to Chennai, he might be able to work with me. By the time I came to Chennai in 1994-95, he had shot through the roof!.. The gates had become bigger at Rahman's place (laughs!). It was difficult to even get through to his office. With persistance and a little bit of luck, I was finally able to see him again. As soon as he saw me, he remembered. That's Rahman!.. He's human... and he's got GOD inside him as well! He slowly started giving me singing assignments.
The Different of ARR and Illai: (by srinivas)
How does Rahman usually go about doing a song? Does he tune it first or does he let you sing and improvise as the song progresses?
Rahman's approach is totally different which now many people have started following.(such as Harris Jeyaraj-the clone-said by me,dinesh) For example, Raja Sir has the whole thing in his mind from the very beginning. You don't have a doubt about what you should sing and you better not! (laughs). Two totally different schools of music. With Rahman, when you go in, nothing is ready. He just feeds in some basic chords. When you listen to them on your headphones, you are transported to some other world. Within two minutes, he creates a masterpiece of a loop. Those chords are just magic. You feel like singing so much! He incredibly motivates you when singing, which is also the reason why artists (singers and instrumentalists alike) give him the very best.

OISG,
I too initially thought Rajageetham was better, some of the singers were quite good. But then, Abdul Hameed's idea of democracy actually leads to anarchy, since a catchy song is all it takes for a singer to win. Recently OH PODU scored over a PS number!
If AVR conducts a weird memory test of the participants ability to remember their judges and their native places from Round One, Abdul Hameed's template is : "Medaiyil paadiya anubhavam unda? illai? idho kalam amaithu tharuvadhu ungal abhimaana Raj TV!" and trite like that.
Comparitively Sapthaswarangal has 2-3 rounds which is a better all-round test. Of course, judges are mediocre.
Vijay's Aburva Ragangal seems to be the best one - very good judges and multiple rounds to test the participants' skill. Hope it provides the right platform for talent to be noticed.
Hope you see my post, since a 'masaa masaa' match is going on in this thread!

IR is greedy.
Correctly said!
Also selfish, to the point of ridiculousness.
He never shared his glory with anyone and took everything for himself. Forget about the rest, what about his own blood brother Gangai Amaran?
IR's success in the 80s was mainly due to Gangai and when Gangai split, IR became a nobody. Such was Gangai's contribution - which was never acknowledged by the greedy IR.
Somebody was talking about singers introduced by ARR. At least he has Hariharan, UnniKrishnan, Shankar Mahadevan, etc etc to his credit.
Who has IR introduced?
Useless and forgettable singers like Jency Sailaja, Mano and Arunmozhi.
So, what is IR's achivement?
A big fat zero!

OISG,
A small correction...Karthik was introduced to TV viewers through "pattukku paattu" program wherein he sung "mettu podu mettu podu" (sang the full sang, as he got the best voice award or whatever)..when he came to sapthswarangal, he was sounded just amazingly confident & stunned everyone with his singing...he did not come to sapthswarangal as a raw talent...no one does..only people who have some training get into the program, and very rarely u find some ill-trained ones spoiling the shows..thats very rare [i think i can vouch for that, after years of regular watching of the program]
That takes away nothing from 'raajageedham' in raj tv. Thats a different platform that looks at raw untrained talent, that can stun the audience..
Now coming to the topic, here are some recent comments by singers on IR...
Sadhana Sargam - Its purely a learning experience to work with this legendary composer. Talking with him, you can learn so much. While i work with him, i just have to merely follow his instructions, and everything else is taken care of. [BUT GOD ALMIGHTY, MA'M WHAT HAPPENS TO UR PRONUNCIATIONS. KINDLY PICK SOMETHING OF THAT TOO WHEN TALKING WITH IR NEXT TIME ;-)]
Karthik - Working with him is like experiencing a different plane of thought process in music making. His style is a very unique & belongs to a very original school of thought. I consider myself very lucky to have worked with him.He is damn sure about what he wants from a singer, and you better stick to it.
A.V.Ramanan - He has the potential to compose songs that convey even the subtlest of subtle feelings . "Chinna thaayaval" from Thalabadhi is one such song. [NEVER MIND MY PERSONAL GRUDGES FOR ME NOT BEING PICKED UP ;-))]

I dunno about Unnikrishnan and I am not sure about Shankar Mahadevan, but I know for fact that ARR isnt the one who introduced Hariharan. Hariharan's mentor is the great Jaidev, veteran Hindi film composer.
