i was listening to 'mella mella ennai thottu' from vaazhkai and that inspired me to start this topic. more often than not the tempo of a song is determined by the start the song is given. in the above song raja brilliantly combines a violin with percussion to set the rhythm .
iam looking for songs that have a brilliant starting piece which sets the flow for the song.
examples can include raakamma, shubalekha(telugu), etc. the songs need not be fast paced. for example 'poove sempoove' has a melodious but a good start, IMO. looking forward to u'r contributions.

The *worst* start is "Wish you a happy new year" in Sagala Kala Vallavan. Madras DD used to show it as a rule for every New Year. What a damper!

Shankar Ramakrishnan:
IMHO, the honor of having the worst start belongs to "Yen Vaanile" - courtesy, Jency's "No, No, No, No, No ! Just listennnn" :-)))) Well, I know apart from that the song has a rather pleasant beginning and the rest of it is simply incredible! But I just could resist that dig at Jency's accent :-)))

Srinath,
If you observe closely, she says, "JUZD LIZZENNNNN". It's very funny. Nevertheless, that alone doesn't qualify the song to belong to this category of WORST STARTS, in my opinion.

Aruna Kirana from Guru (one of the longest, and very effective preludes that IR has composed)
Malargale (Love Birds); the mood and flow of the song is very well highlighted by ARR in this prelude.
Oh Butterfly (Meera): An interesting beginning. However, the lyricist could have easily avoided the term Butterfly; it sounds awful in this beautiful composition, especially, Asha's accent.
Kaadal Kavidaigal (Gopura Vaasalile)
Poo Maalaye (Pagal Nilavu)
Ilamai Ennum Poongaatru (Pagalil Oru Iravu)
Naru Mugaye (Iruvar)
Minminikku from Sigappu Rojakkal has a very nice start too.

my favorite great starts:
-adadaa idhuthaan sugamoa (twinkling synth sounds with halting tabla beats)
-thanni karuththeerukku (pounding melam beats with quirky strings)
-puththam puthu kaalai (atmospheric synth accompanied by a heavenly chorus)
-vasandha kaala nadhigalilae (harmonica with flute and violins)
-kodai kaala kaatrae (a muffled flute sound, probably from a synth)
-aasaiyak kaaththula thoodhu vittu (amazing beats with the chorus sounding like some exotic tribe's mating call)
-malargal nanaindhana paniyaalae (the austerity of the quiet morning conveyed with just flute and violins)
-bhaarathi kannamma (the happiest violin intro I've ever heard in TFM coupled with great humming by spb and psuseela)
-aaththu maettula oru paattu (enchanting flute and table intro)
-niththam niththam en nenjoadu (great aalabanai by msv to launch this mesmeric tune)

I think that one song that had an excellent beginning was "Thanga Magan inru Singa Nadai Podu arukil arukil vanthaan" sung by Chitra and Yesudas in Baadsha. When I heard the beginning I was totally impressed. But like "Rakamma Kaiya Thatu" this song also changes when they start to sing. It was so rich when they started off, with a lot of rich sounds and then in the middle it becomes like any other normal love song. But I have to say that the Charanam is great. Congrats to the singers as Srikanth once said.

I believe "Thanga Magan Indru" begins with some western classical composition - typical "Devaa" touch. So, the credit goes to Beethoven/Mozart/Bach, or whoever it is.

some songs which have BRILLIANT starts are:
poondhalir aada (schoolboy infatuation aptly reflected in a guitar(?) opening, followed by a beautiful bango crowned by amazing chorus)
om namaha (terminally ill lovers kissing passionately, haunting drum opening, sounding like a heartbeat, and mano takes off with
his humming)
chinna kannan azhaikkiraan (pastoral flute, santoor wizardry, followed by flute-tabla)
radha radha nee enge (pure romantic, overlapping male and female voices, leading to a grand violin piece, and then tabla and flute, and then violin again)
thoongaatha vizhigal rendu (racy synth., chorus humming and enter SJ, what else can u ask for)
vaa vaa anbe anbe (awesome guitar start, and the keyboards take over only to be overwhelmed by flute, and then violin)
digression: agni natchathiram was a landmark for IR in that he did not use any indian instrument.
back to BRILLIANT starts
one of the greatest songs which had one of the greatest starts i have ever heard: en uyir thozhi keloru sethi, from karnan. one of the few songs that qualify for any adjective. the sitar opening
is so evocative of the splendour of regal romances. of course, the lyrics are the jewel in the crown, and need i mention P.Suseela's celestial singing, esp. when she sings that aalaabanai (is that the right term?) after "aranmanai arivaan, ariyanai arivaan", a clever punctuation before continuing "anthappuram
onru iruppadhai ariyaan". this song kills me every time i hear it, IMHO, the song of the century.

Chandirane sooriyane from 1992.jesudas sings it.
I even got the poster.name?
saarasam from Krishna Leela..1948? p.u.Chinapa.
Both these songs, I switch off the lights and
erm...pretend. I'm sure you all do.
